Morning Update

By Ken Tingley
My wife made our reservations for Lake George’s new and perhaps most popular winter attraction ever nearly a month ago.
She did not choose the best night weather-wise.
The temperature was close to zero when we parked our car a little before 10 p.m. Saturday. We all had spent a bit of time choosing our warmest clothes and layering up.
It was a still quite a shock to my bare face when we got in line for our timed entry. But there was an obvious solution. Despite being outdoors, we all quickly donned our masks to keep our faces warm. Many others were doing the same. They didn’t have to wear masks, but they were doing it to keep their faces warm.
Perhaps, if the masks were marketed as not only protection from Covid 19, but warming devices for the face more people would happily wear them.
The Ice Castles themselves are quite remarkable, but because of all the buildup and attention they have been getting I came away, not disappointed, but expecting a little more. The whole experience seemed to go too fast. It didn’t take us much longer than a 30 minutes to make our way through the attraction.
Of course, considering our ages and the temperature that night, we didn’t have much interest in the ice slides.
There are cool ice caves, lots of colored lights and the slides.
And if it is cold enough, everyone is happy to wear their masks.
A horribly good story
I chronicled my son’s nightmare journey crisis-crossing the country trying to get home in Saturday’s newsletter.
Apparently, many others can relate. Some shared their stories with me and others expressed their concern. It was my most read column since I started this newsletter almost a year ago. After some angst, Joseph’s luggage finally arrived on a doorstep sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Joseph headed out again Sunday - by car this time - as he prepares to start his new temporary job in the Boston area. We heard from him Sunday evening that he had arrived safely.
If you missed the story, you might want to check it out.
Snowmobile madness
I was driving down West Mountain Road Saturday morning and found the parking lot next to the snowmobile trails overflowing with parked vehicles and their trailers.
I have been living here some 30 years and don’t remember seeing it ever that full.
Syracuse on a roll
I’ve been watching Syracuse basketball all year so it has been nice to see the most recent three-game winning streak, including the rout of Louisville on Saturday.
Former Glens Falls standout Joe Girard III has come a long way in his development as the Syracuse point guard. The junior has put his entire game together this year. Unfortunately, with just a 12-11 record, Syracuse has an uphill battle to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Beautiful photo, and thanks for the review. Hope I can get there but it’s warming up this week.
I know I am in a real minority but when I compare Cuomo to Trump, we’ll he just doesn’t compare and he did absolutely help us thru Covid. Just saying…..
