Frost knew exactly what he was doing. He knows damn well that he publishes in red MAGA upstate NY and he knows who his readers are. He's an ad salesman first and a journalist second (that is, if journalism is defined as writing each week about how incredibly busy he is and promoting his sons' careers).
Another thought - maybe he knew that most of his right leaning readers are more likely to pick up the print version at some rural outpost, and those readers are less likely to be digital subscribers. How convenient - two versions of the story for two versions of readers.
The Chronicle is worth exactly what he charges for it, and not a penny more.
In fact, I don't think he even likes Trump, but he's keenly aware that any commentary that could be construed as criticism of Dear Leader would likely sink his paper.
Would it? We have a lot of Democrats in Glens Falls, and as the protest showed, a lot of people upset by Trump. I think he could show courage without sacrificing his business. I'm guessing his prevarications have more to do with specific advertisers who are strongly pro-Trump
It would be great to see him display that courage instead of the contorted gymnastics of straddling both sides of the fence. But when you drive ten miles to the north, west, or east of Glens Falls I wouldn't guess there are a lot of Democrats, whether they're advertisers or readers. I submit Elise Stefanik as Exhibit A.
"..., written by Mark Frost,..." was all that was needed to interpret a peaceful protest of a tyrant as "jovial." I suppose Mr. Frost is "jovial" at the bombing of a sovereign nation without Congress' approval? It was done in peacetime, ya know.
A picture is worth a thousand words. So being the recycling nut that I am, my reaction to the paper thrown in the garbage that makes a good point that would be missed if it was sitting in the recycling bin.
I don't read The Chronicle at all anymore. I attended the No King's Rally along with my fellow members of The Northeast Light Brigade, and the enthusiasm was exhilarating! One white truck drove past us and a lady was in the back of the truck giving the finger to everyone. Didn't change anything, actually exhilarated things more. Her life must be so depressing. What a shame. There will be more rallies in the future. Hope to see you there!
At the No King's Rally in Colonie, whenever the finger was given to the crowd the response was "have a nice day" which likely infuriated those vulgar people.
I have followed the Glens Falls political scene for years. Mark Frost's perspective regarding government and politics and Dana Palmer's commitment to her community and beyond couldn't be more evident.
Thank you for your comments on Frost. Journalists pandering to this regime is obviously becoming the standard. Freedom of the press has been demolished. It won’t rehabilitate itself unless the American public demands it.
...This reader agrees entirely with your reading of the Frost front page propaganda. Taking the "Chronicler" to task for his article, whatever one's politics, is not only appropriate, but necessary. Publicly insinuating a falsehood has to be, publicly, called out. As soon as I read the bilious persiflage, it struck me as: intentionally misleading. This is the opposite of good journalism-writing. Twisting the facts, in a newspaper no less- and by its founder-editor?, to slander a perceived adversary, the "detestable" Democrat-Liberals, to align with one's [inexplicable] worldview is twisted: and demeans not his target but only the one twisting himself into [k]nots. Thank you for publicly, and passionately, pointing this out.
The Chronicler is not alone - so many times headlines are directly opposite to what an article is actually saying. Too many people now only take in the headline!
Good column on all points but I was particularly struck by Richard Carella’s poem.
I’ve met and heard a lot of candidates for public office, Diana Palmer has a grasp of issues grounded in personal competence, intelligence, and thorough knowledge of the needs of the city of Glens Falls and its residents. She seems to be seeking office out of a sincere desire to serve, to prepare the city for longterm stability. It really seems like her motivation is service backed by personal competence, and seemingly not a drop of ego.
People like Diana Palmer don’t just show up here, they make an informed choice.
Edit: I neglected to mention that Diana listens to people, I mean REALLY listens! It’s a skill.
Frost’s sickening, twisted false narrative re: the actual witnessed events in GF last weekend, whether the digital or paper version, is deplorable. Thanks for shining a light on his dark motives of pleasing paid advertisers. Truth-telling…which potentially could offset the lies perpetuated by FOX-Toxic TV, which are ingested whole by many North Country Trumpers…will never be a part of Frost’s insatiable need to please his GOP-based admirers.
Frost failed to dispute Stefanik’s verbal abuse of still-captive Gaza hostages, and still-living area Holocaust survivors who were true hostages of Hitler’s regime. That Stefanik called convicted felon January 6th perpetrators “HOSTAGES”…was indefensible. Frost’s refusal to criticize her abhorrent stance, considering his own Jewish heritage, and personally knowing my now 101 yr. old friend, a still brilliant minded, tender-hearted Holocaust survivor who was a true hostage…was/is unforgivable.
I opted out of being a Chronicle digital subscriber within hours, after realizing I didn’t trust Frost with any of my personal information. I urge others to do the same. Our anonymous pick up of the paper version is safer in light of his not-so-subtle support of tyranny.
Will, I'm GOBSMACKED! YouVre fallen for Diana's whiney psychobabble rhetoric, and give scant credit to Bill Collins for his incredible work after prior administrations "kicked the can down the road" on important needs f the city. You regale Diana with her work on Webster street and the Murray Street playground...Sooo,what about Bill Collins leading the sewer replacement on Ridge Street, and WHAT ABOUT THE NEW ROAD SIDEWALKS AND CURBS ON DIX AVENUE OUT TO THE CITY BORDER????? I'm really upset with you for not thoroughly looking at Mayor Collins achievements. AND, Diana Palmer IS NOT what Glens Falls needs. Bill Collins came into a MESS and went to work cleaning it up..and, of course, it upset people. Glens Falls has no structure left after the recession and the pandemic, and he set about rebuilding City Halll. Diana says she's a Democrat...READ her interview on the Chronicle...She's for "smaller govenrment" and a more libertarian approach to government.. Soo what is she??? Republican??? Libertarian??? She IS NOT A DEMOCRAT!
If you pay attention to Bill, all the infrastructure works are in process, as he continues to state.
