Carl, while the national deb is a problem, that is not what this column is about. i'm sure you realize that few in Congress has show any appetite for cutting spending. Republicans often say they do, but national debt continued to grow significant under last administration. I know you know that.

Carl, you have to admit there is a certain hypocrisy about voting against the funding, then taking credit for it?

Of course we can be happy there’s money coming towards needed infrastructure, but if she were honest instead of duplicitous, Stefanik would say “Even though I voted against this, I was wrong. I see now that it is a good bill and helps my district.”

Wouldn’t that be refreshing!

If Stefanik had gotten her way (voting against the bill)there would be no monies for those local projects.

That is the point. And she would have repealed Obamacare.

What makes you say that? Having lived without health insurance, with Obamacare, and finally with really good employer provided health insurance (for which I pay a reasonable share of the premium), I can say from experience being without insurance is worrisome and potentially dangerous because of putting off care, Obamacare had its flaws but was way better than the nothing I had before, and having insurance with good coverage so I don’t have to worry about a health problem bankrupting me is the best of all.

We pay taxes and the government does things with our taxes that we could not do as individuals. Why do you think providing a way for people to get health care coverage was not a sound choice?

Just another attempt to excuse the inexcusable.

I pay my taxes, so my income helps pay for these programs which I see as beneficial. Government spending (our money) helps stimulate economic growth, seen routinely under Democratic administrations.

In a country with a $28 trillion economy and growing, while we are spawning billionaires at a staggering rate.

Our deficit at this time is not a serious problem, nor is our rate of spending as it is at a level that maintains and improves the economy. We do have a problem in that the very wealthy are not returning portions of their generated wealth back to the government that provided them so much opportunity at a rate commensurate with the gain they make relative to ordinary workers. That needs to be fixed

Thanks for your response!

I understand your position. It is exactly the philosophy that those who wish to benefit from the security society provides without paying a fair amount to fund security everyone should hold.

The reality is that our government provides numerous benefits that accrue mostly to the very wealthy and create the ability for massive accumulation of wealth while excluding those benefits from many who are equally deserving and often from people who are more deserving.

Rapacious greed is rewarded in our society with adoration of the masses, connection to centers of power and wealth, and lower overall tax structures, while at the same time providing security in the form of of police and military protection, less scrutiny of activity to determine lawful conduct, and the ability to pass that privilege on generationally like monarchical power with none of the inherent responsiblity.

Billionaires everywhere love that they’ve blinded people like you to the scam they are perpetrating.

This is continued important reporting on Stefanik's hypocrisy. Recent podcasts have also highlighted similar behavior from other Republican representatives who claimed credit for funding from bills they obstructed by voting against them. Note here re: Colorado Lauren Boebert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhlI0A3kEi0.. .we can all help correct these lies by writing to the local officials who are perpetuating Stefanik's misinformation and asking them to apologize to their constituents for their misrepresenting her bad faith claims.

Good idea. I think writing to local Elise supporters who are elected to office always hear from their constituents. The Whitehall Supervisor I worked with still supports her. It's appalling.

Sorry, Sara - I didnt read your comment before I made mine. Great minds, right?

Considering how many of these local politicians write these endorsement of Stefanik, you can't help but wonder if they are being pressured to write endorsements. What is especially disheartening is that many of the small weekly newspapers are running these tributes from her press releases and giving her credit without a fact check.

We hear so much about many who write post cards to help elect a candidate - which seems to work - why not send cards with the true information - just short paragraphs - to each of these people who are pushing her propaganda? Seems as though if they hear from their own constituents telling them this - possibly it would wake them up?? Maybe?

Expand full comment

You can certainly copy links to this column to them as well.

Sure sounds like a good idea to me.

Also a side note off subject, I'm reading "Our Hidden Conversations" by Michele Norris. She asked people to participate in a six-word exercise through what she called the Race Card Project. She printed out 200 little black postcards asking people to condense their thoughts on race or cultural identity into ONE sentence of six words. The front of the cards read:

Race. Your Thoughts. 6 words. Please send. And people DID!

She left them in bookstores, restaurants, writing desks at hotels, inflight magazines at airlines or sugar stations at Starbucks. This was 14 years ago - she STILL is getting cards back. (I'm sure that there were more than 200 over the years.)

