The contrast between the goodness one person, Bryan Stevenson, can affect through his commitment to positively influence humanity, and the evil another (trump) can have to senselessly wreck domestic and global order could not be more stark. This story of courage, compassion and the pursue of justice makes me feel hopeful. Thank you, Ken.

Bryan Stevenson is an example for us all. He makes every politician in Washington look like useless tools.

Thanks for putting a giant spotlight on “Just Mercy” and the great work of Byron Stevenson. For anybody who wants to dig a little deeper on this issue, I recall that 60 Minutes did a powerful piece that should be easily accessible online. And, more generally on the mistreatment of blacks, an up to date book that just this past week won a Pulitzer Prize is “James”, rewriting Hick Finn. Then, for me, even more enlightening is a book about race at the (race) track, “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks. Both are fictional books on slavery but “Horse” incorporates a lot of astounding true developments.

In the last couple years I've read several books on “Black history”

And it's clear since Civil War time and before that of course it was systematically created an environment to believe people of color or lesser people

Even Thomas Jefferson had some comment about it. Ever forget what he said exactly, but he compared whites to blacks and said they were not as smart. But if you look deeper into his comment he ignored the fact that they were not allowed to learn how to read lacked education and so on

Another book pulling it out that if there was any illustration of a person of color in the media it always depicted them in mockish silly images

New Orleans Times Times Picayune had a front page story on Whitney Plantation explaining how Trump administration had cut some $350,000 in grants to the historic site. Executive director said they were already operating a $5 million operation on a $3 million budget.

How wonderful that you saw Bryan Stevenson in person! I read his book in 2016 and was just totally impressed with this man and how much he had accomplished and now, years later, he continues to be a remarkable person. I just looked at a review I wrote at the time and said that if I were beginning my work life and wondering what my life's work should be, there would be no better choice than working with Bryan Stevenson. Your column title was exactly right...he is definitely a hero.
