One of the problems that exists (I think) in a lot of these situations.. is there is more trust in politicians than professionals.

and clearly Josh Jacquard thinks he knows more about books then a librarian

Yes there are controversial books in libraries that might even be sex manuals.. But to assume a librarian (or any professional) would give an inappropriate book to a child is kind of crazy.

I can't imagine these folks think the same thing about gun shop owners -- in which I heard one owner boast how he had to tell a dad that even if he was buying a gun for his underage daughter.. he couldn't say so, or he couldn't sell it to him

while admitting that the dad had already said that

I interviewed Kathy Naftaly, the head librarian at Crandall Library, and they have a pretty stringent vetting process they go through before allowing books on their shelves. Simply, asking the librarian would be a pretty good way to find out if a book is age appropriate.

I believe in larger libraries like in Glens Falls it is a committee, There is also a process to object to a book which is also reviewed by a committee.

one has to wonder

what was Josh Jacquard's goal

and did he achieve it by closing the library

---

add to this, if you have a SALS card (as I do) by closing one of the branches it means people that use that branch, that live in that area.. do not have a library, which means they no longer have access to SALS, unless the go to another branch... but they can't go to 'their' library and do an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) from other brances

AND

It probably I can't go to Long Lake an borrow a through ILL from Rockwell Falls Public Library in Lake Luzerne.

It also means if Rockwell Falls Public Library in Lake Luzerne has a book that isn't in the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System... people can't get that book

----

let's just accept Josh Jacquard and his ilk

DO

NOT

WANT

an educated populace

and the questions, now includes why does Josh Jacquard want ignorance

okay, but why... the article appears to have some editorializing in it.

But if the entire paper isn't to be trusted why?

I have no qualms with it not being trusted, but I would like to know why.

Pat Lewandowski is the woman Peter Brady struck from behind after he punched a man moments before. She wanted to press charges but the sheriff deputy said she couldn’t. I don’t understand that. I regret leaving before police arrived.

Expand full comment

I hope there is more to it.. but not sure why someone being hit and another person punched (with witnesses) would not be an arrestable offense?

this article says

no one pressed charges (sort of):

https://wnyt.com/top-stories/brief-fight-breaks-out-after-lake-luzerne-library-board-meeting/

"The fight was quickly broken up and Warren County Sheriff’s deputies responded. Brady told The Post-Star that neither person pressed charges."

Not sure if Brady is believable

Please take a hard look at the social media page of Chris Music for BOE24 . He's running in SGF.

He is a perfect example of the point you're trying to make.

He got 400 votes last year...which shows that 400 people in my community buy into his wild propoganda. (Gays Against Groomers (hate group), Family Values Flag, Tik-Tok ...you get the drift.

Groups and individuals such as Jaquard and Music are trying to insinuate themselves into local politics and boards.

We can't let this happen.

o man... one of his posts might not seem controversial, but he was questioning the board of education for meeting in a closed session to discuss contract negotiations

i.e. he is running for a position, in an entity that either he doesn't know the laws, or doesn't know how to look them up, or even ask the school..

Obviously, one of the reasons a board can meet in executive session is contract negotiations. That should be common knowledge….

Expand full comment

He didn't know that.. but maybe worse, he still doesn't know why...

As in when you are negotiating you don't want to say "we put $400,000 aside for a potential raise, but we only want to spend $200,000 of it"

I am always amused (amazed) at how at the first meeting for a new board member it is the actually first meeting s/he attended. Also, to see the guy's face turn pale when he didn't realize the same vote that he won in, also approved a budget that had the new contract in it.. the only reason he was running

Interesting that the co-founded of Moms for Liberty - whose agenda Music, Linda Clark and others around here are parroting - is being investigated with her husband for sexual battery against a woman who they were allegedly in a relationship with. Sounds like as soon as Mr. Jacquard said "agenda", he revealed HIS "agenda". Can you imagine if 'Geraldine' of the Flip Wilson Show, or Bosom Buddies, or Mrs. Doubtfire, or any other comedy show where men dressed up as women were to air today, these people would have a STROKE! GROW UP!! Their idiotic NONSENSE is getting extremely tiring. They should just stay home, lock their doors, and only come out if necessary. Kids have more common sense than THEY do!!

Years ago HIS type of agenda (what's good and what's bad) was taught by parents to their children. It is okay for an individual to explain to a family WHY something is good or bad, but leave the final decision up to the family. Do not force your own beliefs onto others.

