By Ken Tingley
I was shocked the first thought even crossed my mind.
When my sister-in-law suggested we go see a Doors tribute band in Hudson Falls Saturday night, I hesitated. We had tried out a new restaurant in South Glens Falls on Friday and we were scheduled to go to the theater in Glens Falls Sunday night.
“Going out Saturday night,” I thought to myself, “would be three nights in a row. We probably should rest up.”
“When did I get that old?” I thought, reversing course.
Was this one of the repercussions of the pandemic? We were OK to venture to the grocery store and an occasional restaurant, but three days in a row was just asking for trouble.
But we did it.
On Friday, we ventured across the river to Common Roots in South Glens Falls. We had not been there before the fire, nor since they finished rebuilding. What we found was good food, a pleasant summer atmosphere with an outdoor courtyard and great drinks. We will be back.
Then on Saturday we pushed the envelope with an acquaintance suggesting we visit the renovated Strand Theater in Hudson Falls to see the Doors tribute band (Feast of Friends). I was a little worried about being in a crowded theater and whether we would be able to get a seat.
Unfortunately for the Strand, there were less than 50 people at the performance for a great band and a lead singer who did Jim Morrison proud. It was too bad more people didn’t get to see it.
The Strand has an entire lineup of musical acts for rest of the summer. If you have not been to the theater since the restoration, you will shocked at its new look.
Finally, on Sunday evening we made our way to our traditional summer haunt for an Adirondack Theater Festival play at the Wood Theater.
For the first time, we were carded at an event. Not to see how old we were, but to make sure we were vaccinated. We were appreciative, but unfortunately the venue was only about half full for a fun comedy.
It was a big weekend for us.
We visited three places in three different counties and I went grocery shopping too. Maybe that explains why I slept over eight hours Sunday night.
After reading the news about the reluctance of so many people to get vaccines, I’m glad we went. We may not have that opportunity by the time fall comes around.
Strand events
Leaving the Strand Theater Saturday night we were handed a sheet of paper with all their events through August 20.
Between July 6 and August 20 the theater had scheduled more than 40 events.
Hudson Falls could be the center of the music scene in the future.
If you are one of those folks who claim there is nothing to do, check this out.
Another review
This is what former Post-Star sportswriter Michael Lewis is saying about “The Last American Editor:”
“Ken Tingley is one of the best newspaper journalists I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. For decades he’s had his finger on the pulse of small-town America, and his writing conveys depth, warmth and common sense that many columnists fake but don’t truly possess. “The Last American Editor is a terrific book filled by a writer who gets it.”
