You changed the subject. I do not disagree with her own policy. I call her out for her lying and poor behavior that would never be accepted by our parents when we were growing up or our own children. This is not about policy. It is about right and wrong. And if you still believe the verdict is out on climate change, then you need to crack a book.

(Just FYI, you can hit the 3 little dots and edit comments. It’s a power that should only be used for good, but this is a good case for it)

What I would like to see Stefanik accomplish would be to use her leadership position in a manner that is prescribed by the Declaration of Independence, to use just powers in line with consent of the governed. To find consent rather than to create division.

Well, I was just paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson, so if I was very vague blame him.

Generally speaking the best advice is very vague, do the right thing, treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.

You know who else was very vague? Jesus. The guy rarely told people exactly what to do. He didn’t say “don’t stone that woman.” He said to let the person without sin cast the first stone and then everyone else could join in with gusto. Pretty vague. What did he mean by sin? Regular sin, mortal sin, original sin? He should have been much more specific.

You’re just here engaging in sophistry, to be polite. You don’t get to set the rules for what is debated. But, if it makes you feel good to declare victory. Huzzah!

Bridget Shaw left a brilliant comment on the very least that should be expected of Elise Stefanik if she wanted to fulfill her claims of independence or bipartisanship. Also, she promised to serve only 5 terms anyway.

If she gets her fondest wish tho, I suppose she’ll be whisked off to be Orange Jesus’ running mate.

Expand full comment

Do you always put words into other people’s mouths? Maybe your personal perception of politics is the problem.

I recognize that she has a very different worldview and I’m not providing a specific list of demand which I know she won’t adhere to. My position is a good one. I just want her to consider individual issues in a balanced fashion and making decisions that attempt to achieve consensus. That isn’t vague.

Expand full comment

If you are saying Republicans believe in lying and that Democrats don’t then that is true. This entire column is about Elise Stefanik’s moral failure. That you support that moral failure means you need to do some soul searching.

Expand full comment

I just want her to stop lying her ass off and stop calling any opponent corrupt and unconstitutional.

Mike, you write “What I would like to see Stefanik accomplish would be to use her leadership position in a manner that is prescribed by the Declaration of Independence, to use just powers in line with consent of the governed.” When Carl challenges you, you then claim you are “Well, I was just paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson, so if I was very vague blame him”

So, you want Stefanik to specifically follow the words penned Thomas Jefferson that you later say are very vague, It’s like the teacher that tells the child if you see something say something and when the child does just that the teach tells the child don’t be a tattletale.

Are you also paraphrasing Jesus` when you write “He said to let the person without sin cast the first stone and then everyone else could join in with gusto.” The following link suggest that Jesus had some pollical skills since he was able to negotiate hostile climate

https://interestingliterature.com/2023/04/let-he-without-sin-cast-the-first-stone-meaning/#

What are your thoughts on the vagueness doctrine?

Expand full comment

I didn’t say I was being vague. Carl did. IF is an important word. I did not accept Carl’s erroneous contention, but IF he believed it to be vague he should not blame me but Thomas Jefferson. Personally I don’t believe Jefferson was being vague. Carl did not “challenge” me, he misread, misunderstood, or more likely was predisposed to want to argue rather than find agreement.

So your response entirely misses the point.

My question to you, are you asking questions to find common ground or simply trying to find stuff to disagree with?

It is very clear she represents the desires (not to be confused with the interests) of a comfortable majority of NY21 voters.

That still does not answer the question: what exactly has Stefanik accomplished for us her constituents in the last few years?

Given that she consistently commands the support of around 55-60% of voters in her district, SOMEONE should be able to answer that question.

I looked and none of these would been become law without the support of Senator Schumer, who is very careful to make sure that the North Country is not forgotten. As far as I can tell the only legislative item that Rep. Stefanik initiated, that became law, was the naming of the post office in Plattsburgh. You can look it up.

Also worth pointing out that a politician governing "in consent with actions according to elections" does not have any relevance to the accusation that s/he is terrible.

Kathy Hochul, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrant just won re-election in which constituents expressed approval of their job performance. Does that mean no one can say they stink?

I’m continually impressed that Stefanik detractors are able to spell her name correctly while those enamored of her come up with infinite misspellings. Very strange. Reminds me of Orange Leader going with her to Watertown and mispronouncing her name. Maybe if she had one that was a little more Anglo and not quite so foreign. Maybe her family should’ve anglicized it like the Drumpf family did. How unfortunate that after they went to all that trouble Drumpf’s grandson is re-embracing the little guy with the Chaplin mustache they were trying to disavow.

