Your essay is spot on, especially the point about people in positions of public trust avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. It is important that we all see judges as impartial, so they are expected to not only avoid actual conflicts of interests, but anything that might even look like one to people. I'm pretty sure it is part of attorneys' (and judges') code of professional responsibility to avoid even that perception of conflict.

The lack of discernment on the part of Thomas and other Justices is shocking and especially troubling in people who sit in judgement. They all need to hunt around for whatever common sense they once had and ask themselves "if normal people knew about this, would they see it as a conflict?" And if the answer is even a slight "maybe", they disclose.

There was nothing “ inadvertent “ about it. It was intentional and corrupt. We knew this about Thomas years ago and it has only gotten worse with his wife also added to the mix. The abuse of power & wealth in our country is pervasive. They assume everyone will move on with the next chaotic concern and typically that has worked in the past five years.

I would really like to see term limits on positions in our government. 12 years for Supreme Court justices, 1-6 year term for Senators, and 1-4 year term for Congressmen/ women. It most likely will never happen but a girl can dream.

Unfortunately, you are right that it won’t happen.

Judy, I agreed with you on term limits until I recently read an article about what would really happen with term limits. https://hartmannreport.com/p/how-term-limits-turn-legislatures-6b2. Also states, Montana being one, that have implemented term limits are seeing this problem.

Congress has the power to investigate and enforce ethics rules on this body of corrupt, kings in robes. The Nation Magazine has a great series called Contempt of Court which offers some very good ideas on how to fix this problem.

I sympathize with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Filling out forms can be really confusing and I often have a hard time properly filling out government paperwork. I recently had to do some stuff at DMV - did you know you have to have an appointment? I didn’t, and I had to go back the next day - anyway, I thought I’d done a pretty good job. I printed out the proper forms at home and filled in all the pertinent information, or I thought so anyway. But the clerk there was very nice and helpful. She fixed a few things with her red pen, I paid my fee, and I was out of there with new plates and a new registration!

So Justice Thomas and I are a lot alike in our problems with paperwork. Maybe I could be a Supreme Court justice! If I was I’d hire that clerk from DMV to help me out with some of the detail work.

Thank you for your research and observations on this unreported or underreported wealth topic. I believe that this is a touchy subject on both sides of the aisle. Our representatives amazingly and quietly find pathways to serve themselves monetarily much faster than they can legislate improvrments and justice that create pathways to serve the people of this country, including those less fortunate humans who are forced to escape the blatant corruption in their native countries. Wouldn't it be great if our politicians and legislators truly served the people in the same way that so many millions of our essential workers do?

I just LOVE that you are pointing these things out about that radically conservative Judge. These are GROSS errors in his thinking and in his judgement. I’d like him to remove himself from the Court. Thanks for your GREAT writing!

Alito is part of the self-serving corruption racket at SCOTUS too.

Of course, he was the father of the conservative strategy to inflict death by 1000 cuts to Roe v Wade back when he was a hack in the Reagan administration. No coincidence he was appointed to issue the death knell.