Josh Jacquard displays shocking ignorance about the library where he serves on the board (and about the library system SALS): “… Requiring accountability as it relates to annual taxpayer funding, especially considering that the funding more than doubled four years ago.”

Yes, the funding for the library doubled (probably more than doubled) 4 years ago. It was the whole point of a public vote to provide a more stable source of revenue and without that change there likely would not have been services such as free WiFi during the pandemic that many families depended on for school and work. This is not a secret, it was in the newspaper: https://poststar.com/news/local/voters-approve-hadley-luzerne-library-charter-change/article_6196537a-6ae2-5bf6-abf0-38eb232edd9c.html

The problem in Luzerne is that there is a lack of good faith in attempting to resolve conflict which you demonstrate well in this post.

One note on Peter Brady, I happened to be standing near the 2 men when the altercation broke out. They had an argument because Brady had gone to the other man’s parents house and harassed them. He was asking Brady to stay away from his parents. Brady has been a subject of complaints by others for intimidating behavior. I stepped between the men after Brady struck first. What Brady did not mention in the Post Star was what happened after I released him when I thought the fight was over…he immediately struck a woman who was not involved in the altercation from behind. But she was not just any woman, she had been on the board but resigned weeks earlier because the strife surrounding the library was affecting her health. People have been asking for Peter Brady to be banned from the library but he hasn’t been. Earlier in the meeting Brady commented disparagingly about SALS. Josh Jacquard commented that he agreed with him. He is not a person who acts in good faith.

Another thing that should be pointed out.

Just about every library has a challenge book policy.

People can say a book should not be in the library.. maybe even say, you can have it, but it should not be on the shelves.

Of course the major problem for people who want to challenge a book -- one of the first questions:

"Have you read the book?"

for many people who want to remove books, the question could easily be: "Have you read ANY book?"

Thank you, Mr. Tingley, for publicizing this debacle. If anyone questions what lies behind the "agenda" of an official oblivious to the separation of church and state, think again. Why would anyone, particularly a young woman librarian and a few long-term women trustees, want to"sexualize children?" Fantasy land. No one, by the way, was ever "sexualized" by a book, but many have been comforted and validated by the right book. Be that as it may, no one's personal evangelism belongs in a public library.

For the record, the name of the trustee who bravely introduced the anti book-banning resolution is

Jones, not Smith.

Keep defending democracy!

one of the biggest things that often gets overlooked here...

One person, with one or two supporters (albeit, violent supporters) was able to:

• stop a functioning library

• cause boar members to quite

• use violence and get away with it

• overturn the decisions made by voters

(in essence, Josh Jacquard staged his own Jan 6 insurrection)

It can't be stressed enough Is this what the majority of Lake Luzerne want? I doubt it.

Add to this, I have no problem with people deciding what THEIR children read, but (again) the majority of that library patrons was happy with the choices afforded them.

Thank you again, Ken. How could anyone object to the library's resolution of core values--freedom of expression, right to read freely...But there are always bullies who scream loud and rouse violence and make people afraid-who want to silence and limit and restrict--people like Jacquard who takes up air and space, projecting unto others what he himself does, accusing others of having an "agenda," wanting to impose their agenda of exclusion and hate. It happens in the school yard, in fundamentalist churches, with "mothers for liberty"--it happens on local levels and in the world. Think of Trump and his continual threats against anyone who questions and does not bow to his will, think of our representative Stefanik who stands by "her man," wanting to be vice president to a dictator. .Always bullies in this world. And the need to speak, to resist, to not let them takeover airwaves and social media,to not give power to those who want power---to save our libraries, schools, constitution , to work for inclusion, diversity, interconnection, dialogue, justice for all. Libraries have always stood for intellectual freedom; tyrants have always banned and burned books and restricted education,

Ken, thanks for your perspectives on a very serious issue. Having served on both a library board and two school boards (at different times), I share your concerns. Normally not an alarmist, i join with you and others who see a real threat to our personal freedoms and democratic institutions. This is no time for complacency. To paraphrase a patriot of old, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of authoritarianism is for good people to remain silent and do nothing.”

Wholeheartedly agree that the threat posed by the would-be book banners not only defies the Establishment Clause, but invites authoritarianism. It's how fascism begins. Of interest is Madeleine Albright's book, "Fascism, A Warning." The takeover steps are always the same.
