By Ken Tingley
Let me add my condolences to the family of Bill Wetherbee, who passed away this past week at the age of 88.
Bill was one of those behind-the-scenes guys at the New York State Basketball Tournament in Glens Falls. When I was sports editor at The Post-Star, Bill was the guy we went to for information about the teams coming to play in Glens Falls each March.
He was in charge of putting together the tournament program each year. He often dug out old photographs for us to use in as part of our tourney preview. He was always helpful.
Later on, it was Bill’s voice that became synonymous with the big games at the state tourney. Apparently, Glens Falls High requested he do the game when they were in the tournament a couple years ago. I had not heard that before.
But more than anything, Bill was a nice guy. He was a community guy who got things done that needed doing.
When I started playing noon ball over at the YMCA 30 years ago, I would regularly run into Bill from time to time. Bill was 20 years my senior, but he could still hold his own with us younger guys. His height and long arms made him a force to be contended with under the basket and it was clear he knew how to play the game. He had a pretty good shot, too. But I never knew he played college ball at Hamilton.
He played less and less over the years, but when he did take part, he continued to hold his own.
I’m still playing noon ball over at the YMCA. On Wednesday, I surprised the 20-year-old newcomer who was guarding me by hitting a couple of long jumpers. He told me he hoped to be as good as me when he was my age. That made me think of Bill. I’m hoping I am half the player Bill was, but more importantly, as good a person as Bill Wetherbee was. He set the bar high for all of us.
He will be missed.
Resignation
Rep. Elise Stefanik has tweeted so much about Gov. Cuomo being the worst governor in New York’s history in recent weeks, I wonder what she will do with her time with Cuomo gone. I assume she has a day job.
Baseball problem
I rarely watch an entire Major League Baseball game anymore. I usually pick it up around the seventh inning.
When I tuned in the other night, the Yankees were tied with the Royals, 0-0. Over the next four innings, the Yankees took four leads and blew four leads. I was astounded to learn no team had done this going back to 1900.
The Yankees eventually prevailed 8-6, but the game ended at 1:03 a.m. and took nearly four hours to play.
That’s why baseball has a problem.
Book update
After some delays, my first book “The Last American Editor” has been sent to the printer and all those who preordered should get the book within a couple of weeks. I hope. My publisher is taking preorders through the end of the week so there is still time to order.
I wonder what she will do with her time with Cuomo gone. I assume she has a day job.
Urging her supporters to get vaccinated so NY can reach herd immunity. 😃
I can dream anyway. She’s fighting with both the PS and WDT today. The Press Republican and Sun must be feeling neglected.
I remember Mr. Wetherbee as principal at South High. He was such a gentle, kind man. They just don't make them like that anymore! This world would be a much better place if we had more Bill Wetherbees. R.I.P Mr. Wetherbee, heaven has acquired another angel.
