Many rural organizations depended on the community paper to announce meetings, church dinners, etc. Facebook fills in some but it's not the same as a having a newspaper.
The example I think of is my brother in law did a weekly Sunday column for St Lawrence County newspapers Hooks and Antlers that included outdoor sportsmen information. If you were planning a fishing tournament you would call Mike and it would be in the paper that most people would check, even if was only to read his article. I volunteer with the Rensselaer County Conservation Alliance and communicating to the public is much different and difficult
newspapers to receive assistance, but for local papers to have that assistance come from the very institutions we expect a free press to be the watchdog over, in my opinion does not bode well. To expect a paper to freely and honestly critique the source of their financial life jacket, if you will, at the very least raises the issue of the appearance of a conflict of interest or in fact a conflict of interest.
Many journalists have expressed that same concern, but if the alternative is letting journalism wither - and democracy with it - then maybe this is worth a try.
Trust in journalism(the news) is already under siege, to even be considered a mouth piece for the government, which ever party is in control, would be the final nail in the coffin of believing journalists are free and unbiased.
I don’t think local newspapers are under quite the same siege as the national cable news and others. I don’t believe that would be the perspective of local readers.
I hope you are right, but as long as local newspapers cover national and international news in any fashion I think many readers will have serious reservations trusting what is and what is not covered. I know I would.
I am confused. You state that support for newspapers is in the 1.75 billion package or at least in and out depending on the version of the bill. I was not aware of that and fully supportive. Now for the confusion part. You state that Stefanik supports some other bill supporting local newspapers. Never heard of that bill. Are they one and the same thing.
Stefanik is very good at reading the will of the people, and at recognizing when she can do something popular without it costing her anything. This will not pass, so she can get away with claiming to support it. How would she vote if it was going to be close? However the GOP leadership wanted her to......
Stefanik probably wants the newspapers saved so she can try to spread her lies. I know The Post Star calls her out, but I don't know about others.
Just words if she has no intention of supporting the reconciliation bill.

These types of services by the local newspaper are the connective tissue for a community.

My guess is the WDT or another friendly media outlet reached out to her. This costs her nothing and her vote doesn't matter

She signed as co-sponsor of original so not sure what other bill you are referring.
God bless Ms. Cantwell all over the place. And we should write Elise and thank her for doing this extremely impressed thing!!!
