Your description of staff writers at The Atlantic as "nerdy journalists" is spot on. Though, at times, some of them put out quirky, funny and touching articles. For example, Tom Nichols has had a full range. From writing about defense and Russia, to the loss of his beloved cat, Carla, to a discussion about music. I find it well worth the subscription price.

I also hope that the voting results in Louisiana have some meaning. Yesterday, about a dozen Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives and bucked Republican leadership demands to vote down allowing proxy voting for new parents. Of course, Stefanik was not one of those Republicans. After the vote did not go his way, Speaker Johnson had a hissy fit and canceled bringing other pieces of legislation to the floor that were scheduled for a vote this week.

It was good to see that for all of Musk spending millions in Wisconsin that it did not go the way he and Trump wanted it to. Hopefully the elections in November 2026 will reflect that also.

I am new to Substack and am learning how to use it I didn't see your message until I opened my email and I was shocked by it. If you don't feel my situation is valuable just tell me I thought that journalism is also about investigation not going along with the Empire's New Clothes.

Gail, I've had several complaints about your comments on Mr. Low. What ever beef you have with Mr. Low I urge you take it somewhere else. It is inappropriate on this site. Any further comments such as this and they will be removed from the site and you will be banned from participating. Ken Tingley

Whatever you think about Bob Woodward’s withholding of COVID transmissibility information until his book was published rather than handling it as an in-the-moment journalistic newspaper scoop that might have saved lives, it’s poetic at best that he has praise for Jeff Goldberg’s handling of important national security information the public should know.

His dubious authority on those ethics would expect him to be more humble than to offer any opinion or praise.

A well written article about that incident and the associated ethics questions is available here from Vox:

It is not only in NOLA ; concerned citizens all over the country are worried about the fate of our nation. The “Destroyer in Chief “ has the ability to decimate the federal government and that is exactly what he is doing.

Speaking of Louisiana and applause, the distinguished former Senator, J. Bennett Johnston, died last week.

A neighbor of mine in the D.C. suburbs went to the funeral and when the forgotten, sometimes maligned Joe Biden was introduced, he got a thunderous ovation.

Why forgotten? He did an extremely noble thing that Democrats should learn from. Quitting when you don't fit into the party. Schumer?

Now I'm jealous; New Orleans, books, authors, essayists and, undoubtedly, warm weather. I was gifted with The Atlantic by the current Town Supervisor, Jim Nolan, when he took office. He had skillfully managed to defeat the MAGA who had defeated me. It's one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. I have always loved editorial writing. I got that from my dad, a Rockefeller Republican, who read every night in his recliner before falling asleep after the never ending work on our 100 cow, 300 acre farm in Washington County. He had bought the land for $10,000 in 1940. Shortly before his death, he said he regretted not going to war. But he had a farm to run, and farmers got a pass. He was a Tom Friedman fan and read most of his books. Eric Severide was his favorite TV commentator. In his late 80's and 90's he bought a computer and became adept at reading the news there. In the last two years of his life, he lived in the assisted living section of Pleasant Valley in Argyle. He shared a mealtime table with another Greenwich resident who was a rabid conservative. I won't mention any names. They would get into arguments at the table. After the meal my dad would go to his computer, search and find a source that factually verified his point of view, print the article off and give it to his nemesis. I'm not sure why I'm writing all this. I guess I simply got triggered by books and the likes of Jeffrey Goldberg and Bob Woodward. Thank you Ken Tingley for The Front Page.

I am so happy you are providing such a welcoming community. I am sure that you will be able to help me even with your busy schedule. One of the people in your community is using several fake profiles to harass me and is drawing cartoons of me and insisting that I am fat. Can you please ask Edward Low what he thinks my height and weight are?

Like your dad, I am a big fan of Tom Friedman and when arguing with gQpeds online, I like to have the sources to back up what my point is.

I can never figure out why.. when the gQpeds don't have the facts and the person they are given a source... why... they think name calling means they win?

The joyfulness embodied within Susan Crawford’s acceptance speech, after winning Wisconsin’s Supreme Court position, was palpable all the way to Queensbury late last night!

She stated “I never imagined as a little girl taking on the richest man in the world…” adding “Justice does not have a price…our courts are not for sale!”

Cheddar Cheese Wedge - Headed Musk pranced and danced onstage waving million dollar checks to 2 potential voters just 2 days before, reportedly sinking over 20 million $$ into that anti-Dem campaign…and tRump made several Wisconsin center stage appearances, convinced they could “buy” the most votes.

Along with Corey Booker’s passionate marathon oration and determination to keep the focus on the clear and present danger to essential needs and rights of ordinary Americans of all ages, it was a good day for feeling Hope…that people of all persuasions are trying to make a difference…one day at a time…to weave together the shreds of our democracy.

Wow! What an experience Ken! And definitely it was much more than a book signing. Reading about the speakers and the number of like minded people concerned about what’s happening in Washingtonand true concern for the state of our country gave me hope for the first time in months. Thanks for sharing..

WOW! I’m envious! (Isn’t envy one of the deadly ones? I plead guilty as charged). Woodward, Isaacson, and Applebaum and Goldberg! I would have done “anything but cross the Atlantic” to have been there (pun and elogeration intended).

Graham’s comment to Woodward needs to be heard and heeded more today. Less “pomposity” and more humility. Repeating myself, humility being creating space in our lives where others can enter in. Where there is no humility there is no empathy.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court and Louisiana proposition results are encouraging, but the Florida results, another matter. To be expected. Was it Goldwater who wanted to take New England out to sea? (Could be wrong). What would it take to lop off the Florida peninsula?

first, I love your descriptions and your enthusiasm, Ken--of the basketball players and now of the line up to hear Goldberg (who, you don't mention, has needed security around family and home, the continual violent threats against any dissenters from Trump's desire for total affirmation and loyalty). Not just people afraid (although that is true) but people who want to affirm and support and fight for what is good (and i think of what i hope will be thousands gathering this Saturday for "Hands OFF" demonstrations around our country). You capture the spirit, your spirit. And, just as an aside, i think the atlantic articles--and the New Yorker--and Rex Smith and Ken Tingley....all allow us to see and affirm what is good and fight against all that do great harm. Thank you

And the question: How did Landry win as governor? He is, I think, the one who wanted to prosecute and persecute the doctor in NY who sent a prescription for abortion through the mail. I think of his cruelty and corruption and of Paxton, attorney general in Texas --someone who was almost impeached by Republicans because he was so corrupt--attacking a caring welcoming place for refugees in El Paso, run by an incredible man who literally saves people almost dying in the desert, and tries to close the place down, accusing them of smuggling refugees fleeing violence. Why do people elect people cruel and corrupt........and how good when they are defeated by the people. The Wisconsin vote for the Supreme Court made me feel that perhaps greed and power and cruelty can be defeated by awareness and caring.
