Years ago, I remember an ice sculpture contest in City Park in Glens Falls. It was a dazzling display of sub-freezing artistry. The sculptures thrived for weeks and weeks before nature, and the sun, tools its toll.
I think the contest came back for a second year, but the weather was not as cooperative.
So with the “Ice Castles ” event scheduled to open on Sunday in Lake George, the weather is doing what it rarely does for the Winter Carnival - cooperating.
My wife and I made a visit to Lake George on Wednesday to see how the work was progressing. In many places the ice is 15 to 20 feet high and with temperatures slated to be below zero the next couple of nights, the ice should continue to grow and settle.
We weren’t the only ones curious. Several people were walking around and taking photos through the fence while work continued.
One woman told us she had been to the “Ice Castles” in Utah and found the experience amazing.
The price tag is a little high for these parts - $27 for adults on weekends, $20 during the week - but it may be worth it. Mayor Robert Blais has been telling local media this may be the best event ever in Lake George.
But of course, Mayor Blais always says that.
Ice Castles has been operating since 2011 and now has events in Utah, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and now New York. Its founder says he was looking for a way to keep his kids occupied during the winter in Utah so he built a snow cave in their yard. It took off from there.
The event promises ice caverns, ice slides, an ice maze, crawl tunnels and an Arctic alcove with lots of colorful lights.
The promotional photos are impressive and with the cold weather coming this week, it should have every opportunity to deliver in Lake George.
The even starts Sunday and will run through Monday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. six days a week. It will be closed on Tuesdays. Tickets went on sale online this week and the weekend slots are already filling up fast.
Facing our second straight pandemic winter, we all could use a distraction. This may be it.
Time to review book
So many of you have been so kind in sharing thoughts about my recent book. Now that many of you have had the chance to read it, I’d love to hear what you think in the form of an Amazon or Goodreads review. You can only review on Amazon if you have spent $50 sometime in the last year. To post a review, just search for my name or the “The Last American Editor” on Amazon, scroll to the bottom of page where it says “Write a review” and you are in business.
It doesn’t have to be long. Just a sentence will do. All reviews are appreciated.
Stefanik for president
I remember Kirsten Gillibrand telling the newspaper editorial board the same thing just a few months before announcing she was running for president.
It was a rare interview by Stefanik to a local newspaper. What seemed to be missing were any comments about the state of Covid infections around her district and what she was doing to help.
But at least we know she is NOT running for president.
I believe in Elise just as much as I do in the tooth fairy.
Not well publicized is that there is a “locals” day for Warren County residents on February 2 from 2-8 @ $5/person.
