I wrote a column a few years ago about how it is illegal to air false advertising, but not illegal to make false statements in political ads. I guess that is where we are.

Seems to me every single news outlet lied to the people. They lied about Russia, about Ukraine, about the laptop, about the elections. Everyday it’s more lies. Fox is no better than CNN 🤷‍♀️

Expand full comment

Every news outlet did NOT lie. The legitimate, responsible stations reported what was actually happening, as they have done for decades! That also includes the Post Star.

Expand full comment

You would have to give examples of those lies. I do not know of lies by other news organizations. I don’t believe there is any evidence of lies from CNN unless you are listening to what Fox is saying.

Exhibit A: “they all do it.”

Hello Rachel

What is it, they all do?

Expand full comment

Per my other comment in this thread, Fox viewers excuse these blatant lies with “they all do it.”

They all don’t do it!

Rachel

Let me attempt to unravel my web of confusion.

June writes “Every news outlet did NOT lie.” Your reply “Exhibit A: “they all do it.””

My first thought…… what exhibit A? I don’t see an example, just a statement “they all do it”

All I see is someone saying, They all don’t lie and some else saying Wrong ….. they all do it.

Which lead to my question, they all do what?

One down, one to go.

Would this be the comment you are referring too “They want to hear what they want to hear. “They all do it” is likely what they’ll excuse them with and they’ll just keep on buying the”?

How you say “Fox viewers excuse these blatant lies with “they all do it.””

You have gone from how that might excuse it, to Fox viewers definitely do it.

My “exhibit A” comment is in response to Te Reagan’s comment “Seems to me every single news outlet lied to the people.” I say elsewhere that the Fox viewers’ excuse is that they all do it and Reagan’s comment is Exhibit A.

Expand full comment

So, Rachel are you agreeing with Te Reagan statement that every single news outlet lied to the people?

I watch our local NBC affiliate the most for local news and weather but I prefer to listen to our local public radio for national and global news.

PBS Newshour at 6 p.m. locally is also very good.

FOX, Santos, the list of out and out liars keeps getting longer.

And what is the consequence?

fOx still profiting off fools

#POS_antos still in office and almost got to serve on committees

I hope Dominion bankrupts Fox News so they are completely wiped off T.V. forever!!

Why is anyone surprised?

The shock is that the culture within the news division is never about the journalism but about the ratings and making money.

Expand full comment

That should not be a shock. It's an unfortunate reminder, as you should well know. I don't see Mark Frost packing it in!

Sadly, many folks fail to distinguish between news (real news) and entertainment; even the most sober television outlets muddy the distinction with their fawning coverage of Hollywood and TV "news." And then, viewers who bought the Fox version of the world would have to admit they fell for the gag. Not many of us willingly do that. Gee, it's embarassing to say :"I'm wrong." Look at M.T. Greene (if you can).

I think you are right. There are some extreme examples on the liberal side that we don’t pay much attention to. I still think most people are not at the extremes, but in the middle. Is there a middle anymore?

Expand full comment

I honestly think most people are but there are no politicians to represent them anymore.

I mostly read my news because I don’t have cable. I get it from Washington Post, The Atlantic, Bulwark and Daily Beast. PS, TU and Foothills for local happenings. I do listen to Nicolle Wallace, Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell podcasts. Bulwark pods are great, too.

It’s odd to me that I listen so much more to opinion from people who are center right than on the left. They’re more apt to tell me things I don’t want to hear. I’ll just share a piece that Charlie Sykes had up the other day. I’d kind of dismissed the whole woke issue. I think that’s a blindness on my part.

“Center right” equals Never Trumpers. Past Kevin is appalled that Present Kevin is reading and agreeing with Bill Kristol. Also, missing Michael Gerson.

I always considered myself center right, but like Reagan, that would be liberal now.

Spending over 65 years in upstate NY, you can only be just so far to the left. Unless you listen to Elsie, I suppose.

She is about to go a fourth round of the latest chemo treatment. But as usual, she is holding up pretty darn well.

“I don’t see how any regular viewer of Fox could ever trust them again.” - Fox viewers have proved they don’t care that they’re being lied to. They want to hear what they want to hear. “They all do it” is likely what they’ll excuse them with and they’ll just keep on buying the 💩.

They only watch Fox News and they didn't report on their own lying behavior. My parents watch nothing but Fox and refuse to believe they are the ones lying. It's sad.

This is not a fox thing.

This is not a republican thing.

Yes they lie

KNOWINGLY lie

This is a democracy problem!

There is a reason why #POS_tefanik does not do local (objective) interviews.

If she was interviewed....

check that -- if she was interviewed it would need to be eight hours of interviews to go over all the lies she has made in the last six years.

If she was interviewed she would have to have a polygraph and be under oath.

fOx, #POS_tefanik--- the gop

need to be accountable.

For looking the other way with trump colluded with Russia, when he extorted Ukraine

WHEN HE GRIFTED AMERICA

It is also time to hold all other politicians accountable - Democrats, libertarians, and independents.

They need to go all Alice Cooper on crooks... No need for a guillotine.. but in another time and place that would be the course.

They need to be:

"No more Mister Nice Guy"

If you don't show up for the subpoena

You sit in Jail

You lie -- you are removed from government

The democrats have this feeling that they need to wear kit gloves.. that that is the respectful way to government

But what happens and when the gop is in charge, even in charge of just a fraction of the government?

They weaponize government, and ironically they have no qualms about admitting it by calling it:

"Weaponization of the Federal Government"

Talk about on-brand. Talk about projecting your own evil.

Talk about time for accountability!

Dear #POS_tefanik, I quote Mr. Alice Cooper

"He said you're sick, you're obscene"

fox news has been caught lying. The consequence in a civil case will be financial if convicted. But that is not where this obstruction of justice should end. In fact the $1.6 billion suit by Dominion is likely half a day of profits for fox and only a civil trial.

fox.. any media, when the lies are this egregious should face higher punishments

The offenders =

• jail

• removed from all FCC controlled media

The supporterFCC-controlled (i.e. #POS_tefanik) =

• jail

• removed from office

The station =

• FCC license removed

• jail for the owner

Having gone through several of these interviews she was always difficult to pin down.

Expand full comment

From what I have seen of her.. in the publican she has some really vague dodges. Always seems like you hear her talk for five minutes and then think... did she say anything.

The best I have seen is let her say it or write it, then go factcheck it. Way too often she is lying.

She might not think she is lying... but it is clear (for example) she has (and continues) to push her dog whistle of replacement theory. And then when the murders took place in Buffalo she tried to say, that wasn't what she said.

Yet you read what the killer said and wrote and you start to wonder if he was quoting #POS_tefanik

I totally agree with you. They should have some explaning to do. It is so, so dangerous to our democracy! Keep up the great work!
