I was thinking about this.. just before I read Mr. Sutherland's post.
The substack is a great place for discussion, for posting essays like yours... but the pay model might need to be re-thought.
I wonder how long a newspaper would last have lasted back in the day, if you got only the articles you wanted delivered.
That is... I would gladly pay a general amount (maybe not a really high amount), if I was paid for all of substack, instead of thinking if I should support each of the five that I follow regularly and the 100's that I have read over the year.
Thats certainly true - if anyone has ever watched his folksy "demeanor" during hearings - it makes clear he not only has been there too long but I have to wonder exactly why his constituents believe hes qualified to be there! He certainly plays the part of an absolute jerk!
Yeah - also per wikipedia - he went to Vanderbuilt University, University of Va AND Oxford University, which kind of makes his pretense a bit ridiculous.
Not sure if you can educate some... just saying that often triggers them.
If you go look at pos_tfnKKK's face book page, you will see two things about her supporters:
ºº facts don't seem to matter
ºº one of their biggest fears is someone will educate, or re-educate, or deprogram them
They fear that really badly
And if you look at the election of hmpy trmPEDO.. 70+ million likely KNEW he was a rapist, knew he had been impeached twice (once for colluding with russia and once for starting an insurrection).
Now you can say: they weren't smart enough. Or they weren't mentally capable enough
or just mentally ill.. but it isn't so easy they didn't know the facts.
Despicable blow-hard Kennedy, like Trump, has used tragedies as photo-ops for getting press coverage for himself for many years. That live press conference New Year’s morning, just hours after the killings, was being as effectively and sensitively managed as possible by senior city police officers and other local/state/federal agents who had personally witnessed the bodies of dead and wounded… and were doing their best to control their own emotions. They were each trying to provide the most factual information, at that hour, to further protect their citizens/visitors in real time.
Kennedy’s body language, and obvious impatience in waiting his “turn,” was a disturbing distraction. His size alone, swiveling back and forth, with his sneering facial expressions suggested he was there to orate… not to comfort his state constituents. Once he started opining his conspiracy accusations, the other officials could hardly contain their facial reactions to Kennedy’s blatant disregard for the security of their critical early investigation…and the ethical issue of preventing further trauma to family members and friends of the deceased and seriously wounded.
In a previously functional Senate, Senator Kennedy would be immediately censured with massive GOP/DEM outcry. Instead, his cowardly sociopathic co-conspirators in the Senate and House are wrapped up in the Musk-Trump-Bannon mandate for perpetuating chaos to further undermine the frail remnants of our democracy this morning…and in the days ahead.
I am praying for all the people of New Orleans, and may we each pray for peace within our families, friendships and communities…today…tomorrow… and all the days ahead 🙏
I lived through that eerie silence in New York City after the 9/11 attacks. The normally lively pace of walkers was drastically slowed by the shock and the enormity of the horror. Some streets became holding stations for giant military equipment. City life is exciting, stimulating and unavoidably stressful on a good day, but when tragedy strikes you realize your fragility. Thanks for sharing your experience in NOLA. It brought home the sobering, historic events too many of us have lived through. I am often thinking of the millions of humans now affected by war and terror right now and it always reminds me of the comforts and freedoms we often take for granted. We can't afford to take anything for granted, can we?
Do we ever know what republicans are talking about.. I responded to a post on pos_tfnKKK's to a democrat who was talking to a gQped.. I will list it below.
Mr. Tingley, I hope you don't mind unsolicited advice.... I fear you, what I fear for myself if I had access to the best restaurants in the world: watch your weight and exercise.
========
serious question (because I feel the same.. I would love to see one republican have a thoughtful conversation)... Have you seen anyone with a well-thought-out comment?
I have not.. and I don't expect posters to, but It would be nice if the person who is supposed to be representing ny21, could explain her thinking..
To explain why she votes the way she does (seemingly what would be best for the people who live in her district*)
It would be nice if she would have talked about how maybe now that she has a child, she has to think about school shootings at a personal level and why she still didn't do anything.. I could respect her if she did that.
I don't expect that from her supporters, but they have kids and they have grand kids, but it is clear.. they don't care about their kids.. or that is how it seems
* I once called the stefanik office and told the office manager that the way she was going to vote would hurt at least 30% of the children in the district and the response was basically she didn't care.
Thank you for your observations of feeling safe in New Orleans. I feel somewhat safe in Seattle after retiring here as a single woman during the day. When I am out downtown at night at a show or an event I am usually with my daughter. Waiting at the bus stop can be sketchy at night but so far, I have been ok. We have had a few shootings, and the bus company Metro has stopped picking up and dropping off in parts of the international district which makes it hard for the folks that live and work there. We just had a bus driver killed in the University District by a passenger at 3 am, the first time in 26 years. Seattle was a city that the defund the police movement was big, and we are on our 3rd police chief since the 2020 summer of love where a part of the city was taken over and the police were kept out for a while. We are still down 30% of our police and there are hopes that the new chief appointed last week from Madison, Wisconsin has what it takes to bring back the police here since most young cops quit. The difference I would point out is you are a tall man who looks in good shape and it is one thing for you to feel safe in a city with high crime statistics versus a woman being alone walking home in the same city. I understand statistics as well and my years working for domestic violence and rape crisis, I know that those crimes are underreported in general. I will agree with you that living in an urban city after living in Glens Falls is a very different experience. I have studied and spoke a lot about aging in place and as a senior who does not have a car here and lives in a building with an elevator it is a perfect place to retire to and to age in place. I live in a neighborhood of Seattle that is about the size of Glens Falls as far as sq ft, since neighborhoods like mine see themselves as towns inside of the large City of Seattle. We are called Wallingford, but we still belong to the mothership of the City of Seattle. I have gotten used to the sirens and noise and for some reason it can feel secure living alone in such a large space with many people who are strangers. The best part for me like you, I am close to my daughter, and I too get to keep an eye on her and she says to keep an eye on me.
Every time there is a mass shooting in this country the Onion re-publishes a piece “No way to prevent this,” Says Only Nation where This Regularly Happens.
I have my own tradition of reminding skeptical people that for the first half of my life Afghanistan worked very hard to be more like the US, and the second half of my life the US has worked very hard to be like Afghanistan.
My son worked in Afghanistan for many years. In order to stay safe, aside from his company having a safety officer who followed and communicated threat warnings from various governments and NGO’s, he followed his own policy of trying, as much as possible, to avoid being in the places where unpredictable random violence is most likely to happen.
I think Americans need to adjust their expectation that because we think of America as among the safer places in the world, random violence will not touch us. We are, and have been, fairly safe because our various police agencies have been escalating their awareness and countermeasures for violent acts for a long time, but over the last couple of decades far more very dangerous weapons have gotten into the hands of neighbors, many of whom should probably not be trusted with a Turkey fryer, and the cultural taboo’s against attempts at mass violence have steadily waned - largely through concerted efforts by various groups openly working to divide us.
I just joined your list of "subscribers" and I am so glad that I did.....
Glad to have you on board. Share with your friends.

