That is a reasonable and well thought out response. I sometimes ask people: Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you were armed so you could kill the other person. I have not. Sure, I’ve lived in a small rural communities my whole life so I feel safe. The culture of fear is part of this.

The Second Amendment states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." See that part about "well regulated?" That gives the government the right to regulate firearms, and it baffles me that it has essentially been ignored.

That is, at best, a nit-picking argument. What constitutes the "militia?" According to Miriam-Webster - 1a : a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency - The militia was called to quell the riot.

b: a body of citizens organized for military service

2 : the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military service

3 : a private group of armed individuals that operates as a paramilitary force and is typically motivated by a political or religious ideology

specifically : such a group that aims to defend individual rights against government authority that is perceived as oppressive

I don't see anything in there that guarantees an individual's right to own any weapon they wish.

Want less gun violence, including school shootings? Register all firearms and license all owners. Just like vehicles, make sure owners can prove they can own and use safely.

You could never kill that many people with a knife in that short of a time as efficiently. They are meant for war not babies.

" a crime to show the crime-scene photos"...Imagine, in this age of the movie "Till" regarding the lynching of a teenage boy who's mother had the foresight and guts to have the world see the reality of his murder. Very powerful. How many photos of slain children do you think it would take to make theses members of congress to act? 2nd amendment distortion is at the root it all. I recently quoted the amendment to a fellow who said "That's not what it says!" .. It does not say for self defense, nor to keep the government in check, or for hunting. It says "the security of a free state" . It doesn't even say to own, but to "keep" which could as easily be seen to mean to take home the militia provided weapon. There are now more guns than there are people in the USA . Our current bout with the tribalism of the right wing nuts that are the life blood of the Republican party are responsible for this carnage. Gun fetish is a sorry state for a political party and , leaves us with much to do, but not much to look forward to.

I remember at the time writing that the law was just protecting gun companies and allowing them to sell more guns. But can you imagine what Alex Jones would have done with crime scene photos while spreading false conspiracy theories. Something else to think about.

Thanks Ken and Ido, but if just once the public saw the child blown apart perhaps the will to do something would be overwhelming. Don't get me wrong, not eager to see theses images, but I wonder if they were available. The Alex Jones of the world will do what they will, but the NRA and the gun nuts hide behind the ignorance and visual evidence of what theses weapons do. Thanks Ken, there is no easy answer.

That is certainly my first impulse. Make it public.

It isn't the best we can do. It's the most we "chose" to do. Anyone that doesn't support making these guns illegal, has blood on their hands every time there is a mass shooting. That is a lot of blood. Our freedoms will kill us.

No reason for military-style weapons to be in the hands of anyone.

We need to get rid of these high powered guns, we need Gun reform and many more mental health counselors in our high schools.

You are so right. There is no reason for military style guns to be out there. We also need Gun reform and many more mental health counselors in our high schools.

What about the part about the "well-regulated militia?". Also seems pretty clear. Would you ague that it indicates there be no regulation or limitation of firearms whatsoever?
