Granted there are many that feel screwed by government but the people that organized the boat parades in their 6 & 7 figure boats surely have it pretty good. These folks seemed hellbent on throwing a wrench in the status quo and sticking it to the half the country they don’t like.
They’re ok with and want authoritarianism for other people because the rules never applied to them anyway.
Just read “The Last American Newspaper” chapter on Stefanik. It lays out her continues stream of lies and unethical behavior. When a protester threatened The Post-Star, she invited him to be her guest at a town hall meeting. That is who she is.
Edward, you say Stefanik was asked to take a no-lie pledge and refused then she signed it and lied right after that. numerous times. Just above Ken said they asked Elise Stefanik “not to lie” in 2017. She refused. So, the question is, what is the truth? Did she or did she not sign the pledge?
I watch the video. What one believes and what one can prove are two different things. You believe she lied; I see a person skilled in the art of rhetoric.
Can you prove see knew the intern?
At what time line marker did she say “the intern wasn't paid”?
Can you prove she was aware of what the young was doing?
You say Stefanik in the interview is doing what Codd did, saying one thing in public and another in private. After watching the interview, I do not see the connection care to explain.
but it seems pretty clear you didn't watch it, and that you are going to find a way to ignore her lies.. but I will help you
1- article showing she knew preston scagnelli picture with her (https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/36756/20180803/seaglefestival.org) and preston (there are others on the internet including her marching in a parade.. if putting your arm around your intern isn't enough to say she knew the intern.. maybe you should question #pos_tefanik’s memory
2- question -- thirty-five seconds "my campaign doesn't employ trackers"
Her campaign hired preston, her campaign paid him, preston is a tracker.... she in fact does employ trackers. That is a lie
1:15.. “I don't know the name of the individual,” when asked if she knew him.
Again the guy she hugs and works for her and is paid for by her campaign
"I am not aware of the individual"
It is clear to me what she is doing is pretending like the guy she KNOWS is not the guy that Lauren Rosenthall is asking about.
3- preston was sent to spy on minors (which I am feeling you are okay with)
4- you need to move on from the video to the point where everything she said in the video is not true.. did she dance around the truth and ignore facts -- yes. you believe she is using rhetoric, I get it.. you want to ignore her lies (and at this point I now suspect you are actually preston scagnelli)
5- can I prove yes... but then you would have to get your friend #pos_tefanik to answer my questions under oath and attached to a polygraph.
BUT next time you see her ---> advise her not to do that because I would follow up with questions on how she funded the insurrection, her knowledge of stolen classified documents at mar-a-lardo and about how she profited off insider trading
Thanks she will end up in jail if she does not take the fifth.
Your last point, another one that you ignored what I wrote and what is recorded --- Cobb said in the recording that #pos_tefanik used (the secretly recorded one, invading the privacy of minors) that She would never say publicly she would ban assault weapons.
She still hasn’t publicly said it
I have a favor to ask, if you are going to dance your answers around this one, please tell us the song you are dancing to and if #pos_tefanik is conducting.
Edward, I see you avoided answering my first question.
You sure do make many assumptions. For one, assuming I didn’t watch the video. If I didn’t watch the video, how would I have known to ask where in the timeline she said, “the intern wasn't paid”. Which you have in this reply change to "my campaign doesn't employ trackers"
You have now added additional to support your case.
The interview was on Jul 30, 2018 on Aug 03, Rep. Elise Stefanik told the Post-Star that 17-year-old Preston Scagnelli is now an unpaid intern. That’s 4 days after she did the interview. If the timeline was reversed, yup you would have had her, but it’s not. As for what she told Michael Goot about Scagnelli starting interning with her campaign in June, there are passable explanations for why she was unaware of who he was. Doesn’t mean they will be true, just sufficient answer the question why she was unaware of who he was at the time of the interview.
I don’t see where you have proven your case. Most of your response is what you believe, and a good portion of your responses are a logical fallacy, follow the link to learn more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem
Al, I like your one-liners. So, if she and her ilk must go, how do you plan on accomplishing this goal? Like most here, hope that the people who view her through a deferent lens have a sudden moment of insight and see her as they do?
