Love the recap of such a humble person as Glenn Merkosky. No wonder why he was so loved.
Onto the fire arm bill passing, what happens if you have a firearm on you and you’re sober but then you’re drinking or drugging and don’t know the difference that you’re high or drunk? It’s up to you to drop the firearm? Seems like such a silly worded bill. Why not just oppose having any firearm on you at any time in a public location?
It doesn’t seem so silly to me! Being drunk or high is not and has never been a legal excuse for bad behavior. Essentially, if you are carrying a weapon and are drunk or high but otherwise behaving yourself, you will more likely than not get away with breaking this new law. If you drive, cause a ruckus, get into a bar fight, etc, you will have some added legal woes. I hope the penalty is onerous enough so maybe before stepping out for a night on the town, folks might think twice about packing that heat. That would be a good thing.
Personally, I couldn’t care less if all guns were outlawed at all times; I don’t like them, I have never owned one, and I think the world would be better off without them. But I recognize that many people, for many reasons, don’t feel as I do, and they have that right.
Great column to read back on Christmas 1993 and an equally great read today! Glenn Merkosky was and is a Glens Falls treasure. Such a nice guy and great family!

Looking forward to reading it.
