Let’s lock the lot of them up. After we vote them out.

Why don’t we all pitch in and put a huge ad in the Post Star stating that her ad was a lie and list everything you wrote that is the truth?

We the People!

Expand full comment

I would chip in for that ad!

Expand full comment

Ken would you be able to submit this ad if we all contributed? I’m not sure how much it would even cost these days but I think quite a few responsible citizens would gladly contribute. If they need names, I’d have no problem with that or we could go with “we the people!”😁

I'm guessing an ad like this would be over $1000.

I'll gladly contribute

We need one in the Chronicle, as well.

Great idea! I will ask about their fees.

It’s too bad the FTC won’t file suit against Lee Enterprises for using their ownership of the Post Star to perpetuate E-lies’ lies…

Over the past year they’ve published full page Bradford Exchange colored ads for a Trump Train, a Trump Christmas Tree, and most recently a statue of Herr Trump’s image. Not-so-subtle support for their preferred convicted felon candidate.

This month’s Lee Enterprises billing statements -for our 3 day a week newspaper delivery/daily online digital issue - is up to $579.00!!! That’s a $100 increase from last October. In driving down to the Lawrence St. office, their staff was successful in reducing my annual fee to $474.00 for over 3 years.

My 97 yr. neighbor does not have a computer, no digital Post Star. Her annual subscription statement is also for $579.00! When she finally reached a live person at the 877- 589-5944 # a thickly accented woman seemed unable/unwilling to negotiate a lower price till my neighbor said she would have to cancel her subscription. The fee came down by $100. But my elder neighbor was reluctant to give her credit card info to an unknown person.

I will try to navigate the local 518-792-3131 # and menu listings today to seek a live person to advocate for her and myself. Trying to access the new Post Star office inside the Glen/Washington St. Travelers building might require a security clearance higher than my citizen status.

Expand full comment

We just canceled our paper version of the Post Star! The price is just too high and the quality of the content is poor.

Thinking of cancelling the whole subscription.

Expand full comment

Sadly, the best way to get a better price is to cancel the subscription. In a few weeks, they usually try to get you back at a more reasonable rate. The sad part is that many people realize there are other options in the meantime and don't go back at all.

As far as Lee Enterprises' politics, I never experienced this. It is more about anyone willing to pay for the ad can get it in the newspaper. It's all about the money.

Thank you for your honest reporting on Stefanik. She does not really care for the people in her district and her brand of absentee politics is truly shameful.

Expand full comment

If, in fact, Stefanik’s home was gerrymandered out of the district and she has not moved into the district where is she registered to vote?

Expand full comment

I suspect she is in Tonko's district.

Expand full comment

If that is the case she is not our Representative, should not be seated in Congress, should not be seated in Congressional hearings, and should have her pay rescinded.

After a census gerrymander sitting Reps are allowed to remain in their seats but I always thought there was some sort of time limit to moving into their district. Maybe there isn’t. Maybe everyone assumed a Representative would just do it.

Any lawyers out there with insight?

The rule is that anyone can live anywhere in NY State and run for Congress in any NY congressional district. One is not required to live in district. The joke is that she has raised this "carpetbagger" issue with me, Castelli, and I think Aaron Wolf. Each of us live in the district.

Expand full comment

You are correct. Her only legal requirement is to reside in NYS. Ironically during her first run, both she and Aaron Wolf had registered about a year before running to homes in the district. Aaron actually owned his home and used it for years although prior his registered address was in Brooklyn. She lived in DC and registered to her parents vacation home in Essex County, but locals had no idea who she was nor had ever seen her. Aaron was a well known entity. For those who paid attention, Owens sudden resignation took everyone by surprise even his own staff (who got a call about an hour before the announcement). Doheny had lost to Owens the prior election and decided not to run again so REPs in DC tossed this former Bush White House intern (to Rove no less) in to the mix. Karl Rove trained, their team quickly branded Woolf as "Brooklyn's Upstate Congressman" and it stuck. I was Deputy Town Supervisor/Town councilman in Hartford NY when Doheny (REP from Alexandria Bay) jumped back in to the race and came for a visit to get endorsement from Hartford REP Town Supervisor and hoped me, too. I told him I was DEM and town DEM committee chair, so no vote from me but I hoped he would beat Elise. He was adamant that IF he lost REP primary, he would run on his other line. Stefanik said the same thing. He lost primary. BUT THEN THE STRANGEST THING HAPPENED! The only way you can get off the ballot once you are on it is, 1) die, 2) become a convicted felon, or 3) run for a different office. And VOILA! All of a sudden, the St. Lawrence County boy from Alexandria Bay was on the ballot in Brooklyn running for a Judgeship and not on ballot anymore against Stefanik? Now how could that have happened? LOL. Karl Rove IMO was the master of the universe of political dirty tricks.

Very good history lesson.

