You may not like Ron DeSantis, but here’s what New York is doing regarding offshore wind power:

3 offshore wind projects nixed in New York

By Benjamin Storrow | 04/19/2024 01:47 PM EDT

It’s a major blow to New York’s climate plan and to President Joe Biden’s energy ambitions.

New York canceled power contracts for three offshore wind projects Friday, citing a turbine maker’s plans to scrap its biggest machines.

The news is a heavy blow to the U.S. offshore wind industry and a major setback for the climate ambitions of New York — and President Joe Biden. The three projects would have delivered 4 gigawatts of offshore wind to the state, amounting to almost half of New York’s 2035 goal.

NY is abandoning offshore wind. Besides, rich people with seaside homes will always try and block these projects.

It's a good point, especially since it seems NY bowed to big money in Long Island. Still, NY probably heading in a better direction than Florida.

I had dinner last week with my brother in law who lives in Florida, and being a curious sort of guy, I asked him how much his homeowner insurance was. Hi s home is similar in size and value as mine. 5,700 bucks a year was his answer (without flood insurance, that's another 2,700 that he does not carry). Amazing how with humans it has to come to dollars and cents and that the bleaching of the coral and 100º ocean water would be enough. No, it's not. Ever since Regan convinced the other half of the political spectrum that anything we do together is suspect, it has become impossible to look to a future where "we" have sober discussions regarding the future and what roll we individually and as a whole play in it. My homeowner's is about a grand or 20% roughly what he pays. Sorry I missed you last night in Cambridge!

My son lives in New Orleans so we fear the next big hurricane and if his insurance company will even survive. Many insurance companies have not survived in Louisiana or just left.

I wish it were a common cause but this tends to be again about money and regulations. Republicans don’t like regulations no matter how sensible and productive. Companies don’t like regulations because they cost money and put limitations in place. Also I don’t see the republicans being very future oriented unless it is about who will control what. There was a time when people wanted to make the earth a better place for their children and grandchildren. Now it is a political fight. Very difficult to comprehend.

Hard to believe it was Richard Nixon who established the EPA. For those of us who grew up with polluted rivers and waterways, we have come a long way. But probably not far enough.

Republicans want to deregulate big business, but regulate our personal lives—like, who we can love and marry; a woman’s personal health decisions; what we can and cannot read; who and when we worship; etc etc. etc.
