Man's inhumanity to man. I think some of that type of ignorance still exists today. Disgusting!

Ken wrote: “The Times now has 10.8 million subscribers with some 10.2 million of them digital only. Digital journalism can be successful and that benefits us all.”

And even more important than the increase in subscribers is that the business side of the NYT is profitable:

"Adjusted operating profit for the three months was $76.1 million, an increase of 40.9 percent from a year earlier, propelled both by the increase in subscribers and by higher average revenue per user." (NYT)

I think Rex Smith of the Albany TU used to say something like "No margin, no mission."

Thanks for the added revenue stats.

Our Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s rhetoric sounds more like propaganda to me.

Remember the days when opponents use to debate the pros and cons of the issues. Now they just attack and lie all the time.

I usually go with gaslighting. Hope she enjoys the minority in 5 months.

Stefanik using the grammatically incorrect GOP term "Democrat" instead of the correct adjective "Democratic" is what I find, well, weird, because she is a Harvard grad and knows better.

But that could be the basis for almost every statement she makes these days. It's a dumbing-down of intent, to feed the insatiable GOP base, hungry for insult and their diet of yellow journalism.

Considering some of the people who have come out of Harvard these days, I don't think it is the education it used to be.

Listen to Harris and Walz speak. Even if you don’t agree with their views on policy, they certainly don’t sound like deranged lunatics bent on the destruction of America. I hope they use all of that fundraising money to blanket the airwaves nationwide with their utter normalcy. Maybe it will start to counteract “rhetoric” like Stefanik’s as people realize they’re being sold a bill of goods by the MAGA movement.

With no help from the media that all showed breaking news yesterday of the crazy man spewing for over an hour and then not covering Kamala’s speech. These poor people have quite the uphill battle.

Lawrence O'Donnell, of MSNBC, gave a scathing report last night of the tremendous lack of fact checking by the news stations on Trump's tirade of lies. Lawrence even called out his own MSNBC. Does the press really think that there are that many viewers with pointed heads? What an insult to those of us with functioning brains, who can discern how despicable and destructive Trump is.

Thanks for your succinct update on a terrible issue - the exploitation of Native Americans. The succinct goal at Carlisle, the most prominent of the “schools”, and the other sites was “kill the Indian and save the man” - in other words, take almost action to Americanize the Indians. A great, quite recent book on the topic is by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss: “Path Lit By Lightning”,The Life of Jim Thorpe. In an admittedly long, nearly 600 pages, Maraniss outlines the highs and more - to use your phrase - heartbreaking lows of Thorpe’s career and his exploitation by Pop Warner, who even shaped the movie to his advantage and Thorpe’s detriment. Incidentally, the masterful book is a bit of a three-fer: it is a meticulously researched look at Thorpe’s life, and,in the process, it gives a broader overview of the horrible national treatment of American Indians, and third, it discusses at some length the origins of the National Football League. Thorpe was the first (figurehead) leader of the league. -Dave Nathan, Bethesda, MD

I taught Social Studies from 1980-2002. At that time the textbook, that we were REQUIRED to buy, included side by side photos of a young Native American boy. One showed him as he arrived with long hair and native attire, the other with his hair cut and wearing the typical clothing of those who ran the school. Unless a teacher expanded on the subject, it was usually ignored.

Thanks David. There has been at least one great independent film on the subject - Bones of Crows that was set to be shown at ATF film festival last year - as well as a mini-series in Canada. Both are well worth the look.

Trump rallies are about anger and name calling. Harris rallies are about hope and optimism with a heavy dose of smiles. I'm exhausted by Trump and the choas he sows. I need optimism and smiles in my golden years.

I sure wish the journalists in attendance had done a better job at yesterday’s staged media/reality TV event. Where were the tough questions? It was more like they were PR props than effective members of the 4th estate.

Expand full comment

Whats new about that? Speaking of dumbing down - think of trumps interviews and press conferences! Far too many of these supposed "journalists" have done a lousy job for years.

PR props indeed! I would assume it will take some time for them to remember HOW to actually interview anyone.

These posts on the Front Page are what actual reporting is and does.

I've stopped watching the "media" in most cases - so disappointing.

When Trump was talking about giving regular press conferences and total access, I was waiting - desperately - for someone to ask about not having a press briefing for six months at one point - or was it nine months? The trouble is that he says so many outrageous and untrue things, it is hard to keep them all straight. The media is drowning in untruths.