Expand full comment

That same issue has come up in Congress several times, I believe. And THOSE "representatives" lived in a different STATE! But thats ok I guess.

There's something that needs investigation - unlike some of the ones currently!

Expand full comment

Yes, you can run for office while not living in the district - but can you legally serve in Congress if you don’t at a minimum register to vote within the district after you win?

Clearly Stefanik has served for years as NY21 rep without actually living here but she previously pretended to be a resident. Has she dispensed with the pretense? And is that legal?

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, yes, it is legal. It’s just bad form, especially when she nips at opponents for their residency status.

If ya spot it, ya got it.

Good questions.

The US Constitution only specifies that they Representatives can be no more numerous than one per 30,000 residents (today's typical district has more than 500,000), each state is entitled to at least one, and that they must be residents of the state where elected. It doesn't specify the maximum size of the House or even require any districting of a state's delegation (they could all be elected at-large as in single-district states).

Expand full comment

I saw a story from 2022 where she said that she would move into the district. But they still identify her as being from Schuylerville.

I’ve been told they own a home on Hanehan Road in Schuylerville. Tax records out there?

State legislative seats are governed by different rules entirely, and legislators DO have to reside in their districts. By the federal Baker v. Carr decision in the 1960's, both lower and upper houses must be apportioned based on population, no "little federal" arrangements allowed. Some other states do things differently; in New Jersey their Assembly and Senate districts are coterminous and each district chooses one senator and two assembly representatives.

She has a much better rep than I do.

Expand full comment

Carrie Woerner is the exact opposite of Elise Stefanik. Carrie is one of the most accessible members of the Assembly. She is at every event, ready to listen and to help her constituents. She works hard everyday and never takes her position for granted. The difference is that Carrie is a helper and truly cares for her district and Elise is none of these things. Elise is a selfish opportunist who's only goal is power.

Expand full comment

That seems to sum things up accurately.

Expand full comment

So true!

Expand full comment

Elise is smart enough to know that she needs to run against her own policies. Since when are republicans supporting Medicare? Elise is also smart enough to know that most voters really don't pay attention to anything other than the mudslinging, pro wrestling is a billion dollar industry and yet you can almost always find a parking space in the library parking lot. Being good at getting elected does not equate to being good a governing. The arrogance on display by Elise keeps breaking new ground. And unfortunately , she'll most likely win in a landslide.

Expand full comment

“Being good at getting elected does not equate to being good at governing.” — This is a major part of what’s gone wrong with politics in our country!

Expand full comment

I would love to disavow you of the thought that "she'll most likely win in a landslide." That only becomes true if people perpetuate that sentiment.

Please tell 5 other people, who tell 5 other people, who then tell another 5 people: Paula Collins is the Democrat running against Stefanik.

I'm a bit concerned, Stefanik being the highest-ranking GOP woman in the House, that she has only presented Vance and Trump with one offspring. Surely she is disappointing them with her lack of providing workers for the next generation. Chop chop, Eli$e. You and Matthew haven't even completed the replacement offspring. Such disappointment in our GOP lady, wasting her lady parts to raise GOP money.

It doesn’t seem to bother our elected officials that she is no where to be seen and will not run a real election. The Town Supervisors, Board members and others continue to endorse her. I have heard that if they don’t endorse her they will not receive funds for their town/county. But is this really true? And has it been the way of politics in NY 21 whether it is a Republican or Democrat running?

As for Paula Collins, I sincerely hope she views this election as her warm up...she has to be around for a while before she can make a dent in the district.

Unfortunately, the key is raising money these days. That's what makes Stefanik so formidable. She has a lot of money.

Expand full comment

True. She is formidable. But she is not un-beatable. Stefanik signs are not as prominant this year; they look old and re-used from prior years. It doesn't cost a dime for each Dem to tell 5 other Dems about Stefanik's opponent. Unfortunately the fundraising efforts in a few key NY-21 counties were thwarted by messaging that this race is un-winnable. The collateral consequence of that kind of messaging makes it tough to ask donors for dollars, which is why I really like for supportive Dems to keep that line of thinking as a "quiet thought" (as I used to say as a classroom teacher).Focus on the disparity in funding also makes it tough to get volunteers. Who wants to spend a second on a campaign that others have called "unwinnable"?

And almost all of her money comes from out of state.

Elise Stefanik takes the North Country vote for granted because she knows she can. The solace in her returning to Congress is that she’s likely to be in the minority where all she can do is be part of a loud, whiny, unhinged group of put upon victims like their leader.

The Republican Party is on its way to joining the Whigs and the Know Nothings in the dustbin. It’s ironic that Liz Cheney joined Kamala Harris yesterday at the birthplace of the GOP. A coalition party has formed to oppose the nihilism of the MAGA Party that Trump and Stefanik represent.

What’s left is people like Stefanik with no principles, morals or honor. It’s a race to the bottom.