The start would be for Democrats to find a good LOCAL candidate to run against her, not someone imported from elsewhere like all of Elise's other opponents except Cobb.
The problem is that state Dems have largely given up on the North Country so there are so few elected Dems (the ones with enough name recognition and ties to mount a serious challenge) in lower offices. It's an uphill task no matter what but a someone with strong local ties is their only chance.
I think Billy Jones, Assemblyman from Malone, would be their best shot. I'm not sure if he'd give up a comfortable seat in the Assembly majority for an uphill battle against an opponent with no scruples and tons of resources.
• finding a good LOCAL candidate? #pos_tefanik is not local
• not sure, at t his point, why #pos_tefanik needs to be voted out... One way would be to ensure she doesn't represent a gerrymandered district. Another way would be to address some of the legal shortcomings of #pos_tefanik. As tight as she is with humpy trmpy.. I would guess she has committed some crimes ( like KNOWing about classified documents)
I’ve registered as Republican so I can sign a petition and vote for Jill Lochner next year. The most important thing is getting rid of Trump and Trumpism. For your consideration.
I wouldn’t if I thought there was a chance of getting a Democrat elected, but that really doesn’t seem realistic. I thought Tedra was a good candidate and obviously wasn’t a carpetbagger like the tourist from Albany is. She’s a longtime resident and would’ve made a good rep for the North Country. Matt Castelli seemed like he should’ve done better, too. Neither came close.
I’m sure there are a lot of Dems that wouldn’t like it. To me, the chance of electing a respectable Republican is better than tossing time and money on a losing effort backing a Dem.
Jill Lochner seems like a reasonable person who would work with Dems. You don’t have to go far to be an improvement over someone who mouths “far left Democrat” like a parrot, tho.
The fundamental problem that both liberals and non-fascist independents and Republicans have is this. The truth is that Elise well represents the desires of a comfortable enough majority of NY21 voters. Liberals get mad at me when I say this but the election results are pretty clear in this.
She doesn't represent their interests at all but she does represent their desires. Her opponents resent that voters don't recognize this difference. But until they can figure out how to move the needle on this, she will be comfortable in her present job (unless she gets what she really wants which is Trump's VP slot).
Not to speak for Adk Contrarian, but it is clear that #pos_tefanik does NOT vote for the interests of #ny21 (both dems and republicans).
If you drive through the north country and see the number of hmpy trmpy flags, it is clear they desire a corrupt criminal.. and those people desire someone who lies and supports the twice-impeached criminal.
They/we need legal elections. #pos_tefanik voted to over-turn a legal election.
I suspect #pos_tefanik used her dark money to finance and organize the Jan6 rally and subsequent insurrection
no one needed that, but those trumpies desired that and a validation to their hate and ignorance.
When you ask working people in the district what they need, you get a variety of answers, of course. But some common ones are finding decent jobs, making ends meet, housing, child care and broadband.
When you hear Stefanik supporters explaining why they support her, the most common responses have to do with their dislike of liberals/Democrats, their loathing of everything "woke" (just don't ask them to define that term) and their love of Donald Trump.
In most cases, their reasons for supporting her do not have any relationship whatsoever to her addressing - not even solving but just concrete efforts to help - their own professed needs.
Again, this is their own statements about their needs and their own statements about why they support her, not mine.
She is constantly touting her support of Fort Drum. The military is the one institution that is not under attack. But every politician - Dem or GOP - has supported Fort Drum. So do Schumer and Gillibrand.
Elise enjoys the complacency of a very RED congressional district. I have witnessed the unfortunate practice of my neighbors voting for anyone with that “R” by their name. There seems to be far too little interest in actual
First and foremost a woman’s right to privacy and unregulated health care. And then I guess as my parents always said, “Honesty is the best policy”. Unfortunately, Elise didn’t have parents that shared that value.
ADK Contrarian, when you said Elise doesn’t represent the interests but the desires of a majority of her voters, it was a lightbulb moment for me. You cleared up something that has confused and frustrated me for years. How does she and others like her get so many people to so consistently vote against their own interests? It seems like eventually they would realize they’re being bamboozled…But of course, if you are pitching desire, you are selling something that people always want more of, but can never get enough of. Thank you for the wise words!!
