"[Trump] hates California because California loves immigrants. Why he hates immigrants I don’t know. But he is hurting our country."

Of course, Trump doesn’t hate all immigrants. After all, two of his three wives are immigrants and mothers to most of his children. Immigrants from Norway are acceptable. Even desirable. And immigrants who can afford Trump’s "Gold Card for the USA," costing $5 million, are quite welcome here. Afrikaner farmers have been offered a "safe haven" to emigrate to the US.

No, Trump can "love" immigrants if they’re the right kind of immigrant: white, well-off, with an elite air about them.

I suspect Trump will attempt to revise the wording of the Larzarus poem associated with the Statue of Liberty to say "Give me your elite, your wealthy, Your privileged whites…."

In Trump’s world, no "shithole" countries need apply.

Trump would be fine with welcoming wealthy retirees from other countries, exactly the sort of immigrant we don't need.

EXCELLENT...Very well said! Will, I lived in San Francisco from 1969 through 2015, and who knows?? We may have crossed paths at one point. I also went to college in Fresno and Los altos. It's a WONDERFUL State, and tRump is really headed for TROUBLE if he keeps this up. Thank you for breaking out the marvelous integrated culture of California. This is why I settled in the State for 50 years. Being home now is wonderful and appropriate...California, especially San Francisco is for younger people, and that's never going to change. Let's hope we can take away tRump's congress next year and start to reverse his "engines"..

If you are in a rural agricultural community, immigrant labor is essential and ubiquitous. They bring diversity and energy and industriousness that would otherwise be absent. What is happening is shameful.

Yes. Apparently some notion has been floated of enlisting people on Medicaid, who will soon be required to work to receive their benefits, as farm labor. It's not a serious proposal but a requirement that any sensible person knows cannot be met

“ Today the administration ended temporary protection from deportation for about 72,000 migrants from Honduras and another 4,000 from Nicaragua. The decision strips them of their legal status and echoes similar decisions made about migrants from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Haiti, Nepal, and Venezuela. A federal court has blocked the early termination of protected status for Haitians.” Heather Cox Richardson

Donald Trump’s mother was from Scotland and paternal grandfather from Germany. I don’t think Northern European immigrants bother him so much. I remember him saying once he’d welcome those from Norway. God knows why anyone there would want to come here, tho. The home country of the original Quisling probably has a better feel for fascism than we do.

I wonder about his mother. Apparently, she was dirt poor. Perhaps she loathed her own childhood and passed that on in a general way to her son

I don’t know anything about her. The irony that the Scots brought Enlightenment to America and now a descendant of that country is bringing idiocracy is lamentable, tho.

I respect the patriotism of the folks on Rt 32 but honestly, that flag should have been retired long ago. If I was still in NY instead of PA, I would offer to help them replace that flag. Would be nice if someone closer could take up this challenge.

These days I would think twice about approaching the door of someone with a tattered flag to offer them a new one.

In fact, when I did a couple of stints with the Census I was sent to the houses of refusals - places that had aggressive responses, the ones with a growling dog at the end of a chain, the ones with a sign threatening to shoot first. It’s been 15 years since then and now it’s much easier to spot those sorts of places. They’ve added flags that support Trump by saying “F*ck Your Feelings,” except the F word is spelled out.

LOL.

No, I grew up dealing with ornery horses and ponies, so I have a pretty good sense of when a situation may turn bad. And I’ve dealt with a lot of dogs. My mother told us that if you get bit by a dog you probably deserved it. That’s because the dog is going to give you a warning, a sign, before it bites and you should not be there for that situation.

I do remember a big husky that I was pretty sure would maul me if he could, but his chain looked secure and it was about 3’ shy of the door, so I knocked, left the forms in the door, and backed away slowly, making soothing sounds until I was well away.

Animals are all pretty much the same. You can usually tell a dangerous horse, dog, or person by the signs.

"Flags on Route 32 have stories to tell"

Whenever I see an American flag paired with a ‘Trump flag’, I wonder what story the resident is really trying to tell.

Ken, you said you don't know why Trump hates immigrants & California. Tyrants have to have somebody who's feared & hated. "Immigrants are the new Jews." Our turn may come, as the German pastor warned us long ago, so NOW we speak out. Trump's just another sociopath, but one from immense wealth, who became Mr. Television before politics, like Ronald Reagan. Trump's only difference from the run-of-the-mill thug, are his ambitions & dreams, like Charlie Chaplin in the "Great Dictator", dancing with the earth balloon. Trump is America's greatest 21st Century con artist. If immigrants weren't such an easy target ('50s B-movies like "Invaders from Mars"), Trump would prioritize others. He saw the "Tea party" rallies with banners of Obama in a loin cloth with a bone in his nose, the weeping white woman saying "I want my country back." Black people would be next. Hate is tyranny's energy drink.

Of course that flag looks ashamed! Of all the things the people who brought us Donald Trump do that are so vile, one of the worst is the way they wrap themselves in the American flag as they literally are working to destroy what it stands for.
