Another bogeyman Donald Trump repeatedly invoked was the press -- the "enemy of the people" as he put it. Interesting that the Republican Party is incapable of policing itself, while journalism has a history of doing so.
Historically, fascist movements try to eliminate ALL watchdogs. Academia and the press are always two of the first targets. Their absence or emasculation facilitates the rest of their agenda.
I feel we're moving past trump himself...I hope so anyways!
However.....look around locally at some candidates in office and running for office on the R ticket.
Stec - he is a lapdog for Stefanik. Him calling the inmates animals is trump rhetoric all the way. I believe that he's eyeing Stefaniks seat if she were to move on. And he appears to have her approval if that were the case.
Another guy running is Jeremy Messina - he's the R running against Carrie Woerner.
His social media is worse than Stefanik!
The derogatory comments about Ms. Woerners appearance are disgusting along with the misinformation he is putting out there.
He's a trump guy.
I'm a comment reader. I want to know who thinks what and often I'm shocked at the people I know who write awful things. But at least I know who to avoid and what business to not support.
Anyways, I feel as if we're in trump's Fat Elvis stage. Maybe people are finally tired of his sh** as it hasn't changed since he started campaigning back in 2015.
I voted for President Biden and except for his support of Israel and his initial comments on supporting them no matter what, believe he's been a good leader. I hope history remembers that.
I also voted for HRC . Was devastated when trump won - I'll never forget that moment.
And when Pelosi ripped up the papers on air - I cheered her on. She pushed back on trump and I'm grateful for that always.
I've been to the FB page of Jeremy Messina and I've read the comments and laugh emojis that various posters have made about Carrie. Disgusting. What is more disturbing is that candidate Messina allows them to remain on his FB page. If Messina were a decent person, he wouldn't tolerate that kind of speech on his page. Candidate Messina needs to stick to the issues and what he would do, if elected, to benefit the 113th AD.
I actually sent him a message because I thought he maybe wasn't aware...he removed many of my comments which included links to the many things Carrie has done.
I feel like any decent people left in the Republican Party feel like they can't get the nomination, even for low level office, without being a complete scumbag because Trumpist sociopathy has taken over the party. Someone like Matt Simpson tries to be the exception but he doesn't have the guts to stand up to Elise and Donald.
I've lost track of how many people I know who were lifelong Republican voters, traditional conservatives, who hate voting for Democrats but do these days just because they are not sociopaths.
My state Senator is Jacob Ashby, a newcomer I guess, because his name was not familiar to me when he ran for election. He is a Republican in the old sense. His newsletters are very positive, highlighting businesses and projects in the area, and even when he’s critical about something, he has been unfailingly respectful, sticking to policy. There has not even been a whiff of Trumpism. From what I’ve seen of him so far, I might even vote for him when he runs again, just to give old school Republicans courage!
Sadly, the reduction in the size of newspaper staffs has played a role in local people being less informed. Because of social media, I suspect they believe they are more informed.
The people proposing a sales tax increase better not complain about inflation. If approved, local residents like us will be paying the extra 1% year round. That will show up as price increases on most purchases less a few grocery items.
Thank you for writing about President Biden. He has done right by us more than twice, stepping up against Trump in 2020 and stepping aside to beat Trump this year. 👏👏👏👏
The Harris/Walz ticket has brought a great sense of relief and hope to all thinking beings in the entire country and abroad.
Mike the Flaming Liberal here to point out that the proposed sales tax increase in Warren county (and a matching one in Washington county) is being put forward by Republican supervisors.
In fact every single local tax hike for residents in this region in your lifetime was because Republicans proposed and/or voted for them, and yet Republican Hartford Supervisor Dana Haff is calling Warren County supervisors “Tax and Spend Liberals,” ignoring fellow GOP supervisors in Washington county.
Flaming Liberal Mike opposes this regressive and wholly unnecessary tax hike, pointing out that this proposal amounts to a 33.3% INCREASE in taxes. When was the last time you heard of an increase in taxes of 33.3%?
Worse, Republican Chair of the Board of Supervisors Kevin Geraghty readily admits there is no need for increased revenue at anywhere near this scale so he is proposing this increase that affects everyone - the homeless, retirees and people on fixed incomes, people who rent apartments - in order to give a tax cut to property owners including 2nd home and STR owners who do not live here, and lakefront property owners in million dollar residences.
This tax hike will add, for example, hundreds of dollars in tax to the purchase of your next car, but don’t worry, on most other big ticket items such as large appliances, furniture, riding lawnmowers, etc you can drive the short distance south to Saratoga county and save significantly. Of course that will reduce the sales for businesses in Warren county. In effect Republican supervisors in Warren county are proposing removing a competitive business advantage and hurting our business climate.
"Boring" Biden passed arguably the most consequential slate of legislation of any presidential term in 50 years, arguably longer. The Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act and its historic (and long overdue) investments in green energy, American Rescue Plan and the CHIPs bill to invest in high tech. I did not for one second expect much from him but the facts are there.
There is an art to getting Congress to do what you want them to do. I never thought of LBJ as a president, but when you read about his maneuverings as president, he ended up with an impressive body of work.
The Democratic convention starts in a week. The love that’s going to be expressed for President Biden, along with the ratings, is going to drive Trump even crazier. The joy from the campaign is affecting him as the Grinch was by the residents of Whoville. I’m not expecting his heart to grow 10 sizes, tho. He’s insanely saying the crowd at an airport to see Harris and Walz was AI generated.
It’s actually nice that Biden is going to be ranked 4 years sooner than he would’ve otherwise been by historians. And he’s got a really good presidency nearly completed (knocking wood). There’s much that can go wrong in second terms. It’s even more impressive that what he accomplished was in spite of an opposition that spent all their time looking to impeach him for nothing. How much money and time was spent harassing Hunter Biden?
Good start to the week when Heather Richardson pops up on YouTube. 🤩
Consider the possibility that people who used to be apolitical were motivated to vote because of Trump, both for and against.
A classic response from you, oblivious to the point that was made about ethics and accountability.
My work is done here.
Jeez, now I have to spend the rest of the day refreshing the page to discover what wisdom SP has to bestow upon us.
Another bogeyman Donald Trump repeatedly invoked was the press -- the "enemy of the people" as he put it. Interesting that the Republican Party is incapable of policing itself, while journalism has a history of doing so.
Yes, the "fake news" mantra. I suspect this had dome incalculable damage to our country.
Historically, fascist movements try to eliminate ALL watchdogs. Academia and the press are always two of the first targets. Their absence or emasculation facilitates the rest of their agenda.
Oh my... Tough way to start a Monday.

Women are the future. Let's give them a chance.

And that says everything I need to know about him!
I think you should trademark "Fat-Elvis stage" and sell T-shirts.

I think there are a lot of great old-school Republicans - Kevin Geraghty for one - who are still around, but the silence about Stefanik is deafening.
My state Senator is Jacob Ashby, a newcomer I guess, because his name was not familiar to me when he ran for election. He is a Republican in the old sense. It sure does feel that this hateful, venal and infantile spew is collapsing into itself. It will likely become more toxic as its power fades.
These pols wouldn’t exist if average voters weren’t such morons. They get dumber and dumber.

Flaming Liberal Mike says “Hard NO.”
Wow! Thanks, Ken!

Love the comparison to "Whoville."
I, too, subscribe to Heather Cox and Joyce Vance has a marvelous daily letter. Both are refreshing in their approach to reality.
I just hope and pray he doesn’t win.
