In Tuesday’s newsletter, I related the story of a young Post-Star sportswriter who contributed an essay about his high school when there was a shooting at his high school in 1999. That high school was Columbine.
I reached out to Patrick Ridgell this week to him to let him know I was thinking of him and his family. I heard from him the next day.
“I am well and living in a Denver suburb not too far from Boulder,” Patrick wrote. “I remember that day of the Columbine shooting well, too. Very sad. I like living in Colorado and believe it is a good place to raise my two kids, but the fact these shootings keep happening here, or anywhere for that matter, is disturbing, obviously, but also surreal. I don't know if it's just getting older or what, but I realized today as I was working and doing the daily routine stuff that I was kind of numb to what happened yesterday, and that sucks.”
Unfortunately, Patrick is not the only one numb to the shootings.
Sadly, I think most of us are and I have long ago resigned myself that there is no will among the people to do anything.
Vaccine, Part II
According to the New York Times statistics through Thursday, 27.6 percent of New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose while another 13.7 percent have received both doses.
I am happy to report that my wife and I are now among the 13.7 percent after getting our second dose in Plattsburgh on Friday.
We were almost giddy with excitement for the trip to get the first dose, but by Friday the excitement for the second dose had passed.
The second dose took about a half-hour longer to get than the first dose, but we didn’t have a lot else to do on a rainy Friday afternoon.
Late game Saturday
Make sure to rest up if you plan on watching the Syracuse game Saturday night. Tip-off is not until 9:55 p.m. against second-seeded Houston.
Girard and the crowd
During a question and answer with former Syracuse star Eric Devendorf (2005-09) with syracuse.com said this about Glens Falls’ Joe Giarard III:
“The crowd has an effect, not only for Joe but for all the players, but I think Joe is one of those guys that feeds off that. He hit a shot from the logo (vs. West Virginia) and the crowd went crazy. It felt like it was 20,000 people in the Dome. I think he likes that. He likes the pressure. He likes the challenge. It’s tournament time. We talked about the crowd, he’s feeding off that. And we need him. We need him going forward.’'