I suppose it’d be too much to ask of Stefanik that she come out and say President Biden won the election rather than engage in little tricks like congratulating him for being sworn in. That’s the sort of thing the right got apoplectic with Bill Clinton for. With Elise, I suppose they just see it as clever. So clever, she is.

When Trump purposely mispronounced her name in front of hundreds of active duty Army personnel and she sucked it up, continued smiling … that is when Trump knew he owned her soul. That’s how he judges loyalty, that he can purposely belittle people and they say nothing. It is a sign of people with weak character. Stefanik failed and virtually the entirety of GOP leadership failed the test.

Not to be picky, but the Declaration of Independence is not the governing document of the United States. The Constitution is. Two very different documents.

Correct. The Declaration is the founding document setting the intention of the new state. It sets the ideals on which the Articles were used to form a government and the constitution was written to correct problems in that former government. If one is to consider the intent of what is written in the Constitution the Declaration provides a lot of context.

don't lie

don't repeat lies

don't avoid your constituents

don't practice hate speech

when your hate speech leads to deaths in Buffalo.. APOLOGIZE and STOP the hate speech

don't brag about 'results' when in nine years you have passed two bills into law and those were naming buildings

don't profit off of insider trading

don't break the law by meeting with your super pac

don't avoid all local media

don't send a lie-filled release to a weekly then 'share' it as if it was news

Thanks for this and the entire year Ken. I too would rather not have to pay attention, as that great New Yorker cartoon put it, "My desire to remain informed is at odds with my desire to remain sane". It's my mantra, but I go to the Dem meetings, lick stamps and put up road signs. And Elise kills the opposition anyway. One of the most disheartening aspects of all of this is, they vote for her. The most recent candidate, Matt Castelli was a flawed candidate insofar as he tried to run on her policies lite, succumbed to often stated notion that the Dems were as equally responsible for the current political deadlock. He was a 2nd amendment guy, but only the second half. But truth be told, one would have to be blind to think her support in this district due to her political skill, it's blood sport, and she more than most has a desire to "own the Libs" , and that's all that matters to our increasingly click baited short attention span culture. I get Elise's newsletter, and she brags about getting funding she voted against, telling us how accessible she is and bashing every single thing the Dems do. And she calls them names. So Elise has made one thing clear, if they're for it, we're against it. It's not how it works. The Republican party has devolved into "my way or highway" party and that is not how our system works. And I didn't even mention her support of Trump and her accusation of criminal activity of President Biden, where there is none to be found.

But truth be told, she responds to her constituents, who seem to enjoy her antics, who seem to be of the opinion that screwing things ups a good idea. She doesn't seem to know that politics is a gentle art, and that compromise is needed to advance our society. She now ignores climate change (that she used to at least acknowledge, and supports the guy who says he'll undo what President Biden has so skillfully accomplished, a small start on addressing climate disaster. So no, you didn't cover her too much, I'd say a good balance. Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year Ken, I never stop expecting miricles!

I have moved to Michigan, and then Eli$e remains in my sights since she called out MY VOTE in another state, in defense of a lie. A Big Lie. Could one one of your best posts Ken. You have hardly missed the mark when commenting on Stefanik's behavior. Her ways are a study in being awful and divisive and staying true to her course. Our predicament in the 21st continues to frustrate us while at the same time give her all the room she needs to continue on her mission. I think the problem with the Elise Stefanik issue is that she does win by a 2 to 1 margin over and over. To be overly critical is to say the majority of people here are stupid or at least sheepish. Web hits based on her name as a keyword are not votes.

Expand full comment

She mostly wins because it’s such a ruby red district. If she wanted to prove she actually has political chops, she’d run in Albany where she’s from. Instead, she used the fiction that she was a resident of Westport where her family’s summer camp is.

Nikki Haley recently pointed out the odd-shaped boxes Republicans have to contort themselves into to please the MAGA base. She managed to somehow end up saying the Civil War was about the economic freedom of slave owners.

Elise is a better contortionist than Haley, but there’s going to be a breaking point. Everyone who enters Trump’s orbit is destroyed. She thinks she’s clever enough to avoid that and hold the tiger’s tale. We’ll see.

Great list of her “accomplishments,” Ken. Thanks.
