Unless there's a "great awakening" causing voters (and the mass of people who are eligible to but don't vote) to have a multiple occurrences nationwide of the Million Man March , we're forked. Where's Howard Beale when we need him?
Your sobering statements on what Trump and his cronies and thugs have wrought upon America are spot on.
With even all that there's Pam Bondi stating that her department will come after protesters at Tesla dealerships. Or Rubio canceling the contract with Yale University's research lab that was tracking Russia's kidnapping of Ukrainian children and unilaterally deciding that foreign born persons, even those that are legally here, who criticize Trump or his MAGA movement should be arrested and deported. Or RFK, Jr. once again implying that vaccines cause autism as he promotes a brand of hamburgers. Or Noem requiring Canadians be registered when they enter if they plan to stay for more than 30 days. Or Hegseth removing references to accomplishments of women, Blacks, LGBTQ and Hispanics from DOD sites, such as Arlington National Cemetery. Or Musk's DOGE Backpack Boys canceling leases, contracts and funding for scientific research, historical sites, federal offices and buildings.
Democrats are failing in finding and taking a unified stance or even a voice to oppose these corrupt and destructive actions. Republicans stand by and obediently applaud as Trump destroys American democracy and institutions such as the Kennedy Center and altering America's history.
One sign of hope though, is that more and more loud and peaceful protests are taking place with people challenging their elected officials. But, I wonder, will it be enough to halt the dark trajectory that the Trump Administration is sending America down?
We all lived through the GWB administration where he simply defined a million protesters as a focus group, then set up “free speech zones” to confine protests away from his events.
Not that there is no value in mass protest. They give heart to people here and in foreign countries that we are not all complete jerks.
And perhaps in 599 days there will be a massive change at the ballot box, but at 53 days in to this administration the damage done already is, really, incomprehensible.
I do hope that you are not suggesting violent protests? Because, one thing is for sure, Trump & his thugs are waiting just for that moment to declare martial law or implement the Insurrection Act.
but --- that said... you take away enough rights from people, take away their social security.. their medicare... increase the cost of living ... you take away a person's reason to live..
as CJ Box's character Joe Pickett ogten says: "things are going to get western real fast."
Money talks. Boycotts work if enough people participate to make them feel it in the wallet. What I’m looking for is some way to keep track of what corporations are collaborating or taking advantage of the lack of regulation, and which ones are continuing to be responsible even if they are not being forced to be.
Ugh, then I’d have to watch it long enough to figure out who they are! I do watch it occasionally for a short time just to see what they’re putting out there. Right now, as you could probably guess, everything is coming up roses and if there’s anything wrong it’s Biden’s fault.
It probably won't mean much until Trump voters start joining in. Since Congress has essentially abdicated its budget responsibility, what exactly are they representing us in doing???? Musk should send them all pink slips.
The left has fallen for the trap of the culture wars, which was always a distraction from the looting of the nation and the destruction of the regulatory state. It’s the pocketbook issues that motivate most voters. The left continually fails to effectively connect on economics.
I don't know that you in particular have done "wrong" except for your delusion that Wade Boggs was the best hitter of his generation. It would be more interesting to hear what you think "moderates in the middle" have done to get the US to the place where it currently is.
I worked for Republican candidates -- in particular, for John Lindsay, a New York congressman who successfully ran for mayor of NYC in 1965. At 18, unable to vote before the 26th Amendment, I worked for months in his campaign for reelection in the Republican primary in June 1969 in my neighborhood. Not only did he lose the Republican primary to State Sen. John Marchi, but when we came to the office the next day someone had scrawled "N----- Lover" on our storefront's front door. I remember trying to wash off the paint or whatever it was while I was crying. But I continued to work for Lindsay, who won in November on the Liberal Party line.
The only Republican I worked for after that was Sen. Lowell Weicker in 1988 because I hated the sanctimonious, Uriah Heep-like Joe Lieberman. I handed out Weicker leaflets at Grand Central Terminal to morning commuters coming off the trains from Connecticut. Weicker lost reelection to Lieberman but later was elected Governor as an independent.
