Evening Update
Saturday, March 27, 2021
By Ken Tingley
I’ve been writing this newsletter for six weeks now, and I’m still trying to figure out exactly what it is.
I think my strength as a writer is tapping into personal feelings and observations that many others share. But after four decades in the newspaper game, I’ve gotten pretty good at boiling down complicated issues to their essence, so I’ve been doing some of that, too.
My recent writings probably mirror my past writings in that I choose a subject that has gotten my attention.
Perhaps the best part about the last six weeks is connecting with old acquaintances and past readers. If you like what you have read, I hope that you will share the newsletter with others and ask them to subscribe. Leave comments, too. Every writer wants an audience.
It’s been fun to talk and write about sports again - I did spend the first 20 years of my newspaper career in sports - and JG3 has made a welcome subject during this long winter. I saw almost all his high school games, and this past year I saw just about every college game, so I think I’m getting to be something of an expert.
I enjoyed sharing the odyssey in Plattsburgh to be vaccinated, and I found myself running out to snap a photo from time to time just like I did before I retired.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has limited my adventures, but after getting the second dose Friday, I hope that changes soon.
I find that I am still a good source of institutional memory for the past 20 to 30 years on just about any news subject. When Gov. Cuomo got in trouble recently, I couldn’t help but remember when the governor tried to fire Dave Wick. I heard from Dave, too.
Some have said they have welcomed reading me again.
Doug Beaty has been kind enough to to correct me when when ever I make a factual error. It is good to have him as a reader.
My son says he likes the “Tweet of the Day.”
Another reader said she was left in tears by the announcement the pilot read in dedicating the flight out of Denver to the police officer killed in the supermarket shooting in Boulder.
And so many of you have told me about how you also loved “My Octopus teacher” on Netflix.
Media is changing and I’m hoping that my newsletter will fill in some of the gaps in local coverage. Spread the word. We are a community. We are still all in this together.
