Looking forward to the reading at the Wood in July, it was an add on when we bought our annual subscription to the ATF. Best entertainment in town! Supporting local arts provide us with much needed joy and a sense of community. We should try to be participating citizens, whether it's attending a peaceful march, a phone call to our representatives, sending a postcard, or dollars sent to worthy causes. Of course, those of us who read The Front Page already know this. Our job is to promote good ideas to those who don't.

I am also looking forward to it, although having an audience hear your words directly is a bit terrifying.

Though I never saw the movie “Miracle,” your narration of your own newsroom scene… and the passion and patriotism within that one game…and the awards ceremony…gave me goosebumps, then tears. The phrase “there is no Me in team” came to mind, and how one coach (who does not make himself the center of attention) can make such a profound impact on so many lives. And the entire country.

This story also brought flashbacks of newsroom scenes from “All the Presidents’ Men” when Woodward and Bernstein’s deep dive investigative work eventually nailed Nixon and his band of bandits… and brought justice in the midst of all that corrosive corruption…which was created by a man who saw himself as King.

Sadly, 50 years later, even with all the clear evidence of corruption within the first and now second tenure of a tsar-like President, justice has been M.I.A. within our Justice Dept. as well as the Supreme Court. As you, and Catherine, and countless others contributing to the Front Page have written…it’s up to us to do what we can, when we can, for as long as we can to try to neutralize tyranny. The marches and rally cries in the early ‘70’s of “POWER to the PEOPLE!”eventually made a difference in ending the VN War…I have to believe we can end our own current civil war…eventually.

I too believe in Miracles.

The Miracle on Ice can never be repeated as the Pros have taken over Olympic team sports. I remember the day and the game. I was watching my 13 year old son compete in a Youth hockey game in Ridgefield CT. They stopped the game to announce the US win. The crowd went wild. The movie sits up there with another classic - Hoosiers. Both films present an enduring story of old time American values. Not sure we’ll ever see those again.

Probably, never to be repeated but maybe someday some 16th seed in the NCAA Basektball Tournament will run the table. Do you believe in miracles?

Great article of a great time for our country!! I was crying as I read your article Ken- but sadly it was a mixture of tears of joy remember such a high proud moment for our country! We were so together all proud to call ourselves fellow Americans! And unfortunately I cried because of the state that we are in now- the resentment , hatred the despair the frustration because the current administration is twisting changing and not being honest - not really benefit to ALL Americans- My hope is that leaders in Congress from both parties will step up to control and stop administration who seems to b behaving as dictator.

We need a positive uplifting plan-goal to feel united again.

Even a crowd chanting "USA, USA, USA" means something different these days.

I’ll never forget when this happened. I was with my girlfriend at the time near Oakland, California. The message for today is a clear one of both warning and hope…. Warning that we are at risk of losing the community that democracy allows, and hope that we will get through this and reestablish decency, acceptance and inclusiveness in all areas of society.

I was fortunate to watch the game live on ABC in Atlanta, GA. I was ill with a virus that Friday night but mustered the stamina to watch - I am not a hockey fan. I recall one of the Russian players afterwards acknowledging the "kids" accomplishment. Thanks for sharing that memory and what the nation must do now. Work as a team to defeat the MAGAs.

So your basketball team will be coming to Binghamton - twenty minutes away from me.

Sorry to say - not a sports fan, but I hope they do well. The sports teams in your area are really well supported - which is nice in this day and age.

Yes. It was wonderful! To win that gold!

However, my thoughts go back to the 1980 summer Olympics and how our athletes who had been training all their lives were denied the opportunity to represent the USA. Wrestler Gene Mills sat at our dinner table and how sad it was to hear his story about not being able to participate because (and there is only one explanation) - our athletes were the pawns for Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan.

Athletics has nothing to do with politics. And my husband Jack knew many of the members of the USA wrestling team. It was heart breaking for hundreds of our elite Olympic team athletes to miss this one chance of a lifetime!

Russia didn’t mind that we weren’t there! And then in 1984 when Russia didn’t participate, the USA cleaned up. Jack, our children, and I were there when wrestler Jeff Blatnik and gymnast Marylou Retton won the gold! Just a thought that had been on my mind since last evening. And reading your column initiated this response. Thanks, Ken.
