Do you believe that the Congresswoman tries to appeal to "right-wing extremists?" Do you believe she may do so intentionally? I know I believe that she does....

The difference here is that Stefanik has called people imprisoned for their crimes on Jan. 6 “hostages.” That is a bridge too far.

Unfortunately, Trump is NOT in jail. His hapless misdirected supporters aren’t so lucky.

It’s not just them doing the waiting. Overburdened courts have been a problem for many years, and many people, some innocent, languish in jail for lack of bail, waiting for their day in court. That was the whole impetus behind the bail reform law in NYS. And please remember that they weren’t all arrested 3 years ago, and some of them may be filing pre-trial motions that also cause a delay in the start of their trials.

I guess you mean Trump. Lots of defendants in front of him.

Can we say that the recent resignations of a large number of reasonable public servants from the Galway town government is entirely related to right wing extremism and lack of civility?

Expand full comment

There does not seem to be a lot of information on the reasons why, only that things had become uncivil between members of the board.

Of course. This is politics, after all. I also believe that the Congresswoman does, in fact, try to appeal to the Radical Right, as did her hero, the previous President.

I think she believes they are significant part of Trump’s base.

I don't see where ANYONE claimed that. You are twisting words. No one claimed that all Trump voters are"right -wing extremists.". Do you deny that some Trump voters are, in fact, right-wing extremists?

I don't deny that at all. However, I DO believe that those groups make up the minority of Biden/Harris voters.

I would agree with that 100 percent. It is a small group of people, but the fact that they are unafraid to be public about these beliefs is disturbing and something new.

Trump has essentially given permission to ill behaved people to continue their obnoxious behavior. He is the epitome of the uncivilized who thinks he can behave in any way he see fit. It really disturbs me that so many subscribe to his horrendous behavior.

Ken I don’t mean to burst your bubble, nope that’s not true. What you believe to be new just ain’t so . American Nazis - The German American Bund https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDy05QotN_g&t=50s see any link to current events.

You are correct. The communist party was a fairly active party in the 1920 or so, so politics is always evolving.

The death of Kaylin Gillis is unbearably sad; killed because there are too many guns and too much conspiracy-inspired paranoia. Nonetheless, strong legal protection for defendants is generally a good thing. Mr. Monahan is entitled to it as much as is Donald Trump, despite the egregiousness of their alleged crimes. One is a frightened old man with no judgment and the other is a sociopath. Fortunately for both, they are white. I wonder if a murder suspect of color would have been apprehended so benignly.

Something to think about!

trying to figure out which is the frightened old man and which is the sociopath.

I was thinking the same thing.

In the vein of considering the suspect’s skin color, what would have been the outrage with a victim (yes, victim) of color. I like to think it would not have made any difference.

Wendy, I thought about it for a while. There is a sadness here beyond my ability to comprehend, a feeling I wish not to feel. So, before my sadness turns to anger, I am going outside to play in the snow and let my mind drift to other things. Something many others my wish for, although will be unable to do, to think about other things.

Such a senseless loss. As a parent I could never comprehend my child being shot as they drive away. There was a day when our children sold candy bars and magazines door to door for fundraisers in school or girl/boy scouts. I was a census taker once years ago. Never could I have imagined a world like this until now.

I think about my Mom and her friend (women in their late 50's) going door to door for the City Directory back in the late 70's early '80's. They sometimes ran into rude and unfriendly people, but that was not the norm. No one would do that job today.

I think there's an interesting relationship between the post on "Victims are everywhere at Monahan trial," and the post linking to the article on right wing extremism in the North Country.

Paranoia and false claims of victimhood abound.

Her death was caused by a paranoid man. Mrs. Monahan sounds troubled..

I did speak about the events downtown to Hirsch....but they didn't use it. I talked about going to city hall to get protest laws changed, and APEX etc. Bullhorns, flags, Stefanik.

Unfortunately, or fortunately for the sane people, the groups here have fizzled out. In-group fighting broke some of them up and the splinter groups didn't survive.

Several members of APEX went to the capitol that day....but I don't have proof they entered, only attended.

I don't know if groups like the Oath Keepers were ever involved locally but can tell you the nitwits up here definitely praise them.

There are people in Saratoga Springs connected to the Proud Boy movement.

Chaz Tulin is one. He also belongs to a hate group called Moving Saratoga Forward. That's run by Rob Arrigo - it's a hate page. All the best bigots and haters can be found there. I turned screenshots over to SPLC.

I'm sure if traitor trump gets the nomination the flags will be flying again big time.

As far as the Iowa primary goes, I do agree it is a tempest in a teapot. Trump being the frontrunner sounds less important when you consider these few facts I gathered with a few moments research and a calculator:

The population of Iowa in the 2020 census was 3,190,000. (I rounded off all the numbers to the nearest thousand to make the math easier.)

There are 752,000 registered Republicans in Iowa (24% of the population).

Of those, 108,000 (14% of the Republicans) voted in the primary.

Of those, 56,000 (52%) voted for Trump.

That means 1.8% of the population of Iowa voted for Trump in the primary. Hardly a mandate. Plus, 86% of the Republicans in Iowa had better things to do that night, even though Trump basically told them to get up off their deathbeds to come vote for him.

Interesting to me was the fact that three fourths of the population of Iowa, supposedly such a Republican state, are not, in fact, Republicans.

It gives me cause for hope!

I edited this today(1/18/24) to fix my math error. It was not .018%, but 1.8%. Still, quite a small amount, considering!

It seems to me that the Monahans lied about anyone coming up the driveway that night.
