Well, I agree that how he would answer those questions will tell us how subservient he would be to the MAGA ideology. I’d love to see if he would “promise” to have public forum with constituents. Now, where are the Democrats? Have they just written this off?
I dialed up your citation and looked at one of those televised interviews and Stec could not have been more obsequious in his reference to Stefanik. That's enough to put him in the dead letter file.
I would like to know if Dan will be open to debating the Dem. candidate...does he intend, as I think, for example Paula Collins would if nominated by the Dems, to hold open and non orchestrated (not pre screened questions) at public meetings before the special election?
Wait a minute Will...you've assumed that Dan Steck is a shoe-in? It's columns like yours that guarantee he's a shoe-in. WHAT ABOUT PAULA COLLINS???? She's incredibly qualified and spent the entire last "season" travelling our district, deciphering what our "needs" really are! The farmers in the 21St district are in for a BIG SURPRISE as tRump's idiocy begins to tear their businesses apart. She is capable of making a fresh alternative, but that will never happen when articles like yours "ASSUME" he'll be elected.
Happy New Year! I hope you and Bella has great holidays...
Are you asking who the 15 chairpeople are? Their names and contact information is available on the NYS Democrat Committee website. https://www.nydems.org/about/counties
Once the special election has been announced, If you’re in one the 15 counties in NY-21, I strongly encourage you to contact your county chair in support of Paula Collins.
I also think that the presumption is that a GOP candidate would win this seat. It is much more red than when Gillibrand and Murphy held the seat. But I don't presume Stec will be the nominee. If Stefanik or someone higher up decides to award the seat to some outsider that could force Stec out. Betty Little and Roy McDonald were both better local candidate ion 2014, but they brought Stefanik in from outside. Before that John Sweeney and Chris Gibson were brought in from outside. Local folks didn't get much consideration in past.
Good point. The district has served as a stepping stone for a number of candidates. It's too bad. There is untapped political talent in the region. The parties need to get their act together.
Is there? Certainly not on the Dem side. State Dems have largely abandoned any sort of party building in most of the Adirondacks and NNY. That's why there are hardly any Dems on town boards and county legislatures in most of the north country. There are hardly any even on the ballot most of the time. Because there is no "bench," so to speak, that is why most of Elise's opponents have been imported from elsewhere. And unsurprisingly, none of them made her even break a sweat. Of note, the one opponent of hers that was actually from here and had elected office experience here - Tedra Cobb - ran the closest against her.
Some background information. Greenwich has not one Republican on its School Board, Village Board or Town Council. The positions are filled with active, young and seasoned Democrats and No Official Party members. Washington County Dems changed its bylaws several years ago in order to support NOPs. Building coalitions is crucial. How did we get here, we hit bottom with some magas who, literally, created their own demise. Our party leadership is excellent and "building a bench."
Respectfully, I know you used to be the Dem supervisor of Greenwich. But you'll surely admit that Greenwich is an anomaly in Washington County.
There are a few such oases in the district that at least have real competition. But the exceptions tend to be so for a specific reason. Potsdam and Canton are college towns. Glens Falls and Plattsburgh are cities. Greenwich is becoming part of the expanding Capital District suburbs which is also making Saratoga County more purple.
But in most small towns in the district, there aren't even any Dems on the ballot most of the time, let alone elected. In the last two local election cycles, Since I moved to my current town, there have been two local election cycles - over two dozen local races. Only three have had a Democrat to run against a Republican.
There are 32 members of the Warren and Washington County boards of supervisors outside Glens Falls and I believe that there are only 2 Democrats. In the 90 towns of the Adirondacks, is there a single Democratic town supervisor outside of Keene?
This is why local Dems keep importing people from outside the district to run for the Congressional seat. No one has any name recognition outside their little town. It's also why I hope Billy Jones gets the nomination. He's a proven vote winner over a chunk of the district and really the only local on "the bench" with a remote chance of winning.
Yes....it has become an anomaly. I hate to admit it. I grew up here, my father's family is traced back 7 generations. My dad was a Rockefeller Rep. My mom an Albany County Democrat. G'wich has weathered it's ups and down economically. Covid has affected the housing market here tremendously. I have mixed feelings about it. I love seeing old houses brought back to life, but bemoan the cost of rentals. I hate seeing it become a Saratoga wannabe. I fully agree with you on Billy Jones for all the reasons mentioned in the comments about him.
I feel that Assemblyman Billy Jones is the only Democrat out there that could potentially make this a real race. He knows how to raise money. He is a proven vote winner in a conservative part of the district. And, unlike the candidates Dems have imported from elsewhere, he knows how to talk effectively with people who aren't college educated professionals. Making at least some inroads here is a key for anyone who wants to win the district.
You're right that unknown candidates are caught in a publicity Catch-22. You get ignored by the media if no one knows who you are, but it's hard to get people to know who you are when the media ignores you.
Just a note for people asking where the democrats are...Paula Collins announced her candidacy several weeks ago, and our local press has given her NOTHING in exposure. Our 21st District is considered deeply red by the DNC, and now that they have been beaten so soundly, perhaps they'll be ready to send some money Paula's way. An email to the DNC would go a long way to help this to happen. Thank you...
At the time Collins said she was running again she was referring to the 2026 campaign. The obvious is there was no 2025 NY-21 race until Stefanik was nominated to be the UN Ambassador.
The county committees for both parties in NY-21 need to select a candidate to be on the ballot for their party. Until that is done, it’s not known if it will be a Stec vs Collins race.
Of course if state or national officials step in they are often under pressure to toe the line. Case in point, Matt Doheney and her squared off in a primary that STefanik ultimately won. Doheney could have stayed on the ballot, but he was suddenly notimated to be a judge and abandoned his candidacy.
Until Stefanik actually resigns, there is no campaign, no election. As usual, Elise is doing things to benefit herself. She holds us all captive while she does the political equivalent of having her cake and eating it. The are several candidates who've expressed interest in the Dem nomination, including both Paula Collins and Blake Gendebien (https://blakegendebienforcongress.com/). There's also been talk about a meet the candidates event, at least up here in St. Lawrence Co. We can't expect the DNC to save us. We need to work harder to save ourselves.