We really need to do a better job "educating" people so that politicians such as Kennedy don't get re-elected.....
Thats certainly true - if anyone has ever watched his folksy "demeanor" during hearings - it makes clear he not only has been there too long but I have to wonder exactly why his constituents believe hes qualified to be there! He certainly plays the part of an absolute jerk!
It is a folksy accent he didn't have before.. he emphasizes it now
Yeah - also per wikipedia - he went to Vanderbuilt University, University of Va AND Oxford University, which kind of makes his pretense a bit ridiculous.
Yeah.. I was just watching a facebook video where a guy was saying that.
It reminds me of a segment on the Pod Save America podcast where they said: "The problem with pos_tfnKKK is she is smart, she is educated.
SHE KNOWS BETTER."
sad that both kennedy and pos_tfnKKK use knowledge and their intelligences to manipulated the fearful and not so bright gQpeds.
Not sure if you can educate some... just saying that often triggers them.

Beautifully, powerfully expressed. Thank you Susan!
You said it so much better than I did, Susan!

Thanks for your sensitivity, Bea. Yes, human life IS fragile, and ought not to be taken for granted. So too our freedoms, as you rightly note. Shalom!
Shalom and L'Chaim
Stay safe and Be Well
Onward!
Kennedy spent more time adjusting his hair during press conference then anything else!
