If you were familiar with Will’s life story from his weekly essays I believe you might be less critical of his admission that he hadn’t prioritized getting the paperwork done.
I am quite familiar with Will’s weekly essays. I know his life is challenging. I feel for him. But we need his vote. It’s not that hard to change one’s registration.
In light of all the levels of responsibility you’ve shouldered to ensure 24/7 comprehensive care of Bella and her progressive dementia all these years, the not-remembering to change your political party designation was a human lapse - not a sign of neglect or “stupidity.” And your choice as a journalist to protect your right to privacy as a voting citizen was a conscientious one at that time.
I’m glad you got a time-out to take in the splendid sky show on a warm summer evening. Many of our cloud formations from dawn to dusk these past weeks have been like looking up at a huge mural in an artists’ gallery. A slow moving visual meditation to take our minds off our earthly worries. The simple act of looking upward can provide brief respites when we least expect them.
Sometimes I forget whether I took a shower yesterday on my every other day showering schedule. Did you know you can change your voter enrollment online? If you scroll down a little there's a link to a portal. https://elections.ny.gov/voter-registration-process#register-online
With any luck, Robert Smullen will divert some votes. He’s still got the Conservative ballot line. God knows there’s nothing conservative about Trumpism.
Tubby Tony made the big time. He’s featured in this Daily Show clip last night.
saw that: "How could hmpy trmPEdp endorse a guy who looks like he isn't allowed in pet stores"

I've had a sign in my yard for Blake since he started his run for the special seat. It was buried in snow for several months (I'm a newbie to yard signs and didn't follow the wisdom of my neighbors who stored there's in the garage once the snow started). But I was ready to go get a sign and proclaim my support for Stuart if he'd managed an upset. We need all hands on deck.
You were not alone. I worked the polls in our town and we had several come in from both parties who found out they were not registered. One man was persistent, but it turned out he had changed his registration too late for it to be effective. They have deadlines for a reason you know. I was getting ready to call the police on him but he did back down after awhile. Everyone else took it in stride with the attitude "see you in November". This was my first time. It was a good experience. I will do it again. But Will, I encourage you to register with a party so you have a say on who gets nominated. I am glad I did. I for one never diss anyone over their political philosophy, but I do question when the back a criminal like Trump. He is not like the traditional Conservatives that I have known all my life. But I guess I got off topic.
...thank you for this / your switch to "not enrolled in any party" was reasonable; yes, to Backing B,G., now / I consider myself unaffiliated, but tend to vote for candidates of one party / -used to vote for the occasional [local] Republican, but, for obvious reasons: do not see myself voting for any of them ever again...
Will, we might be -- journalistically speaking -- twin sons of different mothers (credit to Dan Fogelberg and Dave Mason, I believe, for their music album by that name) for being a true independent. I purposely didn't enroll in a political party once I knew journalism would be a career. I didn't need any of the rabid politicos of various parties to add partisanship to my other perceived faults.
I'll share one story: After covering my first Schenectady City Council meeting for the then-Schenectady Gazette, I introduced myself to all the elected officials. The council president, let's call him Thomas, introduced himself, and his second question was wanting to know my party enrollment. When I hesitated to answer, he said I might as well tell him because he could find out on his own.
Mind you, it was a heavily Democrat-majority council/mayor and their party faithful in appointed positions. And Thomas and his extended family were hugely popular throughout the city and county; he historically received even more votes than any mayoral candidate in elections.
Thomas seemed taken aback by my response and wanted to know my reasoning for no enrollment. Without hesitating this time, I told him I hated both politics AND politicians, so there'd be no partisanship on my part. All the councilmen (yep, all white males) froze while Thomas tried to respond. I dared to cross the line with their dear leader. LOL.
Thomas recovered soon enough to tell me that I was to call him for comment on all topics -- minor or major, hard news or features -- related to city government.
I was an election clerical worker in Columbia County on Tuesday and I can tell you that you were not alone. I didn't keep count but can say that there was a steady trickle of persons who learned that they had never indicated a party on their registration. We gave them a registration form to fix it.
(crist there are so many, but sadly she also succeeded at too many evil things)
Moving the state to open primaries is one of them.. or maybe not. (this assumes that pos_tfnKKK has any influence in the party, which I don’t believe she does.
My party affiliation story. In New York State, if I recall right, I have been: a democrat, a republican and an independent (maybe that was Green Party). I was an independent for one cycle, thinking I would be able to vote for anyone (in a primary) since I was ‘independent’ and not holding to either of our two-party system (in theory we have multiple parties, but there are only two.
That is when I found out there are never more than one person running as an independent or Green Party. So I could never vote. For a short time I became a republican since I thought if we are going to be a red state, I want the best republican running. Like the independent line... often there is only one choice for the republicans (the rnc party often makes sure anyone but the one they want).
If there was an open primary voters could vote for who ever they wanted and the top two would run against each other in November. This would give voters a real choice, no matter what their affiliation. I don’t think it would change how republicans vote... they seem to be the party of goose stepping as in red or dead. I find that democrats and independents, and a little the Green Party... look at who is best.. or maybe have the best chance of winning AND reflect their ideas.
Now... all that said and looking at the numbers for NY21
Genbebien = 9,753 Amoriell= 5,193 Write in (Schmidt) = 62
constantino 26,565 Smullen = 18,028 Write in (Schmidt) = 216
In an open primary... I am fairly sure the two candidates would be constantino and Sullen... and if Schmidt didn’t have to jump through so many more hoops to be an independent AND was on the ballot would have gotten more votes..
Perhaps some sensible democrats would change their vote...There aren’t many sensible republican voters so not many would have voted differently.
Did you change your registration to Democrat yet? If not, why not? If not yet, how about doing it today? Thank you for your attention to this matter.
If you were familiar with Will’s life story from his weekly essays I believe you might be less critical of his admission that he hadn’t prioritized getting the paperwork done.

Especially with the way Will ended his piece your question seems the logical thing to ask.
I was going to write. "And so you went right out and registered Democrat, right?"
"We" already have Will's vote, that's been apparent for a long time. And he'll enroll as a Democrat at his own time and method.

It was a good, if unintended, test of the voting system. And the system worked properly.
Good job! And thanks!
Now do Jean Lapper. No more Good 'ol Boys.
And all other Dem/independent candidates for Q town board.

That was hysterical. Needed those laughs
Wise decision! FINALLY, there is a good probability District 21 will go Blue!
Hogan,Brandt,Van Ness,Lapper, Queensbury deserves better ! The Dorset neighborhood.

“Open primaries” would allow the unaffiliated to participate in their governing process.
The effective “single party” rule in many of the north country communities just might stay conservative but be less MAGA.
Open Primaries and ranked choice voting with a none of the above option. Then we’d see some change, maybe!
No surprises here…. Unfortunately. 🤬