The photo of Dan in crisp, never worn in public, MAGA t-shirt and Red Hat, standing in the hallway next to the closet he just seems to have come out of, with nobody except the person taking the picture, does not bode well for him. Perhaps there are pictures of him among large crowds wearing that stuff. I don’t know, I don’t think of him much, and I suspect voters in the district, on average, think less about him than I do.
We need to know which side is he on in the civil war: Team MAGA or Team DOGE.
Spare me ever having billions of dollars if it means fighting with other horrible people on the antisocial media platform you own, on Christmas.
That’s what Dan Stec is cosplaying to be part of and the expression on his face suggests he’s down for it. Attendance at the January 6 attack would’ve burnished his cred a little, tho.
It will be interesting to see how the GOP Civil War will play out in terms of voter turnout in a special election in northern N.Y. state in several months. That may be more decisive than any particular issue.
Let's not assume he will win the seat. It's rather obvious he will be the Rep (Maga) choice. The Democrats are NOT just sitting on this. My question would be, " Why does it appear that those in power are more concerned with regulating women's bodies than guns. Where do you stand on a woman's right to choose and regulated gun ownership!" and "Can you explain your rationale behind using the 2nd amendment to support unregulated gun ownership that is killing our children and others?"
I'd like to see a Dem in that office. That said, I'm hoping for a House Representative who is committed to working for their constituency rather than one whose ego demands attention. There's an abundance of that these days.
Stec is a shoe- in here in 21. That's not opinion....he's been raised here, has significant ties to this community. His affiliation with the good old boys here is cemented. He's been groomed by Stefanik for years.
It isn't these columns that get Republicans elected ! It is the FACT that upstate is controlled by the good old boy *patriots*. It is the FACT that unfortunately, the Dems have failed to produce a candidate that could stand up to Stefanik.
It's also a FACT that everyone thought Cobb could be the *one*. Not me, she couldn't answer the one question I asked which required a yes or no answer . (It pertained to Universal Healthcare )
I honestly thought Castelli could be the *one* but he failed also.
Collins put criminals on a pedestal and praised them. She said even bad attention is a good thing.
Well, not for me. You can't put lipstick on a pig and the men she defended are criminals. Not heroes.
Stec is MAGA. 100 %.
So, you need to find a STRONG Democrat who can take these guys on.
It's no one's fault that we live where we live and ultra conservatism thrives. We can only keep fighting .
Warren county is a very small portion of the district. Because Jerry Solomon lived here and represented us for so long we feel like we are the center of political power and energy in the region. We are not. Mr Stec must first convince 15 chairs to choose him. I’m not certain he will win that.
Don’t construe my comments to be in any way “faith in the system.” It’s just the system, and I’m not sure I could come up with a better system to replace a newly elected representative in a short period of time.
I think there is a good chance that we (and the nation) would be better served by allowing the seat to remain empty for the next 2 years. The odds that we will flip the seat to Democratic are low. Not zero. There is a real chance in a special election in which Republicans are internally divided that a Democrat could win IF Democrats turn out in high numbers. The reality is that those voters tend not to show up except in Presidential election years and in recent Presidential years Trump voters have exceeded typical turnout.
Engagement is everything, and to be honest, people on the Democratic side of the equation constantly snipe at our own candidates - who are almost always better than the alternative they are running against.
People often criticize me for being “negative” about our chances. I’m not. But I recognize the numerical advantages of the Republicans, and while I am perennially optimistic that given the right circumstances, and given the chance for those who are not very conservative to stop nitpicking, pull together, and SHOW UP TO VOTE we can win big elections.
Every once in a while we pull out a big win! But I am well versed in election night disappointment. And yet, I fucking show up to vote every single time. And I knock at people’s doors and often they tell me that they “always” vote even though I’m working off a list of people who only show up to vote in presidential election and maybe congressional as well. And I thank them for being voters and I plead with them to get out to vote in the coming election - because it is important! I know most of those people won’t.
But if we can turn maybe just 5% of them we have a chance.
And I also get shit from candidates who don’t like it when I tell the truth about the reality of our situation, as if having some Pollyanna message is going to engage voters to turn out.
All I can do is try to be real.
But let me end with the positive message. Even though we don’t win as often as we should, Democrats outperform Republicans at the polls in most elections. We make up maybe 27% or so of the electorate but we often deliver 13-15% more votes than our registration. Sometimes we come close to 50% and every once in a while we win.
Republicans UNDERPERFORM (comparatively) in virtually every election. It’s just the numbers are stacked better for them.
I would say part of the problem is democrats are not robots. and they are public
Anthony Constantino and Otto Miller are running for the gQp..
I predict you won't hear much, and then find out those two were somehow dissuaded (never given a chance).
pos_tfnKKK often had competition, good competition in that they didn't lie, they were interested in the people of ny21 and they didn't kowtow to special interests, corporate money and greed (i.e. the opposite of pos_tfnKK)
those people were abandoned by the gQp and push to the side...
dam deckstec has already started his campaign of lies.
I wish I knew why democrats didn't show up.. I wish I knew why democrats are okay with losing rights and don't care that rapist, felons get elected
If we are to have a real sense of State Senator Stec’s set of values, I think asking him detailed questions on his support for LGBTQ rights is critical.
His assertion about already representing most of the district in the state senate is weak. He represents people in Warren, Essex, Clinton, Franklin, a sliver of Washington, and part of St Lawrence counties. And the portion of St Lawrence county is only after the ‘22 redistricting maps. That leaves large swathes of NY21 that he has not represented, northern Saratoga, southern Washington, Montgomery, Schoharie, parts of Lewis and St Lawrence, Hamilton, Herkimer, part of Oneida and Jefferson, Fulton…did I miss anything?
The thing is, Dan doesn’t have to convince voters to pick him in a primary. He has to convince 15 very specific voters, the county chairs in NY21. And I expect the $2.6 million the Sticker Mule guy is bringing to the table will hold a lot more sway than anything Mr Stec has to say.
Dan Stec is a worthless irrelevant grifter. He has sucked off the taxpayers his entire life while accomplishing nothing more than lining his pockets. Stec would be fired from any job with his dismal record. Stec is a poster boy for term limits. Arrogant, narcissistic, bombastic, etc. I'm sick of folks continuing to go soft on these political hacks.

