This poor woman. We have evolved into a world of bullies.:(

Sad but true. Boorish behavior abounds. Daily life has become a ritual of navigating a series of aggressions.

There used to be a respect between the newspaper and law enforcement. It was often uneasy, but maybe that’s the way it used to be. To show this lack of respect to a woman who devoted her life to the community is unconscionable.

That said, much of that has to do with newspapers not questioning police

1) Lake Placid Police were playing 'chicken' and crashed two cruisers. This story only unfolded when the village board heard rumors and investigated (reporters heard rumors, but did not investigate.. They did cover what the board said, but did not investigate

2) it was common to hear the Lake Placid Police -- if you had a police scanner -- trailing people of color (for the crime of being of color). Reporters knew this, but did not investigate.

3) In 2022 Police show a man (https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/46155/20220629/police-shot-and-killed-a-man-outside-stewart-s-in-saranac-lake-after-reported-stabbing) this was to be investigated by the state. A year later, it seems no newspaper or media outlet followed up on this story.

it is easy to get along with someone if you don't question them

I think it is a weird scenario, where lunatic gun nuts/right wing crazies feel the need to have conspiracies about government tyranny ..

When it seems the gQp is actually going after the freedoms of people they don't like.

• this story

• the election officials in Georgia

• look at ms.pggy.stefanikkk's social medai.. I guess she supports the police only when they are her henchmen, not when they enforce the law

It appears that is the case with the military also. She supports them when it suits her.

One of the things I fear is democrats have owned the lies.

Dems are willing to say, maybe shooting a mentally challenged black man night not be the right thing for police, but for a mental health professional -- which is not 'defunding the police' but saving society.

I am very annoyed with the gQp when they will attack police on Jan6, and now politicians are supporting the insurrectionists...

Republicans say it’s a mental health issue and then cut funding for that too. Dems need to start screaming from the rooftops to clarify their views. People are told on Fox that the most extreme represent the party which isn’t true.

This is a tough solution. I would bet you and I are as engaged as any 50 republicans.

A lot is watching fear tv - like fox ooan, newsmax, etc -- but there are so many people who work hard at atrophy of the brain.

It's so bad, I would get kicked off facebook for asking republicans if they ever read a book.

It's like #pos_tefanik taking credit for the Build Back Better that she voted against. I would bet that 60% of the people in ny21 (dems and repubicans) don't know what her voting record is

I have become an old man

Too often I have said or thought: "what is this world coming to."

Freedom is something politicians work to take away from us/not protect - our representatives.

Take this the step of this essay. Our leaders break the law, and when they are sued and have to pay for the legal costs.. it is the tax payers they miss-represent who foot the bill.

what is this world coming to.

1) let's accept there is no free press

2) just a dying breed of small press that clings to freedom

I was listening to an AM radio station, waiting for a baseball game to start. The announce was stumbling over himself to say.. even though all reports show this will be the hottest year on record, there isn't climate change. He kept saying it was a normal summer, but one where children need to cool off. (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-17/2023-is-already-on-track-to-be-the-hottest-year-ever-recorded)

This is not unusual.. that is to hear announcers on AM radio say this, mainly because most AM radio stations are owned by republican companies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IHeartMedia#News_talk_stations) with a right wing slant (agenda?)

We now live in a would where what 'you wanna believe' is okay, regardless of the facts

What a travesty and shameful behavior towards this poor woman in her home and at her newspaper office raid. All because of an angry, retributive business owner and her DUI record from the past which was not printed. The DA apparently thought this was a worthwhile raid to protect her friend. Incensed when I first read about it and now seeing this poor woman attempting to deal with the raid. Truly, unethical behavior by the DA and her friend.

Joan Meyer’s death is very sad. The thought of dying at 98 as a martyr is somehow appealing, tho. It beats many of the alternative ways of going.

I remember viewing this report on the internet and was disturbed with Mrs. Meyer's passing. I wondered how a newspaper office is arrested? Shouldn't the judge issuing the search warrant questioned the police why they depended on the testimony of the woman who was arrested for drunk driving and not an independent source for the complaint?

NPR's website 8/14 reported that this small town newspaper had been investigating allegations of prior misconduct against the Marion, Kansas police chief Gideon Cody, who just took over on June 1st. It was part of the newpaper's usual due diligence re: the candidacy of this police chief who had retired from another Kansas police dept. in April.

The newspaper's investigative reports on this prospective police chief were embodied within the confiscated newpaper company computers and other seized materials, along with the unpublished allegations re: the woman. This new police chief apparently tried to sue the newspaper prior to the "raid"... which created a traumatic and deadly ambush of this brave elderly woman journalist who did her best to stand her ground while the raiders rifled through her home/business office.

God Bless and may God bless her soul for standing up for what she thought was right and in so doing she most probably dies because of the stress it was putting on her heart at the time, passing in a mid statement. After it would seem a rather too long time frame her equipment was returned to her office. Another sad case of over use of power from my point of view.