Thanks. I think the issue in much of rural America is that people there don't believe that either major party will serve their interests. Certainly that's true in the Adirondacks. Rural NY is largely an afterthought to the urban and suburban Dems who control the state legislature. We can't even get actual action on a road salt bill to protect drinking water that everyone agrees on! At the same time, rural towns and counties controlled by Republicans are largely doing worse than those in the same state controlled by Democrats. Eight of the ten counties in NYS with the highest poverty rates are dominated by Republicans. Rural people are fatalist and think that no one is going to represent their actual interests so if they represent their desires, something is better than nothing. This is a perfect breeding ground for fascism. In every historical example I can think of, fascism has risen in places where the traditional ruling class has been discredited as corrupt, impotent and/or out of touch. The US is no different. If the Democratic Party were strong and offered a compelling, affirmative agenda, they'd wipe the floor with the fascists. If they'd been strong, the Republican Party would never have gone fascist in the first place.
I mean, look how many local races in NY21 - outside of the biggest municipalities - actually have Democratic candidates. Very few. The first step in offering a good option is offering an option.
that is the problem with #pos_tefanik. Normally you know where the train goes... you might not know where it stops.. but you know where it goes
#pos_tefanik is off the rails.. she, herself, doesn't know where she is going. hmpy trymp will push her further and further into his lies and corruption.
She now must go where he tells her, she has no autonomy
"Lust for power" is exactly the issue here. Democracy doesn't matter to Stefanik. She has no "big picture" and doesn't care about the impact to the country her child will grow up to inherit. Selfishness and greed for power and money despite the cost-that should be on the new MAGA hats for 2024.
The NYT reports that after receiving the recent DOJ target letter, Trump called Stefanik and commanded her to go on the offensive. She has been offensive for a long time. The thing is that her offense is predicated on lies, fraud and deceit. But, then again, those are the weapons of her boss. Too bad that she doesn't work for the honest citizens of her district.
Ken-This is surreal. I can only hope that this region and the entire country can see through this veil of dishonesty and unfairness. It seems so clear to me. I am embarassed for our great country for the first time ever....and a bit frightened.
Seems like a big gamble the GOP is making in putting all their chips on Trump getting re-elected. It’s okay for Stefanik to go all in on conspiracy theories to defend Trump. Those 18 Republicans in Biden districts probably aren’t going to be as eager. That includes the 6 in NY. If I was any of them I wouldn’t want to be seen with her. Of course, one is “George Santos.” So, birds of a feather and all.
Democracy was on the ballot in 2022 and did pretty well. Republicans barely took back the House when they should’ve gotten to a 30 seat plus majority. I’m not going to spend over a year being pessimistic anyway. Midterms are supposed to be a lot more disastrous for sitting presidents than giving Spineless Kevin a 5 seat majority.
It’s incredible that anyone wants to attach themselves to what’s going to be presented at Trump’s January 6th trial. It’s weird that legacies just don’t matter anymore. Stefanik is pretty young still. Another 40 or 50 years is a long time to be equated with the likes of Joe McCarthy. He did have the decency to drink himself to death anyway.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) was eager to weigh in at a weekly news conference of House Republican leaders. “I want to comment on the breaking news,” she told reporters. “We have yet again another example of Joe Biden’s weaponized Department of Justice targeting his top political opponent, Donald Trump.” Washington Post
Yeah, Biden’s so vindictive that he weaponized Michigan to indict 16 fake Republican electors on 8 charges each. And he weaponized Arizona so they’re investigating the same thing. And we’ll see how weaponized Georgia is in the next couple weeks, too.
It’s amazing the power of Sleepy Joe Biden that he can even weaponize purple states.
Stefanik has already made her sad choice. Harvard Grad Stefanik chose the attention, the access, the money that belonging to Cult45 brings. Party over country is a long-term loser but pandering fool Elise is living her moment of fame. It is a disgrace what the House GOP are doing with zero regard for anything but their immediate future. To hell with their oath of office! The electorate has to wake up and vote these fraudulent actors out of our lives.
