My experience reading online local papers is challenging because the many, many ads and pop ups are so prolific, it makes it really difficult to read an article. I often just give up. While not against ads, when they interfere so disruptively with reading, it’s a disincentive to stick with an online news source.

Bobcat-this doesn't happen with the E-edition. You have a digital version of the print edition.

I have never subscribed online -- have you

I have read online versions, but the free, limited editions.

Maybe the pop-up ads aren't there if you pay

With the Post-Star if you get print you automatically get digital. Just have to set it up.

bu that doesn't ask my query... if you pay for the print or online.. will you still get pop ups on the online?

We subscribe to several online news sources, esp the New York Times and Washington Post. I'm not sure about the TU; Its pop-up ads are so annoying I can't stand to think about it and the print version seemed to be missing a couple times a week or came long past the coffee hour. I feel guilty about not subscribing to the print version of the TU, but our frustration levels have gone down since we quit the subscription. And, we get sooo many print versions of magazines, news and otherwise, we just can't read them all. Sadly, people just don't read in depth articles anymore. Last week's music edition of The New Yorker magazine was filled with excellent articles, for example. The world is definitely a better place when people keep up with the news in a well-rounded fashion.

I find The Times Union does a great job on NY information, especially State Government.

I run into that with T-U. It can be quite annoying. Other news websites are better.

We've lost our ability (at least politically and in the TV news media) to see a middle ground or compromise for any issue. I've heard Republicans say they may believe in Climate Change but there is nothing we can do about it. It's just a cycle. Can you imagine if we responded like that to every problem? They recycle but don't believe in solar energy. We can spend a fortune on going into space but not take care of the space we occupy. You are either black or white, Republican or Democrat-pick a side. It is insanity.

Well said Barb.

I have to disagree to some extent.

I am often more critical of the left-leaning media than the right...

fox news, knows they are lying, know the people they bring on the show are lying and continue to lie. And worse they continue to move the field markers. (Today, reagan is consider a centric, but in 1980 he was a conservative)

Now on the other hand... the left-leaning media in their concerns to appear fair, will have a scientist to define climate change and the causes... and someone like lauren boebert to explain how it isn't true. They continue to say what hmpy trmpy and #pos_tefanik say is 'untrue' no matter how many times they repeat it.

They refuse to say they are lying, when there is no doubt.. even they know they are lying.

With those kinds of bad actors and changing of the field markers -- there is not a middle ground, because we are not in the same world or on the same level plane

I have no tolerance for Fox and the crazy amplification of silliness and then also destruction on many levels. I'm not sure it is indicative of the general public but it does push people into their corners much more than ever before.

Expand full comment

I've noticed an interesting thing with fox.

(this with my limited exposure)

They know they have been exposed, they have a second lawsuit coming at them, and since they settled with Dominion (i.e. admitting they were wrong).

I think next will be tucker and other liars on fox, along with suits against newsmax

and on the five, with liberal Jessica Tarlov.. she is no nonsense and I think they get it. If you watch the clip below they try to interrupt her with whataboutism. She shuts them up with: "that is misdirection"

-----

Now if this pushes people in corners, so be it..

but winning lawsuits against liars is a trend the liar's are in trouble

Stefanik cares about herself. Furthering her own career and lining her own war chest is what she cares about.

None of us should ever believe she will do the right thing.

She's already started fundraising off of trumps indictment.

Yet the *patriots* still support her and trump. Unbelievable.

Climate change is real and if people don't get it by now there's no hope for them.

I used to be one of those people who insisted on a paper version, but after I broke my wrist, I moved to reading the Post Star E-Edition on my MacBook. I never went back to reading the print edition. I do hope that people keep subscribing as we need local reporting desperately. Give the E-Edition a try and I think you'll find it's easy, and no more stressing about delivery.

We are all capable of adapting. The problem is not print vs digital but the amount of local coverage.

" I am not a scientist" "My colleague, an exasperated Will Doolittle, said to her “You went to Harvard, and you don’t know about climate change.”

How long ago was that? Was the theory of climate change in its early stages?

Just recently a SCOTUS candidate (now judge), 'when asked what is a woman' replied, "I am not a biologist." Judge Brown Jackson is an unworthy political pawn.

Typical issue of Post-Star has little local news. If they are publishing less often, they should cut the wire copy and spend that money on local freelancers.

