"I ask: “What has happened to [our Congresswoman Stefanik]?” But the answer is obvious. Ambition has happened, and it has found satisfaction in her allegiance to Donald Trump. The only loss has been her integrity."

I agree.

But I also think it's much worse than simple blind ambition and a loss of integrity. It's a willingness, or even an eagerness, to substitute a shared sense of community with a selfish desire for raw power over others. A willingness to defend the use of force against those with whom you disagree, and eagerness to forego a disciplined debate over public policy and political ideology. A propensity to cross the line of normality.

We're now in a new age of American politics. Like the ugly hulk of a building that ruins South Street, our new political age is an ugly hulk that is ruining our American democratic experiment.

I’m sure Elise Stefanik supports Donald Trump’s free speech rights when it comes to attacking judge, witnesses, jurors and prosecutors. I’m old enough to remember when appeasing Russian dictators was a bad thing among Republicans. Now it’s a ticket to the vice presidency. Somewhere Jerry Solomon weeps to see what a RINO has taken his seat.

Elise probably got a boost this week in her ambitions when Kristi Noem likely took herself out of the running by bragging in an autobiography that she shot a puppy to death and threw the body in a gravel pit.

That’s today’s Republican Party, ceding territory to Russian aggression and casually murdering puppies. 🐶

I don’t think shooting a puppy bothers Trump. If he wants Noem as VP you will suddenly find that Trump supporters embrace shooting puppies.

Expand full comment

If it was just up to him he’d love it. Even in his diminished state he realizes that would be a major albatross.

Let me see, Obama wasn’t born here, Hillary is a cannibal pedophile, “shoot someone on 5th Ave,” “grab them by the pussy,” drink disinfectant…I could go on for a very long time. I’m not sure puppies win here anymore. Certainly cats don’t.

Expand full comment

Yeah, don’t even get started on cats.

I agree. If Trump can foment and defend the violence of Jan. 6, turning Republican Congressional leaders to his side, then shooting a puppy can easily become the macho, right-wing symbol of 'owning the libs.'

I can imagine J D Vance falling in line, “Well, I don’t hold with shootin puppies but then I remember my grand mammy tellin me that shootin em was a darn sight more humane than puttin em in a sack with a rock and tossin em in the mighty Ohio River like her own daddy woulda done to save on the cost of a bullet.”

And shooting puppies has bonus points for "doing what needs to be done to manage my animals," as well as for supporting the Second Amendment. Of course, there's also the usefulness of the implied threat of "hey, if I'll shoot my own puppy and brag about it, what else will I do?"

Oh theres absolutely NO question that would bother the dumpster - none at all. I doubt this episode of animal abuse and cruelty even caused a blip!

Can't we exercise Eminent Domain?????

Expand full comment

I doubt it. Traditionally, eminent domain is supposed to be used for public projects, like a water line or highway. I very much doubt the Common Council would consider its use. I do think Glens Falls officials should investigate some sort of vacant buildings law for the downtown area. I don't know what is possible on this.

Great info Will. Thanks for clarifying...I think a call to my councilman would be appropriate.

Again, I sincerely hope tRump taps her for the VP slot, then, when he loses, she goes as well..

I've thought the same thing but he won't. She doesn't fall into the same group he enjoys standing next to (Hope Hicks, Noem, Melania, etc). He likes being seen with beautiful people. He won't see a woman as his partner but an ornament. At least that is my guess. Could be wrong...

You're probably right...wishful thinking, right???

You are right on about stsfanik!

“What has happened to Stefanik?”

Maybe the better question is what has happened to us?

Exactly!

That may indeed be the right question.

Those buildings on South st are a disgrace! If you on travelling on Northway , technically, the exit for Glens Falls is exit 18. For years I have told my friends and relatives who come to visit me to take exit 19. I don’t want them going by boarded up and abandoned buildings- not how I want to welcome  visitors to « Hometown,USA »!

When I was interviewing job candidates, I would steer them to Exit 19 for their visit.

We'll know downtown has arrived when that recommendation changes.

NCPR reported that Stefanik responded to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise question on her vote. It is the lack of border solutions here at home. The kind of conservative, bipartisan solution that Trump instructed his minions to kill so it would remain a campaign issue.

Expand full comment

So in essence, her answer was akin to someone saying I didn’t buy milk because you didn’t do the laundry? I pity her husband if that’s how she really thinks!

But even then, she did not talk to the reporter directly. She issued a "statement."

Fair point. Also S.O.P. for our RINO (represntative in name only). I was responding to the author's statement that her camp has been silent on her vote.

Understood. I'll have an update on her response Monday.

If we think of student anti-war protests as an individual student with a vast Venn diagram of complicated thoughts, in my lifetime I can’t think of a war the core principles of that anti-war protester has been wrong on.

So far anti-apartheid protests have been spot on.

Let's not forget Shabat who owns properties that look much the same as Nims....

His store has an alley with a gate...full of rusted equipment and it definitely needs some tlc. No one says a word to him.

I believe he owns the abandoned Rite Aid property? One only has to remember the flea bag Hotel Madden to know he doesn't care or comply to code, yet city officials have turned a blind eye forever.

As for Stefanik- she's too far gone . We can only hope she'll disappear at this point.

Hopefully this country wakes up .

I do not begin to understand why we let Russia get away with the war in Ukraine. As stated they are a poor country and the rest of the world could crush them economically.

If I remember correctly Peter Shabbat sold the building in question to Chad Nims.

I believe that is correct.

Peter Shabat's legacy in downtown Glens Falls is an important but mixed one.

“...she had without exception the most stupid, vulgar, empty mind that he had ever encountered. She had not a thought in her head that was not a slogan, and there was no imbecility, absolutely none that she was not capable of swallowing if the Party handed it out to her. No, I don't consider her "recent efforts regarding the anti-semetic [sic] protests" as "decent." In my opinion, her efforts are a superficial partisan response to complex events and don't reflect sincerely-held values. Our Congresswoman Stefanik has no credible standing to comment on protests, as she disqualified herself when she termed the Jan. 6 criminals, convicted of violent acts against law enforcement, as "hostages." She further disqualified herself by fully supporting a presidential candidate who has said, if elected, he'll consider pardoning those criminals.

Thanks for that reminder.

You have learned well from George Will. Ms. Stefanik's unyielding MAGA support defies common sense and decency. She must lose this coming election.

The thought of supporting an elected representative of this nation who does not support democracy, wherever it may be, is repulsive. This reflects an isolationist ideology which has already been a proven failure. This country will never become what she and her fellow cultists hope.

Vote Blue. Support Ukraine.

It seems there could be a future political "bout" between Stefanik and Noem - Stefanik's lack of understanding exactly what public service is and WHY, and Noem's apparent lack of any kind/type of humane empathy for other species (which raises questions as to her empathy for humans) - sort of an MMA bout? Maybe? I'm sure they both would be "up" for that.

Concerning your commentary on Chad Nims’ ownership of the slum building on South Street...Take a look back......I suggest you read the 0ctober 2018 article on that building in the Glens Falls Business Review. The 2018:ownership, the plans, the promises and the goals ....all remain illusory ....... simply “ smoke and mirrors”.
