There has never been as malign a force with the reigns of power as we have now. Far too many folks are in denial about what is in plain sight, even though it was written down.

You've been "reading my mail." I awaken every morning with that knot in my stomach when I sit down with my coffee to catch up on the news in this frightening time. But we must stay informed and live with resolve to push back. My concerns are with the local immigrant population here in Washington County and the LGBTQ population. The members of those communities live among us. I have a beautiful and loving trans grandchild who I will go to the ends of the earth to support. And I fear for the world my other two grandchildren will inherit.

I totally understand. My daughter is older, (38), but I still fear daily for the state of her *being*.

She's out in Oregon - much better environment than upstate NY !

I too would go to the ends of the earth for her and for the rights of your grandchild. You are not alone.

I just don't even begin to understand the problem people have with the trans community - especially the *Christian * population.

When I see transphobic comments or witness behavior, I call it out publicly. I won't stand for it.

Bottom line- we are ALL human beings.

Yes we are all human beings, but specifically we in the USA are all members subject to the rule of law and as such we are all entitled to protection of a government which is subject to consent of all of the people. Some people call that “woke.” I call it Thomas Jefferson.

Morning Ken....Can't "deal" with the politics this morning...However, I have my PHD in nutrition and diet after 3 bouts with cancer and one heart attack. Google low fat diets and start educating yourself. I found nutritionists don't really have a clue and everyone is a little different. Listen to your body and you'll be fine. Happy Wednesday.

Not trying to be argumentative, and I did do what you suggested... but I also am aware of the fact that not all advice from the internet is valuable... did find

Low-Fat Foods

There are plenty of low-fat whole foods to choose from, including:1

Egg whites*

Fruits

Grains, such as rice, oats, pasta, and cereal

Lean meats and fish

Legumes, such as peas, beans, and lentils

Low-fat milk

Part-skim cheeses

Vegetables

Maybe stir up the yolks for your dog?? I have a female Cedar Wax Wing - SHE gets 2 hard-boiled egg yolks in her breakfast of softened dog kibble which I mix up about once a week - I eat the whites so I guess thats a good thing! I just cant see throwing them away altho they really arent the tastiest "delicacies". Actually looking at that list of lo-fat foods - I guess I dont do too badly in my diet.

A nutritionist would give you all kinds of lists of things you should/could eat as well as things to avoid. Mary Ellen said it perfectly---not only is each person a nutritionist sees different....people are people and you can't solve every condition the same way. A lot of it has to do with what you are willing to change and there are those who simply say they can't change. YOU, Ken, are not in that group. Yes, Googling low fat diets is a great way to start. Look at labels, start with the basics. In fact, you really are the PERFECT person to do this sort of research...for yourself! And remember, it's just FOOD, "good stuff!!"....as unadulterated as possible with processing.

Ken Tingley's avatar

Thanks for the encouragement Barbara. I have become a religious reader of nutrition labels, although I often am trying to figure out if low fat, high sugar is better than high fat, low sugar.

Expand full comment
Maggie's avatar

I get stuck reading the sodium content in the store aisles.

I do wonder - why is the healthier food (less salt/sugar) more expensive than the heavily processed stuff? Seems to me that not putting it in in the first place would cost less than removing? it?

Expand full comment
Ken Tingley's avatar

While I have done much of that research, there is a question of degrees and how strict. Generally speaking I think I already eat a pretty healthy diet, so it is a question of degrees. Do I worry more about fats or sugars? How many grams of fats are acceptable in a day? Since I have no synptoms currently it is hard to judge any reaction to the new diet. Some professional advice would be nice, but like so many things these days, we often have to go it alone.

Good morning, Ken and all. I am at a stage of "half the voters chose to live under sheer chaos and irrationality, bring awful consequences upon them." However, we will suffer too. Many smart people are wondering why the current administration is acting as though a reasonable human had been elected next president. Biden, Jeffries, Schumer, Pelosi must be able to fo something. That is, once they stop thinking about how to protect themselves from "trump." I fear that good young congress people will consider not running for reelection in two years. The uncertainty brought by the new administration will mess up our thriving economy.

On a different note,

I took Mary Ellen's advice and googled this for you. AI can be useful. Make simple changes.

regarding health care...fend for yourself has been the order of the day since Regan. I have needed medical attention since I was a kid. I've been in the hospital more times than I care to count, and what I've learned, if your are in acute danger, you get attention, if not, get in line...I have no answer as to why with our current abilities we are not training more health care PROVIDERS instead of insurance company shills. Improved Medicare For All for HR 676 is a master piece of legislation and it saves everyone money and makes health insurance illegal. If you remember , until Regan, Blue Cross Blue Shield was run as a not for profit, and I was told that they didn't know what to do with all that dough. My daughter was born in a hospital in 1984 and the bill was for 700.00, and we thought it outrageous at the time. HMOs were supposed to save us all, and here we are. We a re becoming a self check out world, and the funny thing is, the medical profession don't like insurance companies either. An industry without a product......

Every elected federal government official is required to swear an oath of office. It is in the Constitution, and yet almost nobody in government or in the courts seem to think that the oath of office is a functioning set of words with meaning. If there was no meaning or importance why would the founders waste the ink and paper to write it down? Why do we have the ritual of swearing the oath in public? Remember when Justice Roberts screwed it up (like so much else he screws up in his court decisions) at the Obama swearing in? They went back to do it again later … because it has meaning.

And yet Donald Trump clearly violated the oath of office repeatedly. By law, custom, and the intent of the founders he cannot serve as president. We know his oath has no power over his actions.

So, he is an illigitimate president under no restraint.

Buckle up.

Trump is no Lincoln or Roosevelt. If you really want to fear his invocation of Marshall Law, consider this:

"For over a decade, tens of thousands of people living in Syria would disappear without explanation. They were picked up off the street. Plucked from university classes. Yanked out of stores as they bought groceries, and from taxis on their way home from work...Relatives were never told what had happened." NYT 12/11/2024

Even without an invocation of the Insurrection Act, that is what may soon be happening to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of refugees in this country as Trump pursues their illegal deportation.

Fear him. Really fear him.

You’re not crazy, Ken…but be prepared…the world of American journalism just hit a new low.

Time Magazine selected Trump as their “Person of the Year”…🫣

I wonder which billionaire bought that selection?

The Time staffer who announced it on the Today Show tried to justify that it’s a person who influences our world “for better or for worse…”

What a crock. Time should lose their publication rights for celebrating and further inflating the already bloated ego of our homegrown presidential-Terrorist.

Actually, Trump was named person of the year in 2016 as well, but so were Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin. Time's pick reflects a person's impact on world events so it does not have to be in a positive way.

Certainly the news media reports of the January 6th "hostages" being pardoned and released and then having his Justice Department go after the Congressional leadership that endeavored to go the Impeachment route and charge them for who knows what criminal acts certainly does raise a front and center red flag. Definitely are the times that our souls. Keep trying to remind myself that a democratic election has brought us this reality, but even that notion doesn't alleviate my concerns! Nor does the notion that Trump will actively work to promote his

choices for the top military positions. A Trump loyalty oath appear to be a key factor for his second term.
