This is what the combination of Trump's relentless fear and hatred campaigns, social media on the Internet, AI, and the legacy media pillorying Harris while sane-washing Trump will do. And the idea of listening to others, seeking out views from different sources with different agendas, even engaging in a thought process that includes a brake system for stopping the fear and hatred arising within from taking over - these are important. This is creeping fascism. If this stuff doesn't frighten you and make you think that maybe somebody will come after you with some bogus story about how you will destroy them, then start there, because fear and hatred are a forest fire that takes way too long be be stopped. I hope Harris wins and Trump/Vance are sent packing but the problem is that their potion for winning based on fear and hatred will take time to be tamped down.
As for the "Never" appendix to Elise's signs, this is refreshing. If I had a car, I'd go searching for that breath of fresh air.
As a newspaper editor, we called it the BS meter. If it sounded weird, odd, unusual, we questioned it. It seems if people read something on social media that is weird, odd, unusual and can't possibly be true, they believe it.
As we speak, meteorologists, according to Marjorie Taylor Greene and others, are the targets du jour. Imagine actually thinking that a political party can control the weather at all - except of course who controls the dispute over climate change - is insane. If anything, the weird weather in which storms hover over an area for days and Houston, for example, got 3 feet of rain a few years ago... If there's a party that controls the issue of climate change without allowing anything to be done about it? Turn, MTG, to your own party. Clean up's a bitch.
My Dad told me thought what was then called global warming wasn't true, because the weather was pretty cool in his neck of the woods the past few years. Then, where things were getting hotter, he thought it was ok because hey they are growing wheat in Canada now in places they couldn't before.
Proposition 1 will make it difficult for future Republican legislators in NY State to try to take away women's rights to access full health care when needed, for whatever they need it. As you so clearly stated, vote YES if you support equal rights for all. It is as simple as that.
Didn't NYS codify a women's right to abortion after the Supreme Court nullified Roe/Wade? Doesn't NYS already have some of the country's most comprehensive protections for equal rights for "all legal" citizens? Why do we need another layer of protection unless there are some hidden agendas in Prop ! language? This seems to be the basis for the ardent opposition to this somewhat vague and mysterious proposition. Intelligent people are reading through the lines. If Prop ! does not provide the State a means for its multitude of Departments and Agencies to implement the actions that people are concerned about, why don't the framers of the language step up to deny these claims?
This proposition is not another layer. It is the foundation. We are a nation of laws based on the foundational principle that government exists to secure our basic rights. Laws can be changed, the constitution not so much.
I think NYS has great constitutional protections, as you say, and would normally agree with you that this could be unnecessary. But I thought the same thing about the US Constitution until the Supreme Court jettisoned Roe after 50 years of precedent. So now I think, yes, it could happen here in NYS if the wrong people every control the courts, so I'm all for any added protections they can pile on. I will be voting yes.
As I stated, people thought abortion rights were guaranteed as well. Considering what happend there, it seems like a another layer of freedoms might be justified. The fact that people automatially look for ulterior motives reflects what the current political climate has created - Total distrust. The NY State Republicans fact list on Proposition 1 is at best an overreach, at worst total fantasy.
This is a very deliberate tactic by fascists. They claim such protections are redundant because they want to make it easier to reverse the 20th century if they gain the power to do so.
When Prop 1 was moving its way through the legislature pre-Dobbs, they made the argument that it was unnecessary because of Roe (still in place at that time).
Their b.s. doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Scaremongers say that Prop 1 is going to do all kinds of horrible things never seen before. How is that possible if it's "redunant" to what's already there?
Just recently, a NYC woman was investigated for killing her miscarried fetus. This is bright blue New York City in 2024. There are people in New York State and even New York City who are forced birthers.
Also, Prop 1 covers marginalized people whom today's Republican Party have demonized. I have difficulty understanding why men in drag want to read to children and I think they and the kids would be better off if kids weren't exposed at young ages. But trans people per se, female impersonators, gays, people of color, people of other religions? Aren't there more important things to deal with that will improve everyone's lives other than these culture wars?
I am arguing against a reintroduction to the Inquisition and actual hunts for witches to burn and drown, much less all of the above people. Live and let live.
Exactly. This smacks of the Salem witch hunts. We are watching the same tactics that spread lies and fear, which lead to deadly actions like January 6th and attacks on innocent citizens. If we don't curtail these falsehoods, fear and repression will prevail.
Opponents are scaremongering by claiming Prop 1 would do all sorts of imaginary horrible things. How is that possible if it's "redundant" to what's already there?
The political fireworks in Queensbury are directly related to the presidential election.
SCOTUS ended Roe v Wade and Proposition 1 was NY Democrats response to “sending the question back to the states.”
Republicans have turned this debate into an attack on trans people. They don’t have a problem with the fundamental question of guaranteeing individual rights, as they admit all of these rights are currently guaranteed in law. Their effort is to stir up dark passion in their base simply to win an election.
I’m not making this up. They’re spending $65 million on ads targeting trans people in an effort to sway women against voting in their own best interest.
In the March town board meeting when this was first brought before the board councilperson Dixon said something to the effect of “why hasn’t this been enacted already?”
Thank you!! Protecting these rights in the NYS Constitution will make it difficult to rescind them if a future administration tries to do so(god forbid!!!). It requires 2 sessions of the legislature AND a vote put before the people to amend the Constitution.
