After a career in law enforcement, I can relate to how a change in facility conditions can make an officer's job easier, but there are some security basics that always apply regardless of age. An important one is area for containment and processing detainees. Sparse rooms for holding are critical in that they are bare, with nothing that can be used to free one's self, or as a weapon against officers or other detainees. It also needs to prevent absconding. It should be in the vicinity of where fingerprints and photos are done to limit the distance needed to move, as some people are less than helpful when it comes to cooperation. The leg shackles in the photo try to make up for a ring which was misplaced when installed. It's clumsy and potentially dangerous at that level. Initially stark, bare conditions are surprising, but from an officer safety standpoint there is less you have to be concerned with, other than whoever you are working with at the time. Look at it more as a hitching post than a dungeon; it isn't meant for continuous occupancy. A question arising from this is what were you doing there, and were you Mirandized? : )
I feel that the gentleman on the Luzerne Library board has his priorities in the wrong place. Unfortunately, his kind are vocal and loud and get attention of others who think like them. I hope that most people are more sensible and realize that exposing kids to different lifestyles doesn’t lead the children into that lifestyle.
The drag queen saga is just another example of the *Christian * community trying to demonize anything they deem to not be *normal*. (White cisgender people)
As for the police department, a better idea would be for them to start paying attention to the huge coke/crack problem in GF. They are very aware yet nothing seems to be happening.
Fundamentalist religiosity (in this case Christian) is inherently incompatible with our system of government - which is why the founders provided for separation of church and state while at the same time allowing for free exercise of religion. Our government is instituted among the People deriving “just powers” from consent of the governed. It is incumbent for we (the governed) to provide consent for individuals who are among the governed to live unconstrained by the biases of others. That is the original intent of the founders. But the whole point of fundamentalist ideas is to allow certain people or groups to feel entitled to special treatment.
This is a superb article. I went to City Hall to view Dr. Toubas paintings this week. First of all, there are so many steps for handicapped people, the doors need painting, you have to go down STAIRS to the police station to use a restroom. I’m with you. Our police and citizens deserve better!
Totally agree Police Department and better support of the building in general is warranted! Let’s do something about this; it is totally ridiculous! Suggestions please on a comprehensive plan to get this done!
Idea: The Luzerne Library should host a series of the greatest movies ever. "Some Like it Hot" is widely considered to be the funniest movie of all time. What do you think?
Police have always been at the bottom of the funding pecking order pretty much across the spectrum of agencies. There are some exceptions, but for the most part. The agency I worked for required officers to create an office in their home, on their dime.
As far as the drag show bruha, I have just always been curious why it is always fairly young children that are targeted. Why are the libraries not booking them to read to senior citizens or one of the book clubs. Why not the Rotary or the local Sportsmens Club? The historical society or one of OFA’s pop-up luncheons. Not a real big deal, apart from the rather minor public funds issue. If you do not want your kids spending time with men dressed as female prostitutes, keep them home that night and read to them yourself. No biggie.

I agree that is like a dungeon down there.

I have been in that room with my nephew when he had to file a complaint. I agree 100% with your description of it!

Thank you for letting us know about this. How do we let the residents of Glens Falls know so they can bring change?
Can I copy and past your comments on my personal page?
Sure