What they spend on wire service would not support one full-timer. The problem is the debt Lee Enterprises is carrying.

Like anything about #pos_tefanik one must state the obvious - she is a self-centered LIAR.

Thinking that #pos_tefanik would or will do anything that is beyond the scope of her selfish nature is like dreaming you are late for a job you had as a teenager. You might wake up thinking you need to focus on timelines, but will roll over and go back to bed. Someone who lies like eLIEs.. doesn’t change, she digs deeper.

In 2022 she had her worst League of Conservation Voters score card - 11%, with a lifetime score of - 33%

She is not going to change

Expect more of the same.

MORE LIES

MORE EVIL.

It may be instructive to remember that, 100 years ago, an area smaller in size than this year’s burn in Canada devastated part on northern New York. That area is now known as the Adirondack Park.

Did I give an opinion about Stefanik - NO. Did I give an opinion about climate change - NO. Your projections reveal your ignorance.

Please do not address me directly, you've been nothing but nasty from my first post.

I have no interest in anything you have to say. I usually just delete your post without reading them because I couldn't care less what you have to say.

so-so-sophia thanks for your comments on ignorances

considering you can NOT delete a post in substack

considering you seldom direct anyone directly

considering you never have facts to support your dishonest statements

we have to consider you clueless

Maybe if the Adirondacks are burning Elise will send out a statement or do a tweet. We have to remember she’s just a tourist from Albany, tho. So, she may not be that concerned. After all, it’s not chocolate milk.

I dropped the dead tree version of the PS probably a year ago and haven’t missed it. My delivery person sucked very badly and provided the incentive. What I read is the same as the print edition.

I could do without the opinion pieces whether they’re from the left or right. They still seem to do an adequate job of covering local news and I enjoy the letters whether I agree with the writers or not. Some of the ones I disagree with I enjoy the most. And of course gotta keep an eye on the obits to make sure I’m not in there.

I see Foothills is closing down. Substack posts are probably not going to replace established newspapers soon. So, absolutely second the call to support local news and democracy.

Sad to see Foothills shutting down. They were filling in a lot of gaps in local coverage.

Small point in the search for accuracy- it was Philadelphia that last week had the worst air quality in the world according to both print and broadcast news.

The day it was bad here it was widely reported NYC was worst in world - worse than India. It could have gotten worse in Philly later in week.

I've noticed a difference, when it comes to republicans and democrats that post comments online

so-so-sophia really proves the point

when a democrat seems a sososo republican posting online, they see someone who never has facts, often is adversarial.. and in spite of their inability to prove the craziness that they post, will attack back anyone who points this out and we will call that person a troll

a republican will consider anyone who is left of hitler; with facts and sources... and logic --- a troll

While both may be contentious.. the one with the facts and sources always wins, merely because the republican refuses to partake in an actual discussion or debate.

Unfortunately, since their life is based on ignorance, the said republican will brag about 'owning the libs' never learning how far they are from the truth.

Elise is a HUGE disappointment when it comes to Climate change. I don’t see how anyone can ignore it.

I will miss the print format when it goes digital. Hope it’s far away.

Does Elise have a gas stove?… perhaps we should ask…

And it was great seeing her at the pride festival in GF…supporting All of her constituents. (Just kidding, she wasn’t there… unless she was a furry). Sorry, she brings out my WOK dark side.

I’m not a scientist either—just an 86 year seasoned retired American Baptist pastor, smart enough, I assume, to read reputable articles on the environment, climate control, and the science there in.

I recall coming from the Mid-Ohio Valley to the Adirondacks every summer to vacation and climb the high peaks. Into the 1970’s plus, the air pollution coming from the Midwest was so bad at times you could not see the next peak. By the end of the century, however, because of EPA regulations, the air was clearer and you could enjoy once again the full beauty of the ADKs.

I was always an advocate for the environment in my preaching, teaching, and personal life. One of the members of my church was the manager of the coal burning power station of a Union Carbide plant along the Ohio River. Dick and I had several conversations on the topic, and he was in agreement with the EPA regulations and gladly complied with them (Dick, by the way, in the late 80’s or early 90’s personally modified one of his cars to all electric and would drive it to work).

I apologize, if I got too wordy, and at the risk of becoming too preachy, let me conclude by saying that I believe “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof” and we are called to be good stewards and caretakers of this precious gift!