The hysteria against Prop 1 at Monday's meeting is part of the pre election exponentially increasing flood of disinformation. Sadly , one speaker at the meeting repeated a Trump generated false talking point that FEMA is running short on disaster relief funds due to the Biden administration using FEMA disaster funds for illegals, a debunked and untrue statement but one that echos what Trump actually did himself back in 2019 redirecting FEMA funds "to transfer $155 million to create temporary facilities along the U.S.-Mexico border for holding hearings with the aim of moving asylum cases through the system faster.” . In double checking myself on this I went to factcheck.org----"https://www.factcheck.org/2024/10/trumps-false-claim-of-stolen-disaster-relief-funds "/ which printed this following statement in rebuttal to Trump's recent inflammatory and untrue accusation re: Harris and Biden:
"As FEMA has said , that money was not rerouted from FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund, which is funded by Congress separately. The money for migrant support came from the budget of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, another DHS agency."
This is the kind of manipulative and politically motivate lie which gathered enough momentum perhaps to sway speakers petitioning the recent Queensbury Board vote to turn down the proposal to support Prop 1.
It was pretty widely broadcast. When challenged on CNN, Trump's Comms DIrector insisted it was true. When confronted with the fact no FEMA money was moved for that purpose, her "truth" was that the American people don't care what pot of money the migrant money came from, that the money could have been used for FEMA instead of migrants. Which is a far cry from stealing from FEMA, but provides clarity on how these people can lie and insist they are not. I think Kelly Anne Conway (who I actually kind of like), first coined the phrase "alternate truth" which seems to be the mantra of the Trump campaign.
Ooopss and sort of WOW....I am totally curious about what you find likable about Kelly Ann Conway. I heard her in an interview not long ago and she talks SO FAST!! Is it to prevent ANY attempt to really question her about what she is saying? I'll take her Ex-husband, George, any day.
I don't like her politics, but think she is super smart and capable. And I felt for her when her complicated daughter publicly said she wanted to be emancipated. There are lots of people I deeply disagree with who I kind of like.
This Republican stream of lies does not stop with Trump, Stefanik or other elected officials who spout them out loud, via press releases, or on their social media sites. The NY State Catholic Conference has published the same lies in parish church bulletins. With a link to the letter signed by all NY bishops that is entitled, "Proposal 1: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing". As with everything this election cycle, it's all about the fearmongering, be that it Prop. 1 or undocumented migrants, or FEMA seizing property. It's getting crazier the closer we get to Nov. 5 and I fear it will get even more uglier.
Jean Lapper has been a passionate trooper for Prop 1. Kudos to her for telling her story and the truth about Prop 1. Appalling the ignorance in our commp!
I was telling my husband, I hadn't paid much attention to Prop 1, then was reading about how the NYS GOP is focusing on one small aspect of it to again attack trans people. I am so tired of their excessive fixation on genitalia. And, honestly, Republicans like Elise are so very far out there now on the fringe, I'm feeling that anything they oppose, is something I should probably support. And that is not a good situation for me to be in, that kind of knee jerk reaction.
I agree , people should be able to pee in peace wherever that leads them. But let’s get rid of those multi stall toilets and go with the fully private individual stalls that anyone can use. Rather than fight over this, we can take the issue off the table and have a much better restroom experience all around.
There was an old TV show about lawyers called Ally McBeal and they had a unisex bathroom. Many restaurants and bars have that out of necessity. There does not seem to be a problem.
I see them more and more frequently now, too. And if the GOP wants to get bent out of shape about public restrooms, they should take on the shortage of women's toilet facilities compared to men's at stadiums. Now there's a bathroom issue I could get behind.
Ken, when quickly going through today’s newsletter, I did a double take…Is Ken saying Paula is lying about something? No, you aren’t but to my slow brain, that was the impression when you had the Paula campaign poster and talked about lying together…just sayin’!
I’m a big supporter of Paula. She doesn’t lie, she’s my choice for that seat, etc, and I’m sorry my comment was misconstrued. I just was trying to say to Ken that I thought HIS message could be misunderstood!!!!!
Unbelievable!!!! The Republican party in this area has completely gone BONKERS!!! So sad....once we get rid of tRump, perhaps these characters will calm down and start doing the "people's" business.
It's unfortunate but this is one of the "hot button" issues that the REP party has latched on to this cycle and it is about as divisive as it gets. Many of the comments here are spot on. Sadly it only takes a few people to create hysteria over trans issues and while I wasn't at the QBY board meeting I read about it. Tim McNulty is a perfect example of the Trump local version of MAGA REPs. Seems to me there is a big conflict of interest there, but face it this comes from the top. Gov. Josh Shapiro last night said it flat out about Trump in a speech. "Stop S**T Talking America!" We are the greatest country in the world, but you have a segment of our society that is picking certain issues to drive a wedge between the social fabric that keeps us together. Very sad. Scarier is the fact that Elon Musk is going all in for Trump and spending millions and using X platform to swing the election. IF Harris/Walz lose the election, we are on a path of destruction for our Democracy! We are almost 250 years old and yet, the REP party is trying to destroy our government and put a dictator wannabe in power. Vote Row A all the way! I leave you with a quote from a friend recently, "I just want this to be over and for everyone to be friendly and get along together again!" I believe the damage that the Trump era has created is going to be very long lasting. Lies, outrageous conspiracy theories, and the endless grab for more power and money has brought us to this place where there will be no turning back if REPs win back the White House (and god forbid Senate). I just hope I will wake up from this nightmare on November 6th with Harris winning. Otherwise I suspect the power shift on the planet will become dark and chaotic for the rest of my life.
FDR said, in another context, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