But I've always been a radical. My favorite political song is Tyler, the Creator's "Radicals."
Acutally, I would choose Derek Jeter, or maybe a little earlier Rod Carew. And you probably can't shortchange Pete Rose.
My belief is a moderate course of action is much more palatable to most people than the extremes on either side. I used to think it was 20-20-60 split, but it may be more 40-40-20 these days.
Ad hominem attacks reflect poorly on you. I employ transgender people…have them in my family. I create jobs and homes for those who need a hand up. Bark up another tree.
I deleted the comment. I was particularly enraged at Gavin Newsom on the transgender issue, and since you are both handsome and wealthy, I momentarily mistook you for him. My apologies.
This is a common refrain.. the chorus in a song about freedom.
Yes, it is a concern that voters care about their selfish interests.. mainly money.
Yes the left continually fails to effectively connect on economics.
But that is because issues aren not simply black and white (making whites hate blacks). They are nuanced and difficult. You can say Tariffs are bad.. but to explain why they are bad is not so simple.
That is true.
But to sell out personal freedoms.. because we want cheap eggs lacks morality and decency.
I get that it is hard to get elected if you don't become immoral as the republican party... but do we want to become an immoral country.
Should we say:
it is okay to be racist, if that wins the congress for democrats?
it is okay to be misogynist and never run a woman candidates so we can have a democrat president?
it is okay to not call out attacks on Jews a worthy price to pay so we can win?
It might be the way
the path to dems on top.
I want a country that has freedoms for all.
To call that "a culture war" is to give into the evils of the gQpedos party. It is not a culture war, it is not a war at all. It is the demise of freedom and democracy.
Edward, please don't misunderstand me. Human rights are universal, full stop. That should be the start and end of the "cultural" conversation. Everyone deserves the same treatment. But we are not living in that world, because we have lost the electorate -- or rather, lost enough to allow the electorate to be gerrymandered in favor of the minority.
But in order to reverse that, and the destruction that is coming, and the course we are on, we have to win elections overwhelmingly.
Please understand... I do not think you are against human rights.
I am saying if you take human rights out of the equation.. so you can succeed.
you are taking away human rights.
There was a guy who succeeded quite well in the 1940's because he did not engage in the culture war of : "are Jews and people of color deserving of rights."
He did a little bit too well.

One of the main reasons we defeated England in 1776 is because the colonies gained massive wealth from slave labor.
all peace should be wrapped in love of our fellow men (and women)
Edward, do you have a link that supports your claim “One of the main reasons we defeated England in 1776 is because the colonies gained massive wealth from slave labor.”
As you allude to in the reference to the Chamber of Commerce’s gathering at the Country Club, it is NOT a center/moderate organization. It is a cutthroat free-market capital organization founded to prevent workers from gaining power. Sure, they wear suits and top hats and keep a hanky to polish their monocles, but they are rarely on the side of ensuring just government powers by consent of the governed. They work to be a power behind puppet leaders.
And while it is great that David Brooks gives everything careful consideration after it is too late, many of us give consideration to the probable effects of bad policy before it advances. For that we get smeared as over-reacting, panicking.
Looking at the record, while millions of us formed an immediate opinion that the Iraq War of GWB was unjustified and irresponsible, David Brooks supported it. Perhaps we all “panicked”, but history shows we were absolutely correct, and GW Bush’s War on Terror led in a straight line to legal justification for torture (“enhanced interrogation”), abductions, black sites, Guantanamo Bay, and general subversion of the Constitution in ways that gave us the possibility of a Donald Trump for President.
Middle-of-the-Roadism is not thoughtful balance of all sides. It is, in fact, a brake on expanding justice.
I remember driving home to Indiana one Christmas and going through Cleveland and having to roll my windows up because the smell coming from the river that flowed into Lake Erie was so noxious.

but to be clear.. the Americans who voted for greed, selfishness, racism and bigotry.. were not just voting to be
