Most of Rep. Elise Stefanik’s constituents probably don’t know that she is a prolific user of Twitter.
Honestly, I don’t know where she gets the time.
The young congresswoman has always been a proponent of using social media to get out her message instead of having towns hall meetings where real people get to ask her real questions about the real problems in their lives.
As someone who follows the congresswoman on Twitter I can tell you that she rarely tweets about those problems or people. Her messages are far more political than helpful or insightful.
Pew reports that about one in four people actually use Twitter. Here in the North Country, I believe it is far less than that. With a conservative, older population that often has nothing more than rudimentary WiFi, I doubt many are giving social media too much thought.
About half the people who do use Twitter believe it has increased their understanding of current events and one in three believe it makes them more politically engaged.
But Pew also found something we all should be concerned about. More than half of the people said “inaccurate or misleading information is a major problem” on Twitter. Sadly, our congresswoman is often a contributor to that.
Here is the final important tidbit. The most active 25 percent of Twitter users - people like Rep. Stefanik - produce 97 percent of the content.
So if you are really into Twitter - like Rep. Stefanik - you tend to have a lot to say. It would be nice if it was accurate and civil, too.
College football
Ever since my son attended graduate school at West Virginia University, I have taken a much greater interest in college football.
I’ve been watching most of the West Virginia games the past three years and went to three in Morgantown. When my son moved to Texas last year, I started following Texas and Texas-San Antonio (UTSA).
I picked a good year. UTSA is unbeaten at 11-0 and ranked 15th in the latest Associated Press Poll. On Saturday, I saw my first UTSA game in person at the cavernous Alamodome. It turned out to be one of the most exciting football games I have ever seen with UTSA catching a tipped pass in the back of the end zone to win the game with 3 seconds left.
After the game, they let all the fans go out on the field and mingle with the players. It was a day to remember.
On Friday, we’re going to see the Texas Longhorns play Kansas State in a 100,000 seat stadium. I can’t wait.
Book sales
“The Last American Editor” has had a flurry of sales recently and I had to restock both the McKernon Gallery in Hudson Falls and Ace Hardware in Queensbury. Battenkill Books is also down to its last copy and Northshire Books has just four left.
Just heard from my first book club that has chosen to read my book as part of its monthly selection. When they are done in January, I will be visiting to see how they liked it.
So if you are part of a book club, keep “The Last American Editor” in mind.
Cases on the rise
The number of Covid-19 cases in Washington County continue to grow. The same in Warren County. Eric County is going into lockdown and two schools in South Glens Falls are going back to remote learning. It is time to mask up.
She also spends a lot of time on right wing talk shows from what I've been hearing. Her focus now is on herself. She has nothing to contribute to this state anymore, and she proves it more and more. She is officially useless!
Twitter is the perfect place to spread her lies! Or take credit for things she voted against. Stefanik does NOTHING to support the residents she is suppose to represent. She shows up for photo ops, never legitimate town halls!
