It's good to read your work again Will! I am looking forward to reading you in the Front Page. We may not always agree, but I have always found your work to be honest, fair, and reasonable. And I hope you feel better soon!
So nice to read your guest column (you are missed). I hope you get that PT very soon. As for the effects of our country's politics and our behavior, I fear that too many politicians from both major parties use their elected positions to fill their personal coffers, causing mistrust for some of us. On the one hand, many of us are willing to believe their lies, or campaign rhetoric, and on the other hand, many of us just bite the bullet and ""vote for the lesser evil", which is dismaying to a liberal idealist like me. I am encouraged when sometimes, some of the worst offenders are held politically and criminally accountable.
You bring up (indirectly) a point I never understand. People have garage sales, at the very least, to unload unwanted items.. and also to make a little profit.
No matter how much they disagree with you politically, I am sure people are nice to you because they want to sell things.
If you are in the service/sales industry, you want customers... you want people to feel comfortable.
There are business that don't approach life like this. There is a business that put political signs out front and center. In Saranac Lake there is a motel business that has a sign out front. It's a stefanik sign, but I think this goes for any party affiliation.
(Of course with stefanik there is the fact that she has a history of dishonesty and trying to overturn a legal election, but even if she was a saint... well she isn't)
I wonder, is that motel business like stiffy.. will they circulate dishonest (fake) rumors about people who stay there.. about their love life... like eLIEs' campaign has done about her oponents?
Why do businesses do this?
There is an arts org just down the road with Castelli signs.. the same, do they want republicans not to buy art?
Put your signs in your front yard, or apartment window. I get that you might say this is a first amendment right... and it is, but why disregard the beliefs of your customers.
Side note... I was at a seminar for a volunteer organization... There was a woman speaking about dementia and in her slide presentation, there was a picture of Will and Bella.
For the people who know the couple, it was a nice way to put a human touch on the issue and Bella's smile in the picture, put a smile on my face.
I hope you feel better soon. Your column has made me realize that I have been guilty of trying to shame those I feel are betraying our country as supporters of a local Congresswoman. Maybe I should tone it down and see the good in others. It's worth a try.
I'm a lefty and proud of it! I try to be polite and listen to far right leaning people. I can only take so much I politely excuse myself walking away feeling sorry how they believe the lies of Fuhrer Trump and Eva Stefanik and now Field Marshall Stec has joined in.
Thank you, Will. Your voice--tone, clear thinking, kindness and caring--is quite wonderful. I've missed it and am glad you are back with your column on Sunday. First sorry about your physical pain..which is never easy for any of us. And second,, thank you for your thoughts on our community, on people walking their dogs and being generous and kind and friendly. I feel that very much, but I also, like you, fear for our democracy which feel endangered through intentional lies, misinformation, violence..It is not a question of Conservative vs. Liberal (I actually welcome different points of view, debates over real issues) but, for me, of Democracy vs. autocracy, Fascism, conspiracy theories--following a "leader" who wants control, who threatens dissent, and a party that is subservient to his power and will. Those who accuse the 2020 election of being rigged, a "stolen election," are now a large part of the Republican base. These election deniers are running for office now, and are quite open about their willingness to "steal this election," and the right wing Christian extremist are quite open about making our country a Christian fundamentalist country. Hearing McCarthy, Scott, Marjorie Taylor Greene... speak about what they will do if they win house and senate terrifies me. So i do love community and find good neighbors everywhere, but i sometimes think of Mussolini and Hitler slowly gaining power and control and find it hard to not think of some of my good neighbors as complicit in allowing the loss of what is so precious. Thanks again for your words,
"The antidote is getting out and about and seeing other human beings.... we can heal only through demanding in our politics the common decency we take for granted everywhere else." As I embark on my eightieth trip around the sun, I am less confident that we will ever return to that time. I'm afraid that those of my generation have lived through the best of times that our forefathers had hope that this country would achieve. The middle class expanded to a point where they could take pride in their achievements to only see it torn down over the last 40+ years. I hope I'm wrong, BUT.... I'll leave it there.
On the flip side & lower back problems Will. My chiropractor suggested an inversion table for my lower back problems, it seems to be working better than I anticipated, this is only a suggestion, link is for the one I purchased for under $130 incl tax & shipping. It was an assembly challenge. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QCI4GG?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

So great to hear from you again. Glad to see Bella seems to be holding her own. Hope you heal quickly.

How come everything you say seems so logical and true, yet so many people will dismiss what you wrote just because you wrote it