I am going to forward this column to the editorial board at the Gazette and ask them if they will rescind their endorsement of Stefanik. I am a huge supporter of local journalism, but that endorsement prompted me to cancel that subscription.
Like most Republican politicians, Stefanik is threading a needle that would be tough to pull off if her base of support was strong in the critical thinking area. She's bleating on about "law and order" and blasting state Dems for being "soft on crime," while hitching her wagon to someone who is not simply a serial criminal (proven so in the courts) but who brags about it.
The question is whether local Republicans will denounce her for her anti-democracy stands. Last election, only LG supervisor Dennis Dickinson had the guts to do so even mildly. It's risky. We know she and her toady De Grasse are super petty and vindictive. Still, it's really a shame that Matt Simpson, who is the right kind of public servant, doesn't have the guts to distance himself from a member of Congress who is the complete opposite. I hope he will grow that spine. I am not optimistic any of them will.
Power seekers lose all sense of right or wrong. All they are interested in is the "Power" and they will concoct any scheme to achieve it .Just look at Europe and Asia in the 1930's and '40s. From day one it was obvious that was the case with Trump and people like Stefanik. I am just amazed and dismayed that so many people have bought into it because they think it is Conservatism.
can we take a moment and look at the failure of journalism
1) I know you like to cite the post-star as un-bias and that they endorsed #pos_tefanik
can we admit that was a mistake, that she is a liar... that she is a danger to democracy...
AND any endorsement helped that a long?
2) if a newspaper job is to report the facts, but also to explain the importance of those facts and educated.. isn't it pretty obvious that most of #pos_tefanikkk's district did not learn anything.. that the education did not hold to them?
3) unrelated tangent --> I enjoy your column, but isn't it clear you do more in a week here about the lies of #pos_tefanik than the post-star does in a month. As it is they basically run her press releases over facts.
There is a barrage of lies from the #pos_tefanik camp.. that are NOT covered... but the important story.. she is raising money.
4) instead, why isn't their equal coverage of other people who are involved in #ny21 ? not about money... but the actual campaign
at the very least reporters could keep score... I don't know if or how many times Jill Lochner lied this month... but #pos_tefanik has lied 4-5 times on social media in the last four hours
5) I know you are proud of the post-star, but I could go through most articles on the campaign and point out the things that are not journalism
You mean like CNN covering RFK Jr.'s shirtless push-ups? It never ceases to amaze me that our media reports the least important with the most coverage.
when #pos_tefanik hired a kid to lie and secretly record minors in NY21 my thought wasn't 'Cobb is lying about her stance on guns,' because it was consistent what she had said before'
to me the story was.. I don't know where abusing children becomes illegal, but if I found out #pos_tefanik was spying on my kids... I would want her in jail
I think the newspaper that I was a part of is much different for than the newspaper today. That is because of staffing. Again if you read “The Last American Newspaper” you will see that evolution play out. At our peak we had 45 people in newsroom. There are less than 10 today. The erosion of journalism is about the lack of staffing, not that the individuals got bad at it. Republicans also learned that if you accused the newspaper of being “biased” it would bend over backward to prove it was not. Most newspapers were slow to react to Trump’s stead stream of lies because they didn’t want to look like they were biased.
and yet no one calls stefanik a liar... are they still bending over backwards.
I would add that the paper I call local, has blocked me on facebook from being critical of them...
They also do not respond to emails asking them to run press releases I have sent them... If they are not running releases from people in their readership (I can only assume it is not just me that does not get their events in the paper or are critical of them and blocked)... what is the reason to by the paper. This is to day, some of the demise of newspapers are their own doing.
Neither do I. You can oppose people on issues, but not on democracy.
Granted there are many that feel screwed by government but the people that organized the boat parades in their 6 & 7 figure boats surely have it pretty good. These folks seemed hellbent on throwing a wrench in the status quo and sticking it to the half the country they don’t like.

Nailed it.
Power hungry and totally corrupted by the MAGA movement.
She only cares about her own career as is evident for quite some time now.
Her loyalty to trump is frightening and maddening to those of us who understand what is truly at stake here.