I'm a retired physician. I've seen lots of naked people. And believe me, there is no "Other." We are all the same. VOTE PROPOSITION ONE!

If an idea is weird, odd, or unusual, people might adopt it because they think they are being <ahem> ingenious, unique, thinking for themselves.
My grandmother during the 1960s used to blame weird weather on the space program. They shouldn't be fooling around up there she used to say.
My Dad told me thought what was then called global warming wasn't true, because the weather was pretty cool in his neck of the woods the past few years. Then, where things were getting hotter, he thought it was ok because hey they are growing wheat in Canada now in places they couldn't before.
The sand thing about this (not directed at your dad)
Now that it is clear there is climate change... instead of saying "I was wrong"
they change the subject (oh good we can grow wheat in Canada and fry eggs on the sidewalk in Kansas)
What a fine message. Thank you!
Thank you, Ken!

Right! Prop 1 will not change any law or regulation, but will codify existing laws and regs in the NY Constitution.
And, if NY political power tilts rightward, those laws and regs will be harder to change.
I'm urging everyone to turn their ballots over and vote YES on PROP 1.

His no vote was purely political.
I forgot about that one. And he represents me. Oh my!
That this is even a debatable issue is infuriating. Basic human rights should never be subject to legislative whims. Vote yes. Then move on.
Exactlly. There is no argument to be had here.
I'm urging people to turn their ballots over and vote YES on Prop 1.

As usual, great quotes Don.
"You cannot remove with reason what reason never put there in the first place”
I had never seen that phrase but boy does it ever fit perfectly with so many of our fellow humans!
Thanks Don
