I couldn't agree with you more. I've worked in the newspaper industry for over 30 years now. I'm not elite in any way. I'd be happy to finance a copy of your book to send to Ungar-Sargon, Bruni and Mahar. Local journalists aren't in it for the money or fame. (The thought of both almost make me laugh out loud) You need to believe in the First Amendment to stay in this industry for the long haul!

What a great idea. Maybe we could start a fund to finance 10 copies for each of them to give to their “elite and affluent” friends.

"Blais is requesting that local businesses chip in to house 75 hotel rooms for students. // In the past, up to 1,500 international workers would come to Lake George to work."

This seems like a rather modest request, one that local hospitality businesses could easily support.

This does, though, leave me with several questions. What does the local hospitality industry do now to support the international workers regarding housing and other assistance? How many of the 1,500 (young) workers are left to fend for themselves? Why do businesses leave it to the village (i.e. "government") to coordinate a modest support effort, instead of taking the lead itself? Wouldn't this be a worthwhile project for the Chamber of Commerce?

One lesson from the Covid-19 pandemic is the value that employees add to businesses, and the degree to which businesses depend on their employees. I recall numerous news articles quoting business owners about the difficulties of operating without enough workers. One would think business would take the lead on ensuring they have enough human resources available, and work cooperatively together to make it happen.

I think you are right that the students were often left to fend for themselves and were taken advantage of. After some Post-Star stories, the student connection was formed to help give an advocate for students. It helped, but I imagine it has lost steam. Blais and the rest of the tourist community needs to get behind it again.

What’s her name’s theory is not only wrong but insulting to those of us who spent careers pruning the grape vines, while she sneaked sips of the wine. I almost joined the “elite” at the NY Herald-Tribune, but the owners shut down the paper before I could report for work. Thus started a career of weeklies, wire services and freelance. A lot of fun, but no riches.

Like so many of us.

Am saddened by the fact that she was so well educated & to say such a thing and extremely disappointed with Bruni because the NYT usually gets it right in my book.