You're upset about a flooded drain? That's for you to take up with your Councilman....NOT blame Bill! If she's elected, we'll get just what we deserve...nothing but discussions, meetings, and chaos.
This is an amazing, accurate, clear and concise endorsement for Diana-and I thank you for it. Diana has earned her chops in her 8 years as an active, committed, smart, sensible councilwoman and it is high time to get her into role as Mayor. It is time for a leader who is strategic and understands the big picture and responds with an actual plan. She doesn't make up budget numbers, or say people in our community are "failing at life". Diana is fiscally responsible, while ALSO caring deeply about our community and coming up with real, actionable solutions for our growing cities problems. Interesting all this conversation about her status as Democrat, esp. considering Collins is endorsed by the Conservative party (Trump, Stefanik anyone?!?!? same line right?) Nowhere does she claim to she wants to change the cities government, she just wants it run more efficiently and with more transparency and taxpayer input...sounds just like a true Democrat to me. Can't wait for Tues. Thank you Will.
Diana really has a deep commitment to Glens Falls and to all its constituents. She has worked tirelessly to suggest new approaches and policies that the Council has voted down, given a certain partisanship.
As a Queensbury resident, I whole-heartedly support Diana for Mayor, and I’m sure many others of ToQ agree. Wish we had a vote!
Thank you for saying what I’ve been thinking all along! How many meetings do we need before we make decisions. And what will we owe the big developers who have supported her? They do not give money without wanting something back. It has to be water and sewer. I’m sick of hearing about trees and recreation for kids. I want something for me and I don’t see anything in her plan for me.
I, as a 40 year taxpayer in this city, have a dog in this fight. I’ve paid over $10,000 for tree removal over the years, my trees and the city’s. I want something for my generation now, and we got nothing. I want wonderful, affordable apartments and available parking. Diana does not talk about this. I am NOT selfish! I just want my next few years to be better for my husband and I.
“Diana's whiney psychobabble rhetoric” - that seems like quite mean-spirited vitriol for a local city race.
Some people may not like me pointing this out, but it is true - Bill has taken the conservative party line (this is the line of Donald Trump and Elise Stefanik). He is swearing allegiance to a party that’s diametrically opposed to the Democratic parties values (just consider the differences between them on women’s issues and LGBTQ+ issues). What will he owe to the Conservative Party leaders who gave him a spot on that line? Diana Palmer on the other hand has a track record of working hard for her constituents regardless of party and fighting for progressive values in City Hall and in public, including the examples linked below and I remember when Diana was part of many more instances like Womens marches and events:
Claudia, Diana’s biggest contributors are Trump supporters. Is she in bed with them? She is not and neither is Bill. She would have loved that line but he got it first! I lose more respect for you everyday. Be better, do better!
I’m sorry that you’ve lost respect for me over my staunch support of a strong woman for Glens Falls Mayor. I appreciate the opportunity to provide facts for other readers who are interested. Diana has constructions from people of all parties including former Democratic Congressman Scott Murphy and his family.
You can check the NYS Board of Elections website for the campaign filings. Here’s a summary of how Diana’s campaign is doing better than Bill’s in terms of dollars.
Total contributions (1/1 to 5/19)
Palmer $34,492
Collins $10,620
Number of contributions
Palmer 192
Collins 56
Number of Glens Falls residents donating
Palmer 93
Collins 24
Range of contribution amount
Palmer $5 to $1000
Collins $25 to $650
p.s. Diana never wanted the Conservative Party line. Dems far outnumber Cons. in GF.
I read the digital version of the Chronicle for two reasons: 1)I don’t always remember to pick one up when I’m out and about, and he does print a pretty extensive listing of upcoming events and local activities, and 2)It’s good to read and learn what people I don’t necessarily agree with are thinking. I find reading the Chronicle easier than watching Fox news, which I also occasionally force myself to do.
I enjoy poetry, I read more poetry than many (but likely not as much as Mr. Doolittle_
I write poetry...
One of the great things about poetry, one never knows what the reader will think. Often s/he only sees the poem from their perspective... their context.
One of the thing that that Carella poem reminds me of... trees (people) fall (die), but let's not forget so many more survive..
The local No Kings Rallies here in central MA were well organized and well attended with incredible solidarity and positive energy. Our local paper also tried to subtly down play crowd size and enthusiasm and try to placate local Trump supporters but luckily the pictures told the full story and many of them were displayed across the front page.

I have not read that paper since my last cat died 10 years ago. It made great kitty pan liner, as I am sure that is its sole purpose.
In fact, I don't think he even likes Trump, but he's keenly aware that any commentary that could be construed as criticism of Dear Leader would likely sink his paper.

Speaking of straddling both sides, if I am not mistaken, I believe Mark used to be a registered Democrat in the early 1980’s.
Not that it’s wrong to change political parties, but I wonder what the draw was to change enrollment and ideology$
Fantastic edition, Will.

Seriously - I have no dog in this fight - not from your particular area, BUT "sick of hearing about trees and recreation for kids"?
From the top down, in this current climate - wanting something for ME has become how Americans seem to be acting in too many - far too many - cases.
I cannot imagine saying or typing that kind of message. I thought our country was better than that - I thought that WE were better than that.
I guess, as Will says, we cant agree on everything.

He's been doing this kind of thing for decades. I pick up a Chronicle when it's time to wash my windows.
In my recent conversation with Mark, he said he did not read your substack news.
Ah well.
Sounds like he should be!
When Frost endorsed Stefanik the last time around we had words and we haven't spoken since.
He is of course entitled to his opinion. I'm entitled to ignore his paper that caters to his right wing causes and adoration of criminality.
