A blight on our country's past that was glossed over in my HS educ. I doubt our school was alone.

Sadly, it wasn’t. Neither did we learn about the Tulsa Massacre.

it is why republicans don't want it taught in school

It would be all too easy to compare their current policies to those of the past

I learned about the Tulsa Massacre when news articles appeared in he HBO series "Watchman" intro. They looked so real that I checked Google and was horrified that no one was tried and convicted for the murders and destruction. History is NOT taught very well in American Schools and Moms for Liberty wants to suppress it even further.

Thank you, Mr. Tingley for making sure we remember the capacity for injustice in our country, where democratic ideals are often met with contradictory actions. Your previous blog entry gave a haunting warning that our freedom to read books is being threatened right on our doorstep, starting with verbal attacks on our library director. Prejudice, has been aimed at many nationalities and cultures throughout our history, and it didn't exclude humans of a lighter skin complexion. The diatribes spewed by racist Americans today were once aimed at descendants of Irish, German, Jewish and Italian heritage who are now considered as White humans. It stops when we put a stop to it. All of us, speaking up and speaking out and taking a stand. Thank you for helping to bring these issues to the forefront.

When will people stop fearing and hating"Other?" I'm a doctor. I've listened to hundreds of stories about life's sadnesses and joys. I've seen hundreds of patients with no clothes on. Let me tell you:

There is no "Other."

I agree that the danger is real. Did you catch the very evasive Elise on Meet the Press? She is most definitely a problem.

Just wind her up and out of her mouth comes the MAGAt rhetoric.

EVERY American should read this and be forewarned as to our potential future unless we challenge the growing fascist threat. Thanks, Ken.

Thank you. Excellent information. I am several years older than you and what I see happening and witnessing Elise Stefanik and her “hitler salute” is very chilling. “HOSTAGES”, like hell. Most were convicted and found guilty by their American peers. How does she continue to get away with this garbage?

not alive in the 1940's but I have read a lot of WW II items of late...

Our prejudice at the time was very interesting

We put the Japanese/Americans in lockup, but did nothing to German Americans

We turned away Jewish refugees, knowing it would be almost certain death for them to return to Germany (of course no different than our current sending asylum seekers back to Central America -- pos_tKKK, hmpy trmpy & and the GQp know what will happen)

I don't know why we did it then.. but I understand it now when I see the republican party's policy of hate

I read Sinclair Lewis’s book, actually called “It Can’t Happen Here,” years ago, and when Trump was campaigning back in 2015, I already saw the parallels. I think I even wrote a letter to the Post Star saying he was using it as his playbook, or words to that effect. I vacillate between despondency and hope when I think about where this country will be in a year.

Please don't despond. Work with local candidate organizations who will fight the Trump malaise in the 2024 election. Ken even mentioned just writing letters to local papers will help convert some minds to our side.

I would like to think so, but I don’t know. Has a pro-Trump letter ever swayed you? It’s not even so much the true believers that worry me. It’s the ones who know better but have decided to wave the flag for their own purposes, like Stefanik, and the ones who overlook his catastrophic unfitness to hold office because they like his tax policy, who keep me up at night.

It’s never EVER been more important that everyone V O T E. We can help

1). Offer neighbors a ride to the polls

2). Offer folks a ride to the Board of Elections or even help with just a phone call (518-761-6458) to request an absentee ballot for 1 election or every election. Bill Vanness is the Election Commissioner.

3). Contact the Democratic party chairman for Warren County & be a volunteer for election day, or for helping with a phone bank, or volunteering for other things like helping stuff envelopes or planning events. ( i have requested a contact number)