Well, I agree that how he would answer those questions will tell us how subservient he would be to the MAGA ideology. I’d love to see if he would “promise” to have public forum with constituents. Now, where are the Democrats? Have they just written this off?
There are several Democrats interested in running. Unfortunately, we now live in a news desert and we aren’t getting a lot of stories about them.
a news desert, yet

I’ve been getting emails from a Blake Gendebien a dairy farmer who’s fundraising (and splitting the money with some PAC). Doesn’t seem promising.
You deserve greater readership. Thank you for your fine and reasoned writing.

Paula Collins is an excellent and viable candidate. She is intelligent, well informed on the needs of the district, approachable and available.
Well, Paula Collins said she was running again and her new campaign would start the day after election, so not sure what the news is there.
At the time Collins said she was running again she was referring to the 2026 campaign. The obvious is there was no 2025 NY-21 race until Stefanik was nominated to be the UN Ambassador.
Paula Collins ran a respectable race against stefanik, I'd give her a chance. Stec has local recognition and some baggage.
The county committees for both parties in NY-21 need to select a candidate to be on the ballot for their party. Until that is done, it’s not known if it will be a Stec vs Collins race.

Yes. If anything is happening now, and I bet it is, it's behind the scenes as candidates try to line up county committee endorsements.

Exactly. And the national GOP. And Stefanik/
My observation is, like Stefanik, Stec is careful and will see which way the wind is blowing.
That photo says enough about which wind he is following.
Good questions, Will! Can we add: “Do you promise not to lie to us?”?
Another good question. I think challenging questions are the *best.*
We know how that turned out last time? Voters did not care.

Maybe we should pressure those committee heads?
You should give feedback to your county chair!
A question for Stec: How do you plan to represent those in your district who did not vote for you?
Dan Stec is a worthless irrelevant grifter. He has sucked off the taxpayers his entire life while accomplishing nothing more than lining his pockets. Stec would be fired from any job with his dismal record. Stec is a poster boy for term limits. Arrogant, narcissistic, bombastic, etc. I'm sick of folks continuing to go soft on these political hacks.
Agreed.
Well said.
Like your Republican “manifesto.” Apropos for any sincere politician in America. Pic is scary.
Stec’s photo say it all. Same old MAGA shit as Stefanik. 🤬
Agreed. He also began talking the same way she did about anyone not Republican. Despicable.
