“...she had without exception the most stupid, vulgar, empty mind that he had ever encountered. She had not a thought in her head that was not a slogan, and there was no imbecility, absolutely none that she was not capable of swallowing if the Party handed it out to her. 'The human sound-track' he nicknamed her in his own mind.” - George Orwell, 1984
The bill was first introduced a decade ago by Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, a Westchester Democrat who leads the body’s Health Committee, at a time when few states were considering such measures.
Ms. Paulin had her own reasons for prioritizing the measure: The year before, she had watched her sister die after a battle with cancer that had left her in screaming pain.
She said the bill offered compassion to those in the most difficult circumstances.
“It’s something that could give peace of mind, relieve extraordinary pain at the end of death, and give families comfort, that they could be with their loved one when they’re dying,” Ms. Paulin said in an interview. “Why wouldn’t we do that?”

Factually accurate assessments like yours are what drives me to the streets in peaceful protest this weekend for the first time in fifty-three years. So many grievances to redress at every level of governance these days. We must save ourselves now for the sake of our grandchildren’s futures. Only a few of those elected have the willpower or wisdom to make things right again.
Thanks Ken for calling out Trump's New York mouthpiece. I've always taken some consolation in living in a blue state that values things like health care, environmental protection and a strong social safety net. But the storm clouds are forming... Governor Hochul's Lieutenant Governor has defected and Elise is setting the stage for a Governor's run, Trump style. The nightmare scenario is taking shape and I hope New Yorkers will stand true to the values that have made us the Empire State. And BTW, Trump's actions in LA are simply a trial run for interfering, to put it mildly, in the mid-terms. Please keep an eye on that.
I hope Hochul signs the Medical Aid in Dying Act into law. I, too, was sickened when I saw Stefanik on TV Monday night standing in the NYS Senate. She should be in her district office or in Washington DC. She stood there next to Republican Robert Ortt shaking her head at the thought of this Act becoming Law. It is very possible that Stefanik's cruel, ignorant rhetoric can win her the Governorship. Reading some of the comments on Facebook on TU posts, News 10/Channel 13 posts, the "readers" lead me to believe that many of them are all on board for authoritarianism. NYC is on the verge of nominating the disgraced Andrew Cuomo as the Democratic Candidate for Mayor. Cuomo is trump-lite, thin-skinned and vindictive. I have no confidence that NYS can remain in the Democrats hands.
Living now in MI, I do have a perspective on New York, and y'all are ahead of us here in climate legislation and dignity in dying, so congratulations on those hard-fought achievements.
I am just sad about Eli$e and her all too-achievable political prospects. I remember too well her support for Trump's first foray into gassing his own citizens for his Bible stunt in DC in June of 2020. Stefanik immediately praised the performance, and remember Trump had General Milley by his side in his theatrical power walk. Milley later lamented his involvement and called Trump out for his authoritarian tendencies, to no avail to the average voter.
The second season of The Trump Presidency is more violent with fewer civil rights and a more fascist military. For what end, Eli$e?
...yes [please!!!] to Death With Dignity / Republicans, of today, are against it? No surprise- though the reason is unclear- are they sadistic, or, simply: unfeeling...
Having conducted water quality research at Lake George for the previous five decades, I can report that "climate change" at the lake is real and definitely problematic. Back in the early 1980s, we conducted the Lake George Urban Runoff Study at Lake George, which was part of the US EPA Nationwide Urban Runoff Program. At the time, 60-75% of the annual runoff used to occur during the period from December through April, mostly from the annual melting of the winter snow-pack each year. Now, things are different and we clearly can see from the most recent few months that the seasonality of the runoff/precipitation has changed. The result is a more extended, nutrient-rich growing season which often leads, under the appropriate conditions, to HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms). By the time the Republicans take their heads out of the sand and figure out that what is happening and being documented is "credible" science, it may be too late to make sufficient changes to make any difference.....
yes, thank you for this. The Republicans only care about themselves and getting richer at the expense of the environment and low income people. We need to vote every single one of them out of office. They only cause harm. Preserving the environment is our individual responsbility now. that's all we can do....sadly.
Folks all you need to do is take a drive through her district, especially her hometown of Schuylerville and see the many small shops that have closed down. Is this what we want our state to look like? No thanks!!
It’s a rare talent to be able to lie as effortlessly as Stefanik does. It’s no surprise Karoline Leavitt is her protégé. Mike Lawler is going to have his work cut out for him if he expects to outdo her gaslighting.
Lawler had aspirations to run for and become governor. But, then came Elise. Especially after the dismissal of her nomination for U.S. Ambassador at the UN, by her dear Donald.
My $ is on that Elise will run for governor and Mike will run as her running "mate" for Lt. Gov.
Mike, as Elise did, has turned into full MAGA/Trumpism. Don't know who's been writing Mike's posts lately on X, but it sounds more like Alex D than Mike L.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Stefanik is nothing but a mini tRump who doesn’t give a crap about the people in her district or anywhere else…only power. She is the epitome of greed and ego.
Wake up North Country and next time elect someone who actually cares about you!

Man, I need to back and read "1984" again.
It’s chilling all over again.
Perfect!

"Los Angeles burning"
Rather than Los Angeles burning, what is actually on fire is our U.S. Constitution. Trump has torched it on a daily basis.
Perfectly put!

These things happen slowly with the military being used and elections threatened. It doesn't happen all at once. People need to pay attention.
Perfectly stated!
I like Governor Hochul....governor bashing is not new in New York.

All true about Cuomo.
Both Stefanik and Cuomo sold their soul to the devil....voting them in supports the evilness of Republicans. Vote BLUE

Oh, she is running, unless she is trying to leverage running for a job in cabinet.
he won't be able to.....there is too much Republican money behind them. they plan to take over.
Since I work for myself, if I don’t do my job I don’t get paid by the customer.
Lucky for Stefanik she is a government employee and she gets paid either way.
I doubt she refuses the salary and benefits even if she minimizes the work she does on behalf of her constituents.
