I didn't realize that Schumer and Gillibrand voted in favor of the missile defense system. I'm beginning to believe in term limits.

If it brings jobs to NY. Both are big Fort Drum supporters.

One the prime requirements for a politician to get reelected is "bringing home the bacon".

That certainly would not be the first thing on my list, especially when it comes to national defense. How about do what is best for ALL Americans. I know, I'm very naïve.

Because ALL Americans don't vote for Elise, just North Country Republicans. When she becomes President (!) she'll do what is best for ALL Republicans.

It's how the system works.

So, Stefanik wants to put a target on the backs of northern NYers for her political well-being by putting a missile defense system here.

She cares about her constituents about as much as JD Vance cares about the ones he’s smeared and endangered In Springfield. As much as Trump cared about the ones he fed Covid disinformation and empty promises to.

Fort Drum, as a large concentration of military troops and equipment, already is.

Sedition Stefanik is interested in one thing only and that’s herself. The rhetoric concerning Fort Drum, missile defense systems, Austin and the Biden Administration is nothing more than an attempt to solidify votes in the western part of NY 21. I am sure Miss Harvard knows that what she proposes is not possible but continues anyway. This is just one more example of distortion . Those here in NY 21 who don’t pay attention to her antics perceive her words and deeds as plausible. They think that she is concerned with their welfare but that is far from the truth. Sadly, this is how she continues to get reelected.

I like the name, "Sedition Stefanik."

"Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country" seems so quaint, but exactly what we need right now. unfortunately, belegerence is the new starting point for far too many in our national discourse.

The amazing thing is that Fort Drum is no longer in NY-21. Such arrogance that she would think she knows more about missile defense systems than Lloyd Austin.

I’m confused. I thought CD 21 retained Fort Drum within its boundaries.

At this moment, yes. But the lines were -re-drawn in late February 2024. Beginning January 1, 2025, Ft Drum is no longer in NY-21.

I did not know that.

I stand corrected. The first change, issued by the court in February 2024, took Ft. Drum out of CD 21. The Governor and other Democrats rejected that map and put it back in. (One of the challenges of this election cycle has been finding the "right" map online, since it changed multiple times in late February.) The general consensus among Democrats is that, while there are many enlisted men and women on base, often they retain their voter status in their home districts. So while Stefanik claims Ft. Drum as her "base" (pardon the pun), there are very few voters. The real power, of course, comes from getting appropriations for the base through her committee assignments. This benefits the ancillary contractors that live around the base. Also realize that we picked up the military base in Rome with redistricting.

I, too, prefer heeding the positions and recommendation's of defense experts rather than those of opportunistic politicians.

Meg just finished Doris Kearns Goodwin’s recent book and was duly impressed. She couldn’t put it down. The parts she shared with me were captivating. The book is on the top of my stack of must reads.

Ken, as to your comment that people in the 60’s believed things would get better, but you’re not sure they feel that way today—I’m not an optimist because I’m not sure that things will turn out well. But neither am I pessimist because I’m not sure that things will turn out badly. But I am a person of hope. I live by the hope shared by Thomas Jefferson: that “truth shall prevail!” (This hope is beyond wishful thinking).

I always loved Doris Kern Goodwin and when she was almost destroyed in 2002 due to her plagiarism issue, I was sad. If it was today, I am sure it would not have been so bad since those issues tend to be swept under the rug or given a silly excuse now. Her husband was most interesting and had a deep appreciation for honesty in government having left the administration of LBJ. My most favorite interview that Doris gave once was her recollection of how Lady Bird talked about her knowledge of LBJ's numerous affairs. It was like she excepted them as normal, and you just do not get upset about them. She is an exceptional writer and look forward to reading her new book.

Another 5billion dollar military project with unproven merit doesn’t seem like a sound project. And wouldn’t it turn northern NY into a target?

Expand full comment

No, I don't think it would make it a target. These missiles are designed to shoot down the incoming missiles that are aimed at cities. Trying to blow up missiles silos in rural parts of the country probably not in the game plan.

Fort Drum already is.

FYI The island of Kauai, Hawaii also has a very sophisticated US Defense Missile System. So missiles will be detected before even reaching the California one.

I’m currently reading the excellent "The Power Broker" by Robert Caro, a detailed study of Robert Moses’ rise to power in NYS as an urban planner and public official. The following passage immediately brought to mind our Congresswomen Stefanik and her own transformation over the last decade:

“For once Bob Moses came into possession of power, it began to perform its harsh alchemy on his character, altering its contours, eating away at some traits, allowing others to enlarge. The potential for these changes had always been there, like a darker shadow on the edge of the bright gold of his idealism. With each small increase in the amount of power he possessed, the dark element in his nature had loomed larger, becoming prominent enough for sharp-eyed men to begin to notice it.”

What an apt description of our Congresswoman.

In her 8 year career, this lying traitor of the Republic has a whopping two, that's 2, bills signed by a President into law that she has sponsored. The first was signed 12/21/18 naming the Plattsburgh Post Office. The second was the Women's Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act, signed into law on 11/25/19. On one hand, she has more bills passed than Gym Jordan, who has had nothing signed into law since 2007. On the other, we in NY 21 have an employee paid $174,000 a year who has seriously underperformed as a law maker. She has co-sponsored many bills in order to bow at the waist for the work of others, but most of her bills die after introduction. A few passed the house. Her Canadian Snowbird Visa Act was introduced twice (!) and went nowhere, while others were house appointments, a few amendments and house resolutions. Overall she's 2/167, achieving a batting average of .012. Why was she placed as Conference Chair?

No wonder she needs to lie about Executive Branch grant monies that are awarded by federal agencies to the district - she doesnt measure up to the $1,044,000 we've paid her for these substandard efforts. Like JD Vance answers a question by asking a question, Elies pats herself on the back with grant money that she, in the majority of cases, voted against.

Her traitorous attempt to co-conspire in defrauding the US by throwing out valid state electors in the last Presidential election should have sealed the deal, yet there are those who have rebranded an insurrection as a peaceful transfer of power (that the former felon did not attend).

While I've seen a few old "Elise Backs The Blue" signs left over from 2019, she apparently has learned at least one lesson and no longer uses those in uniform as political props. Nonetheless, she remains mired deep in the conspiracies of Trump, Santos and legal defense fund mail fraud out of Mar a Lardo.

We deserve better. She deserves a prison cell

The irony is that the baby boomers who dreamed of modernizing America in the 1960s are now the core of MAGA fascism that wants to drag America back to the 1860s.
