The national debt hasn’t been a big problem in recent decades. Even at roughly 100% or a bit more than our national GDP if we compare it to our household budget (which is a bad comparison) we see that we finance a house and a car or 2 for a total of 2-4 times (or more) than our yearly income. It happens all the time.

GWB added $6 trillion or more to the national debt by invading Afghanistan and Iraq. Sure, it happened over 20 years but it happened because of a policy that in the end basically did nothing for us - except sell a lot of munitions and military stuff.

But nobody really blinked an eye because we were seen as a stable nation with stable leadership and the cost of borrowing was relatively low. Good luck with that now.

Re the cuts to science and its progeny, medicine, they are diabolical. Why would any leader do this to the detriment of the people? Trump and his henchman, RFK, Jr. should be prosecuted for attempted murder. The decimation of foreign aid has already caused deaths abroad. U.S. cuts will do the same here. The North Country will be particularly affected by Medicaid defunding, which has consequences for both health care and economics. Closure of Glens Falls Hospital would be a medical tragedy. It's also the largest employer in the Park.
