Like a gang leader or mob boss, our previous president is extremely skilled in manipulating others. He isn't very bright but he sure can lie and get others to do what he wants them to do. This hearing needs to be televised. There are many that will refuse to watch and for those closed minded minions, there is no hope. But that is the best way for the truth to be exposed here. This certainly impacts history more than OJ did and I am hopeful Roberts realizes that or at least is pressured enough to acknowledge that.

I agree that it should be televised, but if that decision is left up to Justice Robert, it probably won’t be. He doesn’t seem to care for transparency.

So true.

I still worry that he will be reelected. There seems to be so many people that can't comprehend all that has happened. I found him horrifying the first time and think he would be even worse trying to get back at people.

Expand full comment

That may be the only reason he is running again.

He’ll wiggle out of it, just like everything else. And many moderates might stay home on Election Day because Biden is such a lousy pol.

I kind of disagree about Biden. I think his boring old-fashioned style is just what the country needed after Trump. I think Act 2 will give even more people pause. I don’t know how you run for president while attending your various trials.

Expand full comment

Biden is even older and more disoriented now. Moderates will hear the dirt from both sides and not rally for either. Wish we had real choices.

I would have to say that you cannot argue with results, and Biden has achieved some excellent results. Do not dismiss a leader simply because they are older. We are all older than we were last year. Most are also wiser.

I see things through the eyes of an average person. I am not a partisan either way. Looking at Biden from my “middle of the road” perspective, he seems like he really isn’t in charge and has handlers deciding things. Inflation is really high. Covid restrictions were too strict and killed small businesses. He’s not great by any stretch. Better than Trump, but not inspiring. People will stay on their sofas on Election Day.

Expand full comment

Keep in mind Covid started under Trump (who wanted to ignore it) and there were a lot of unknowns. Inflation has continued to drop in recent months, too while economy is percolating along despite predictions of a recession. It could be a lot worse.

Those of us who care about our democracy will definitely not stay on their sofa on Election Day. In fact, some of us will be working as poll workers.

Great but I think it’s not a bad thing to acknowledge that you could do better than Biden. It’s a fair statement.

He is older, not as sharp as he once was, but he knows how to legislate and he has shown that over the past three years.

Thank you, Ken, for your excellent summary of yesterday’s indictment. And for your ongoing perspective on the evolution of evil perpetrated by Herr Trump, Frau Elise, and all the countless, soul-less foot soldiers who continue to follow the path of least resistance. I only wish today’s column could have wider distribution. I’ll be sending it to out-of-state family and friends.

Spot on Ken.

I want to publicly thank Liz Cheney.

I want to laugh out loud at the fool who told me Trump was going to be the greatest President in the history of the USA.

Elise Stefanik is a disgrace and is supported by persons who preach racial purity and hate.

I agree. Elise Stefanik is a disgrace.

Excellent summary of the horrors of trump.

I am so nervous that he will be re elected. I wish both parties would take voters concerns into consideration and nominate younger candidates. My ideal candidate would be mid 50’s, with some governing experience such as a Governor or Senator, international expertise and middle of the road policies( able to understand and consider both sides). I could easily vote for someone like that regardless of party. Do they exist?

Sounds like Obama.

Yep, I did think of him when I was writing.😊

I turned 42 on July 25th. However, I'm an unabashed leftist. My way of reaching out to the other side is promoting economic policies that will help lift them up as well. I have a hard time not rolling my eyes at the wedge issues that the rich use to keep the poor voting against their economic interests.

If you believe in equal rights for all, then it's easy to be pro LGBTQ rights. If you believe in equal rights for all, then it's easy to be pro bodily autonomy for women to make their own choices for healthcare. If you believe in equal rights for all, then it's easy to be pro universal health care that includes vision and dental. I think that there's tons of Republicans here in NY-21 that can either get behind these policies or at least see where the logic is in them.

If you believe in equal rights for all…Ah, therein lies the rub!

Right on cue Stefanik issued her "Biden's weaponization DOJ" announcement yesterday following the indictment by Mr. Smith.

There was no defense of Trump, just that Biden is worse.

Excellent! I worry about the country when so many people including the Republican Party leadership still back him. I had felt much of his backing arose out of ignorance, however I have come to feel that it arises out of a total lack of ethics or moral compass which is really a sad commentary on the depths to which so many of the American people have sunk including the likes of Kevin McCarthy and Elise Stefanik. The bigotry, and racism so prevalent among his supporters, who have become merchants of hate, is troublesome.

It's always bothersome when someone takes so many shortcuts in life, when they didn't have to. Elise Stefanik could have really made something of herself based on her own education, her own backbone, her own abilities.

Instead, she decided it was simpler to get re-elected by hitching her wagon to Trump and using him as a springboard to higher office, all while ignoring the vast majority of her constituents here at home. I loathe her mendacity, her soullessness, her ability to repeat a lie ad nauseum.

She comes from a tradition of professional wrestling heels like Gorgeous George, Ric Flair and MJF. The only question I have is whether or not she actually believes what she says or if she's just really good at playing a character.

I believe she knows she is rotten.

Well said Brian.

I hope against hope to get her on a debate stage and see if she feels shame.

I can’t imagine she actually believes in Trump. The minute 50.5% of the voters in her district are anti-MAGA, she will be shocked, shocked! to discover that he lied, and will turn against him

It is time to finish the job of removing this blight from public life. "Freedom is not a state; it is an act. It is not some enchanted garden perched high on a distant plateau where we can finally sit down and rest. Freedom is the continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society." - John Lewis

Thanks, again, Ken, for your summation and perspective. Right on! Just one comment: if we want examples of attempts to “weaponize” the federal government, simply read the detailed indictments against Trump. This is a solemn day for our nation and the democratic process.

Exactly right.

And, of course, Elise is complicit.

I would encourage anyone who hasn’t read the indictment to do so. I read it while hearing it read by Bulwark’s artificial voice thingy. It’s laid out masterfully.

My favorite phrase in it is “prolific lies.” A good epitaph for Trump, our congresswoman and almost any Republican “serving” in Congress today.

Remember one thing every time a Republican spouts some nonsense about President Biden “weaponizing” the government. Every person who will be testifying against Trump in the federal cases was either appointed or hired by him. In the Georgia case it will be Republican officeholders testifying against him. With the exception of Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman that’s what the January 6th hearings were.

Anyone who believes any of the nonsense distractions coming out of Congressional Republicans is purposely deluding themselves.

There is a version available read by Ali Velshi.

I saw that this morning. I may still give him a listen. I don’t watch TV, but I do listen to MSNBC podcasts. Nicolle Wallace gets the most awesome guests. Love Lawrence O’Donnell and Chris Hayes, too.

It’s nice to be able to just listen while you’re doing other things.

I’d forgotten that that Ali Velshi reading was on the Prosecuting Donald Trump podcast. That usually has Andrew Weissman and Mary McCord. Both fantastic.

Can we put together a GoFundMe to have Morgan Freeman read it?

The sad part is that the lies you read in the indictment are ones that we have all heard prominently promoted. There is no surprises here.