With our current divisions - many about race - it appears far too many NEED an actual conversation about race.

I grew up in a small village in NY - as I remember, there were NO Black or African-American families until I was in high school. Now maybe generations before me? Who knows. Maybe there was a reason for that.

So, the Race Card Project sure does sound like a really good idea.

Proves post cards still have their place, doesnt it?

Though your writings are worthy of much wider distribution, it’s scary to discover your work has been stolen in a way that threatens your online security and personal identity. Have to wonder if Stefanik has a tech team determined to undermine your persistent exposure of her perpetual lies/pathological manipulations which she mimics from her hero Herr tRump and his speechwriters/rally rants.

AP and other still-reputable news outlets online/some major cable news programs are now echoing your well-researched truths re: Elise’s twisted claims re: critical legislation she has vetoed. This broader media focus is essential in the weeks/months ahead to neutralize the forked-tongue utterings from Stefanik’s warped mouth/crooked website.

(Though the Chronicle’s editor may persist in his self-serving glorification of Stefanik, his local business ad GOP-leaning tribe may have threatened to pull their ads if he does otherwise.)

Thanks for reminding us of Clemson’s game today, and that Joe Girard III’s dream of NCAA competition has already been achieved! Go Joe!

*Recent research in the journal “Frontiers in Public Health” cites evidence that watching sports, Live or on TV, benefits us all…”with increased feelings of well-being and social connectedness… boosting cognition…and reducing stress.” The NCAA tournament is great timing for us armchair spectators while we hunker down for the storm systems headed our way!

They tried banning me from her page once….. i am not sure but i don't think they can do that with her government page….was unbanned quickly when i “‘appealed”. That happened about the time when FB minions started determining what comments were “relevant” and moved what comments they decided were not relevant (any anti-Stefanik comments) to the “all comments” section. They situated the “most relevant “ page to be the first page seen and had to find the ‘all comments” section. Then, i posted the cartoon where Trump was drinking from a Clorox bottle 😊 and ended up with a 39 day ban - which lasted about 5 minutes once i appealed. It’s been fun.

Sedition Stefanik’s hypocrisy is nothing new. From her first term in Congress she portrayed herself as a moderate and that was nothing but a ruse. She would only vote with the Democrats when she was given permission to do so because the Republican majority didn’t need her vote to pass their legislation.

I wondered if this was the case after reading in her weekly newsletter boasting that she had “secured” and “delivered” federal funding or “through the appropriations process” millions of dollars for various North Country infrastructure projects. I don’t know if writing local officials and asking them to apologize will have any effect. I wonder if showing up at Town/Village meetings and asking for clarification would better serve the community? Especially if a Reporter is there and we can get it out in our local newspapers.

On another note, if we want to see change we have got to get people out to the polls. I worked the Village of Whitehall Special Election on Tuesday and out of 1330 voters, 29 people voted. It appears that people either don’t know about upcoming elections or are apathetic.

I’d like to comment on the brief article about “ dropping AP” and its ultimate effect on readership being denied the opportunity for national or worldwide news outlets. It’s unfortunate, however, it’s an expected consequence of the overriding fact that print news media is in an inevitable death spiral. This doesn’t necessarily mean that people will be denied access to national or world news . I have

“ discovered” national and worldwide news access is abundant on the internet and conveniently available on Smart TV’s. In fact the variety and amount of news outlets on Smart TV is a bit overwhelming. I grew up in a day and age when there were three networks ( even PBS had yet

to be “ invented”). Nowadays, electronic access to national and international sources of news, commentary and current events is abundant ….if not overwhelming. It is understandable that print media and print media news services are in a death spiral. …..so astute news consumers have moved on to more accessible sources ….like Substack for instance!

Here in the far North, This is how Elise is spinning her NO vote: Quote from North Country Now:

"The town of Massena was also awarded $4.5 million on Feb. 23 as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law General Supplement grant program, which was part of a deal the Congresswoman voted against in November of 2021 calling it part of "radical agenda."

Stefanik is now facing criticism for taking credit for the project due to her vote against the 2021 bill that allowed funding to flow to Massena.

But, she says she was able to shepherd the application through the appropriations committee, fast tracking the funds that will allow the project to commence construction this summer."

So she votes no against the bill, but then takes credit for the funding that flows to her district.

The hypocrisy makes one's head spin.