I still can't believe that half of our country buys into the con that is trump.
I've given up using logic and facts as they, (MAGA loyalists), do not care about reason and truth.
Side note....Stec is following in her footsteps.
It is frightening, but I do believe it is down to about a third believing - still bad - and I think it is shrinking further.
Let's hope.
She made her choice, I don't see how she could reverse course even if she wanted to. Though I guess American voters have a short memory.
They sometimes have no memory. We asked Elise Stefanik “not to lie” in 2017. She refused.
Ken in 2017 what lie did she tell?
#pos_tefanik was asked to take a no-lie pledge and refused
then she signed it and lied right after that.. numerous times
in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDK_YBtdYJo) she lied no less than 4
said she didn't know the intern
said the intern wasn't paid
said she was unaware
said her campaign was unaware of the tracking
said Cobb said one thing in public and another in private (in this interview that is what #pos_tefanik is doing
asked about ethics, changed the subject
watch her campaign liar alex deGRASSe shift and edge in.. they were caught
add to this the intern, preston, spied on minors. He lied about recording them,
look up maddie andresen... worked both for nrcc and #pos_tefanik
her lies stink and the stink like the #pos_ that she is

I think no matter what you think Preston, Ms. Cobb never spent that much
And she refuses to interact with her constituents in any forum that she cannot totally control.
Rep Elise has made her choice, repeatedly. Now we must make ours. She is a grifter and liar. She and her ilk must go.
Al, I like your one-liners. So, if she and her ilk must go, how do you plan on accomplishing this goal? Like most here, hope that the people who view her through a deferent lens have a sudden moment of insight and see her as they do?
Hope is not a strategy. We have to actively point out the lies and build a coalition of those willing to cross political lines.
The start would be for Democrats to find a good LOCAL candidate to run against her, not someone imported from elsewhere like all of Elise's other opponents except Cobb.

You’d like to think that there is still a morality for voters in the North Country. The people are for you until they aren’t.
You’re still asking what Stefanik stands for? Seriously? When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
I guess it is so unfathomable, I must have missed something.
With apologies to Maya Angelou.

I believe she is saying..
check that, I will say it
#pos_tefanik is a liar, you have reported on that numerous times.. though you don't say she is a liar
you just point out time after time what she is saying isn't true
when #pos_tefanik repeats likes that have been corrected.. that isn't 'not telling the truth' that is consciously lying
which doesn't even go into the lies of omission or the evil she does or using her position to destroy democracy
https://edwardlow.substack.com/p/the-rancid-nut-pos_tefanik
Scarier yet where does this train go?
that is the problem with #pos_tefanik. Normally you know where the train goes... you might not know where it stops.. but you know where it goes
#pos_tefanik is off the rails.. she, herself, doesn't know where she is going. hmpy trymp will push her further and further into his lies and corruption.
She now must go where he tells her, she has no autonomy
It is unfathomable, but here we are. And we are not alone.
Trump normalized hate.
Sadly it will take time to undo this
mess.
Perfect assessment of Elise.
Thanks for telling it like it is Ken. I only wish more could read about it and choose to believe it.
Scary all around.
#pos_stefanik knows what is right and wrong
and she knows how to profit off of wrong
can we take a moment and look at the failure of journalism
5) I know you are proud of the post-star, but I could go through most articles on the campaign and point out the things that are not journalism
https://edwardlow.substack.com/p/the-rancid-nut-pos_tefanik
You mean like CNN covering RFK Jr.'s shirtless push-ups? It never ceases to amaze me that our media reports the least important with the most coverage.
I've seen that clip a couple of places
the only real thought I have on it is
those are not complete pushups that he is demonstrating
but his theories on just about everything is complete bullmanure
that said. I totally agree with you
when #pos_tefanik hired a kid to lie and secretly record minors in NY21 my thought wasn't 'Cobb is lying about her stance on guns,' because it was consistent what she had said before'
to me the story was.. I don't know where abusing children becomes illegal, but if I found out #pos_tefanik was spying on my kids... I would want her in jail
That is exactly the point. They will do anything to win.