I havent watched his latest "press conference" - but just watched Lawrence O'Donnell's show from I believe last night - very worthwhile! He gave a couple examples of our current "press" with Pres. Biden & his press secretary. The arrogance and rudeness and lack of respect shown? But not towards dumpster.

He ripped the "questions" asked of trump - then said that NONE of the networks or cable included MSNBC - showed Harris/Walz speeches at the UAW. Here it is per YAHOO!!!

The follow-up questions are always the keys. Like, what specific laws did Hillary Clinton break that made you want to give her a break and not arrest her?

When has he been asked a serious follow up question? Other than at NABJ recently?

And when has he been pushed to give a real answer or confronted about the lies? ( yes NABJ was great!!!) when asked a serious question, his strategy is to insult the person asking. Then he ignores it.

The schools like Carlisle are an ugly stain on our history. Slavery, the Japanese internment during WWII, treatment of our indigenous population, redlining and other common and acceptable practices against specific groups were and are abhorrent practices. We see it today applied to voting rights, housing, inferior schools, lack of proper medical treatment, within our legal and penal systems. Racists will always find a way to mistreat those considered inferior. Unfortunately, racism is alive and well in today's society; more subtle, perhaps, but still practiced.

It makes you wonder why anyone thinks we are still the greatest country in the world. Perhaps the rest of the world has gotten worse.

It’s our ideals and potential that makes us great. We are only limited in this country by what we, as a people, decide to be limited by. When we do bad we can always get better. When we do good, the sky is the limit!

I'm not sure the timing of this - was several years ago. But I remember North Dakota's Senator at the time was helping the Reservations to acquire ADDRESSES so they could be registered to vote. Many of the reservations didnt have actual addresses and they & their Senator worked really hard to make that happen. So they could VOTE!! That was only a few years ago. Which should tell us all exactly the reality of life on some of these reservations. What was done to these families and entire tribes isnt going to be wiped out by some monuments or an apology. This is one of the biggest shames of this country. Not that the US is alone in that. That kind of policy still exists.

Sedition Stefanik hasn’t changed her tune. She is still thinking that her MAGA rhetoric will help her achieve her goal. Attacking Walz , in my opinion, is a mistake. Improving the lives of Minnesotans is a good thing. What has Miss Harvard done to improve the lives of the people of NY21? I can’t think of a single thing!

The Stefanik statement includes the usual buzz words "far left," "radical," "destroy America," and so on. Almost as if the statement (and that of others can be AI generated to gin up and reinforce the thoughts of those who would be inclined to agree. On the other hand, there are comments about the Harris?Walz campaign that use the words "joy" or "excitement" or "happiness." Not fear words. It does seem, according to today's polls (and many things can happen before November 5), that if the momentum continues, America may be seeing another turning point in reinventing itself. Something that seems to happen every +/- 40 years or so (TR's Progressivism, FDR's New Deal, JRK, Reagan, and now Harris/Walz)

PBS aired a 6 part series about a year ago called Little Bird. It is an exquisite story of the "Sixties Sweep" in Canada in which Native American children were virtually kidnapped by the State and sent to boarding schools where their cultures were erased and they were put up for adoption by non-Native families. Little Bird becomes a "successful" adult in her adoptive, Jewish home, is engaged,

complete with diamond ring, but is compelled to leave to find her birth family. Her journey reveals the degradation and tragedy inflicted on our Indigenous people, but she finally does find her mother and her identity.

Kent Monkman is a contemporary Canadian Cree, whose work has been featured in the lobby of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He is a visual and performance artist who appropriates and recasts 19th century landscape to symbolize the theft of his heritage. One painting shows children being forcibly removed from their homes by the "Mounties" while mothers scream and nuns look on with approval.

Thorpe's heartbreaking experience was far from unique.

Thanks for calling our attention to an important issue. Perhaps one way of atoning for the mistakes (sins) of the past is by addressing and correcting the injustices of the present.

As to the incivility of the congresswoman, there can be no civility where there is no humility.

(By the way, Vance is not “shadowing” Harris and Walz through the Midwest, as some say. He is STALKING them. Scary!)

I’ve read a lot over the years about the boarding schools and the abuses ( beyond taking children from their parents) and it breaks my heart. I can’t imagine the pain these children and families endured. Sometimes I’m very ashamed of the things our country has done. To recognize these atrocities is the first step to begging forgiveness from their ancestors. I actually thought we had come a long way from that until Trump started taking children from families at the border and folks were ok with that. Stunning. As for Stefanik- what else is new. They know their constituents believe any lies they tell with no investigations as to whether it is a fact or not. They get away with it and pay no price except their darkened souls which they will have to face at some point.
